Empty Harbor 4 – The Corinthian and Marblehead Light

From my spot along Foster Street, I captured scenes of the empty harbor before me but also turned back toward the Corinthian Yacht Club and found this view of interest. With the seemingly endless expanse of space to the left of the CYC, it appears as thought the empty moorings go on forever. The addition of Marblehead Light positioned behind the Corinthian and the light reflecting off the nearest mooring added to the final image.

Empty Harbor 3 – Panorama

On Sunday, I headed out to capture scenes of Marblehead's empty harbor but, with my longest lens on, found I couldn't quite fit the entirety of the scene before me in one shot. I quickly decided to flip the camera and capture this 12-shot panorama that takes in the full length from Abbot Hall and the BYC to the State Street Landing. Without a single boat in the water, the numerous moorings created a nice visual to break up the water and I lucked out with the soft clouds overhead.

Empty Harbor 2 – First One In

Alright, so I guess Marblehead harbor isn't completely empty as I found this boat on a mooring in front of the Boston Yacht Club. It appears that, apart from the working boats, this may be the 'first one in' to harbor. Won't be long before this boat is joined by many others to take their spot on the moorings.  I wasn't able to spot the boat's name - if you know it, please add it in a comment below.

Empty Harbor 1 – Abbot and the BYC

Sunday began with warmer than expected temperatures and a picture perfect sky prompting me to head out before my son's lacrosse game to capture some scenes of an empty harbor.  I stood along Foster Street and captured several views of Marblehead harbor with moorings eagerly awaiting the arrival of boats of all shapes and sizes. When I finished going through my images, I realized I had five 'keepers' and decided to create this Empty Harbor series. Seemed like a good way to get everyone excited for warmer days.

Frostbite Sailing past Old North Church

Spring is here!  If all goes according to plan, I will be capturing the full moon setting on the spring equinox near Old North Church just as this post goes live in the morning. We are in peak frostbite sailing season but I haven't had a chance to make it out to capture the boats crossing in front of familiar landmarks this year. Between the morning plans and the lack of any recent frostbite sailing images, I thought this would make for a nice image to start the day.

Smoke in the Harbor – Eastern Yacht Club

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out on an arctic morning near the end of December 2017 to capture sea smoke and was surprised to find it rising off the waters inside Marblehead Harbor. Usually the phenomenon is better seen in the open water near Chandler Hovey aided by backlighting of the morning sun. Here is the view of the Eastern Yacht Club from my spot along Front Street.

Smoke in the Harbor – Corinthian Yacht Club

One year ago on a truly arctic morning at the end of December, I made my way to Front Street and captured sea smoke inside Marblehead Harbor. Since moving to Marblehead in 2008, I've been fascinated by the phenomenon of sea smoke - literal steam coming off the ocean when an arctic air mass lies above the water.  The smoke has appeared as early as late December or as late as mid-February. On this particular morning, the combination of very cold air and relatively warm water allowed smoke to appear inside Marblehead Harbor. I had only seen this once before [...]

Golden Light on an Emptying Harbor

I mentioned a few days ago that I had gone out to Crocker Park on Friday night hoping for a nice sunset and some foliage. I ended up getting lucky with the former but with most of the good light positioned behind Abbot Hall. Before capturing that image, I pointed my lens toward the golden light on Marblehead Neck and the sad view of an emptying harbor. There was a patch of leaf color in one tree at Crocker Park with two others having already emptied of leaves.

Watching the Boats Pass

While I was capturing scenes of the annual Halloween Race in Marblehead harbor, I spotted a couple of spectators one pier over at the Pleon watching as well. I recomposed the shot I had been taking with boats crossing in front of Abbot Hall to include these two guys watching the boats pass. As luck would have it, the sun came out just as a trio of boats came into the frame and I captured this multilayered image.
