Marblehead Harbor

Setting Sail

I don't recall the last time I captured an image intending to convert it to black and white. As I captured boats racing on Sunday inside Marblehead Harbor, I had to wait for the sun to poke through clouds. It illuminated both boats and the backdrop most of the time but, during one stretch, the light seemed focused on the boats while Abbot Hall was left in relative darkness under ominous clouds. With light playing center stage in this image, I did not want the colorful sails to distract the viewers eye and so I converted the color image to [...]

Neck and Neck during the Halloween Race

The annual Eastern Yacht Club Halloween Race took place in Marblehead Harbor today and the clouds broke apart just long enough for me to come home with several keepers. The normally two-day event was cut to one by yesterdays Nor'Easter and so sailing took place longer than usual on this last Sunday in October. I had just dropped off my daughter and headed across the Neck where I set up in front of the Eastern Yacht Club for this prime viewing location. I had to wait for the intermittent bursts of light but was thrilled to capture not only the [...]

Mid-Harbor Glow

On Friday night, I returned home from work to find some promising clouds over the harbor and headed out before dinner to see about capturing some nice light. I drove to the lighthouse and then came back down to this spot just past the causeway on Marblehead Neck from which I had a few compositions to choose from. I spent most of my time shooting with Abbot Hall in the frame but, as the sun dipped lower, I spotted the reflecting light of one boat's windows and adjusted to this mid-harbor view to capture that pop of light on an [...]

J70 and the Start of the Sunset

I shared an image of the peak of sunset light from Peabody Lane last night and promised many more images from this outing on Sunday night. As the sun began to descend in the sky and the clouds broke just right, twin spots of golden light appeared low in the evening sky. I set up this composition and then spotted a J70 gliding through the harbor. I waited until it came into a nice spot and captured this image. If you weren't aware, the J70 World Championship begins today in the waters off Marblehead. Racing continues all week long.

Reflections of a Full Harbor

On Monday, I shared an image of pre-sunset light bathing Marblehead Harbor in a soft gold. I had captured the shot from the Dolphin Yacht Club just as our dinner was brought out to the balcony. Upon seeing that light (and with two plates not yet out), I excused myself and headed down to the water for a few more quick shots. As it turned out, the light quickly disappeared as the sun hid behind cloud cover but the still water of the harbor created some really nice reflections. I shot a tight crop and a wide angle view of [...]

Blue Sky over Marblehead Harbor

On a hot Labor Day, I parked at Riverhead Beach and walked the length of the causeway trying to find the perfect spot to capture the deep blue sky over Marblehead Harbor.  At around the mid-point, I found that I could line up Abbot Hall on the left, the edge of Marblehead Light on the right and seemingly endless masts of boats filling the space in between. With a big blue sky punctuated by white clouds overhead, I had the makings of a picture perfect summer day in Marblehead.

Stacked up for Sunset

On a mid-June evening, I headed to Harvard Street while chasing this sunset over Marblehead Harbor. I arrived in time to set up and decide on this composition that encompassed Abbot Hall to Grace Community Church with boats stacked up for sunset under the pink sky with golden light on the water. The focal length compressed and accentuated the feel of boats packed tightly in the harbor and captured the feel of a mid-summer evening in Marblehead.

Diving for Rainbows

I mentioned yesterday that I have not shot many (if any) storms this summer and ended up revisiting images taken back in August of 2015 to find an unshared shot of lightning. While in that folder, I found this image of a rainbow forming over Marblehead Harbor. I couldn't remember the specifics of this outing on August 4th, 2015 so I jumped into the folder where I keep my images and discovered I had taken 20 images between 3pm and 8:20pm on this day ranging from dark clouds over Marblehead Light to lightning near Abbot to rainbows over the harbor [...]

Taking the Launch from the Eastern Yacht Club

On June 30th, I had gone out to shoot both the sunrise and sunset. For the latter, I had decided on the pier at the Pleon Yacht Club and kept looking in front of me (towards Abbot Hall) and behind me (at the Eastern Yacht Club) as the sun dipped lower in the sky. At this point, the sun was casting a perfect golden glow over the EYC and I captured this frame just as a small group was taking the launch out to their boat moored in the harbor.

Rain Cloud at Sunset

The thunderstorms that passed through on Sunday night put me in mind of late July evening in 2015 when my family and I returned from dinner to find that a storm had just passed through town. We drove across Lafayette just before sunset and I spotted this incredible cloud formation in the distance. I convinced my family to join me and considered myself lucky for having the forethought to put my camera gear in the trunk. We ended up chasing the light to Front Street where I jumped out to capture the rain cloud at sunset appearing to drench Marblehead [...]
