Marblehead Harbor

Racing in Front of the Boston Yacht Club

With sailboats crisscrossing Marblehead Harbor and flying colorful sails, is it any wonder that I have many photos to share from a late April afternoon shooting the Jackson Cup? As the sailboats moved in their lanes back and forth in front of the Boston Yacht Club, I tried to time the shutter and composition to include boats at various positions in the frame while including as much of the BYC's nameplate as possible. This frame accomplished that task and seems to capture the beauty of racing inside our harbor.

Clouds in the Sky and Boats in the Water

In September 2013, I had spotted an impressive cloud forming overhead and raced out to the causeway from where I was able to capture the cumulonimbus cloud over a Marblehead harbor packed full with boats. It had been my goal to capture images of Marblehead outside of the golden hours of sunrise and sunset and I was pretty happy with how this image came out. I decided to get ahead of the cloud by driving up to Chandler Hovey Park and, as I arrived, the sky had taken a turn for the worse. I looked up at the darkening sky [...]

Valkyrie and the Jackson Cup

On the last weekend in April, I headed across to the Neck and captured these one design boats vying for the Jackson Cup. The sailboats crossed in front of familiar landmarks such as St. Michael's steeple and the Grace Community Church while competing inside of Marblehead Harbor. The harbor has started to fill with boats just in the past week. Can't wait to start shooting sunrises and sunsets over moorings finally filled with boats for the season.

First Turn for the Jackson Cup

On the last weekend in April, I headed across to the Neck and captured these one design boats vying for the Jackson Cup. The sailboats crossed in front of familiar landmarks such as Abbot Hall while competing inside of Marblehead Harbor. This shot seemed to capture three boats vying for position at the first turn - though to be honest, I couldn't follow the race well enough to judge where it began or ended...

The Harbor at Noon

Wednesday began with thick fog over town and I wrote off the day as unlikely to offer many photo opportunities between the dreary weather and lack of foliage around town. As the day progressed, the sun burned through the fog and clouds began to appear in the western sky. I had a few errands to run so I threw the camera bag in the trunk and drove off to the Neck. I circled the Neck not finding the image I wanted at Chandler Hovey Park and made it back down to Harbor Avenue just off the causeway where I spotted [...]

Marblehead High School Sailing on a Spring Day

On Sunday, I had to drop off my son at a friend's house on the Neck. At the last minute, I grabbed my camera with the longest lens I had in the hopes that frostbite sailing might have returned to Marblehead Harbor.  With seemingly endless Nor'Easters and otherwise bad conditions, I hadn't had a chance to photograph the sailboats inside the harbor racing in front of familiar locations. As luck would have it, I found a fleet race was taking place and the conditions were picture perfect with bright sun overhead, partly cloudy skies behind Abbot Hall and an otherwise [...]

Frozen Harbor at Sunset

The night before a blizzard quite literally exploded over Marblehead, I went out hoping to capture the sight of a nearly frozen harbor.  While Salem harbor had frozen over several days ago, Marblehead's own harbor seemed more stubborn in succumbing to the arctic blast. Earlier on this Wednesday, I had made it out to Riverhead Beach and flew my drone over the newly frozen parts of inner harbor and knew that at least part of our harbor had finally frozen. As sunset approached, I headed across the causeway trying to think of a new vantage point having shot from just [...]

Beacon in the Smoke

With temperatures stuck below freezing and another sunrise at single digits, I couldn't pass up the chance to try out my new camera and lens.  I had just received the Sony 100-400mm lens in the mail the night before and had been hoping for continued cold to shoot more scenes of sea smoke in Marblehead Harbor. When I woke and looked out at the cloud cover, I knew the conditions were right for an amazing dawn but also had to get ready for work.  I watched the light explode this morning while getting ready but was able to finish in [...]

Harbormaster in the Smoke

One more new photo before the end of the year... I couldn't help but head out this morning to capture the harbor in arctic conditions.  As I drove toward State Street, I watched the thermometer on my dashboard until it settled at 1F (not counting any wind chill).  I parked at the Landing and headed out to find sea smoke throughout the harbor.  It wasn't at the incredible levels I had last seen in February 2016 but any sea smoke is worth the drive and braving the elements. I shot toward the lighthouse before spotting the sun rising directly over [...]

One Last Sail in October

This was the last photo I captured on Sunday when I headed out in search of foliage.  As the day came to an end, I found myself on Chandler Hovey Park set up for a promising sunset.  As I aimed my camera at Abbot Hall, I spotted a lone sailboat heading out for one last sail on this late October evening.  I adjusted my composition as the boat inched closer and fired off this shot as the sailboat floated into the perfect location. The scattered boats on their moorings are a vivid contrast from the peak of Summer but with [...]
