Marblehead Harbor

Filling in the Harbor

On Friday, May 22nd, I chased the clouds over to Crocker Park at sunset hoping to capture one of those early Summer sunsets that had begun to develop over Marblehead.  The best conditions were opposite the setting sun and I needed a break in the clouds behind me to allow sunlight to wash Marblehead Neck in a golden glow.  I got just that at 7:41pm and captured this image showing Marblehead harbor filling up with boats and some nicely textured clouds showing the first of many Summer sunsets.

Race Around the Swim Marker in Marblehead Harbor

On a warm Summer night, I visited Crocker Park in hopes of capturing a beautiful sunset over Marblehead Harbor.  The sunset never did materialize but, just before 7:00pm, I heard a splash and spotted two kids racing toward the swim marker.  I managed to capture them as they made their way around the marker and back toward the float. It won't be much longer before kids of all ages are jumping into Marblehead Harbor.

Lined Up and Ready to Sail

After this perfect weekend, I thought it fitting to look ahead to warmer days and a full Marblehead harbor. This image was taken on September 9 during an unusually low tide that allowed me to wade deep into the harbor.  I was able to capture a few unique compositions from this vantage point including this one of boats lined up and ready to sail.

Ready for Summer in Marblehead

I'm ready for Summer in Marblehead - are you? I thought Winter had loosened its grip on us but last week brought a bit more snow and a lot more cold (bitterly so at times).  With that in mind, I dove into my 'To Be Posted' archive and found this picture perfect depiction of a late Summer day in Marblehead.  The image of boats filling Marblehead Harbor comes from high tide atop the causeway.  Though the photo breaks one of the rules of photography (never put a horizon line in the center), there was too much in the foreground (rocks [...]

Frostbite Sailing in Marblehead Harbor

This image of frostbite sailing in Marblehead Harbor comes from a pleasantly warm Sunday on March 3, 2013.  The temperature had hit the lower 40s and I was out exploring Crocker Park when I spotted this group of sonars going through maneuvers within Marblehead Harbor. Frostbite sailing is such a unique tradition for Marblehead and I highly recommend experiencing it in person from Crocker Park or Marblehead Neck.  Sailing takes place on Sundays typically starting on November 11th and continues until the end of April.

A Spring Thaw on Marblehead Harbor

On Sunday, March 8, I awoke at 6:30am completely confused about whether I had gotten too little or too much sleep as we entered Daylight Savings Time.  Whichever the case might have been (it was too little by the way), I decided to take advantage and rush out of the house to capture the dawn and sunrise. The last time I had captured images of Marblehead Harbor was the morning on February 18th when I found the harbor had frozen for the first time in years.  With that in mind, I headed to one of my favorite spots for a [...]

Sea Smoke and Abbot Hall

One week after yesterday's image of a frozen Redd's Pond, the temperatures dipped to previously unseen lows and I headed out at dawn in hopes of capturing sea smoke.  Since first witnessing the phenomenon of smoke rising from the ocean, I have ventured out at every opportunity to capture the incredible sight.  However, until this day, I had never witnessed sea smoke within Marblehead Harbor. I previously shared a wider view of the sea smoke in Marblehead Harbor with the pink-purple sky of dawn over Marblehead's skyline.  This image was taken a few moments later when the sun had risen [...]

On Frozen Harbor

On Wednesday, February 18, I headed down to Marblehead Harbor to capture images of it frozen over after a near-record 15 days of below freezing temperatures.  What struck me most were the intricate textures and designs that had formed in the ice. I've shared some images from this outing but, in this one, I decided to use a vertical composition and processed it in black and white to help highlight the textures and patterns in the frozen harbor.

Frozen Marblehead Harbor at Sunrise

Today is my 40th birthday.  In the past, I have made it a point to capture the sunrise on my birthday each year and I have ended up with some favorite images to start each new year of life.  This year with forecasts for cloudy skies on Wednesday morning and overcast conditions for today, I opted to shoot the sunrise a day early. I started off intending to shoot from Hammond Park but it was closed off by a literal mountain of snow.  I was able to get close to the waters edge and found an incredible scene of a [...]
