Coastline in the Fog – Wave Foam on the Neck

On Saturday, February 25th, I woke to find Marblehead enveloped in fog as a result of the Spring-like weather that had offered us several days of warmth.  I ended up chasing the light and fog from Little Harbor to the Neck and came away with enough favorites to share a new foggy image of Marblehead every day this week. Today's image is my second favorite and comes from the outcropping at Castle Rock.  I had just taken what would be my favorite image of the day and walked behind the large rock to explore the view of this section of [...]

Framed by the Pier House

This weekend, frostbite sailing took place in Marblehead harbor under Spring-like conditions and I couldn't pass up the chance to capture images of the sailboats maneuvering inside of the harbor.  In between closeups of the boats against familiar backdrops and shots taken by drone, I spotted sailboats passing through the open door of the Eastern Yacht Club pier house. I quickly recomposed my shot to include the whole of the EYC pier house just as a sailboat passed through the door opening.  The sun poked out from behind the clouds for a brief moment to add a warm glow to [...]

Foggy Days at Castle Rock

Since the forecast for today and tomorrow is a mix of rain and fog, I thought I would dive into the archive and share this image of foggy days at Castle Rock taken in May 2012.  Every time I share an image of Castle Rock, I'm reminded of the incredible beauty of this small part of Marblehead Neck.  You could spend hours watching and listening to the surf as it comes to shore and tumbles the rocks creating a perfect symphony of sights and sounds any time of year.

Watching the Storm at Castle Rock

With every storm, I try to make it out to Castle Rock near high tide to watch the incredible power of Mother Nature as waves crash into the shoreline and explode in plumes of white.  With a perfect vantage point on the rock and views North and South, there really is no better place in all of Massachusetts for watching a storm roll in than Castle Rock in Marblehead. Here are three images captured at high tide as Hermine churned offshore. If you haven't seen the video yet, you can experience the storm by clicking below.   [...]

Capture the Fog

Yesterday's image of two Townies under the red light of a foggy sunset was one of the last images I captured on Tuesday night as fog rolled into Marblehead harbor.  This was one of the first. I had left my house as soon as I saw fog rolling in as I knew the timing offered a chance for spectacular light conditions around the harbor.  I drove across the causeway in thickening fog and parked as soon as I could on Marblehead Neck only to double back and set up for this shot. With flags hanging from the lamp posts and [...]

Last Light at Castle Rock

In early June 2013, I had gone out near sunset and quite literally chased this small cloud from the house across the causeway and onto Marblehead Neck.  I had recently delivered a print to a house overlooking Castle Rock and made a quick call on my way to see if I could shoot from a spot I had eyed the day before. As luck would have it, the cloud floated into a perfect spot and both it and the outcropping known as Castle Rock began to reflect the last light of sunset just as I set up my tripod.  I [...]

Leading Lines on the Causeway

Our final image of the week and a good lead off for the weekend is this one from the morning of May 6, 2012.  I had gone out on this morning to shoot the Marblehead Carnival in the early light and had hoped to capture the full moon setting as well.  The latter didn't work out with the cloud cover but I was able to capture some nice images of Devereux Beach in the blue hour. As the morning light broke through the clouds, I made my way up to the causeway and stopped here when I saw that the lamp [...]

A Night at the Corinthian Yacht Club

My wife and I are headed out to opening night at the Dolphin Yacht Club this evening which led me to hunt through the archive for images of the yacht clubs in Marblehead to feature this morning.  Unfortunately, I don't have any of the Dolphin's facade yet (hoping to remedy that soon enough) but I did find this image of the Corinthian Yacht Club taken at the end of July 2015. I had gone out on this night to shoot the blue moon and found myself in position a bit early.  With that opportunity, I sought out compositions across the [...]

Pastel Clouds over Marblehead Neck

Today's image comes from February 21 and a relatively warm Winter day at Fort Sewall.  I had gone out with the aim of shooting the moon but a solid sunset developed which grabbed my attention well before the moon rose. As the sun set, it spread soft light that reflected off these pastel clouds over Marblehead Neck.  I love this spot at Fort Sewall as I am able to capture the whole of the Neck in one frame (using my wide angle lens) and showcase its island-like appearance. I chose to include the rocky shore and white surf to break up [...]

Summer Days at Castle Rock

With the gray, raw day that just passed, I was looking for a bright Summer view of Marblehead and found this image from mid-September.  I had received an ultra-wide angle on loan from Canon and was busy putting it through its paces when I decided to try a few compositions at Castle Rock. The lens was proving to be quite challenging in that every part of the frame needed to be used to produce a solid final image.  For this shot, I set up the camera on a tripod very close to the ocean's edge and waited for the moment [...]
