Marblehead – A Model New England Town

In late November 2014, as Abbot Hall tower was nearing the end of its much needed repairs, I was invited atop the scaffolding to help document the work that was taking place. With a perfect vantage point from which to capture images of historic downtown and the harbor, I couldn't help but shoot the nearly endless compositions that presented themselves. The Cupola of Grace Community Church

I was fortunate to welcome 2016 from atop St. Michael's new steeple and come away with several images from this unique location. I've shared a few looking out towards the harbor and looking down Hooper Street. As dawn's light broke free of the thick clouds near the horizon, the cupola of Grace Community Church was illuminated briefly. I quickly switched to a vertical orientation and captured this close up view of the cupola with soft light in the distance.

From the Rooftops – Pleasant Street at Dawn

Can you tell that I enjoyed my time atop St. Michael's steeple? This is another image from New Years day and came as the light picked up a bit in the morning sky. I composed the image of Pleasant street at dawn to showcase Grace Community Church as well as the stores in historic downtown Marblehead. The addition of lights in some of the store windows add a warm glow to the final scene.

Abbot Hall in Dawn’s Glowing Light

More images from New Years day to start off this week. This was the first thing I saw when I climbed out onto the base of St. Michael's steeple to welcome 2016. Dawn's glowing light was illuminating clouds to the West and I quickly set up for an image including Abbot hall from this unique vantage point.

A Cold Start to a New Year

I mentioned in last week's post that I started off the new year with a shoot from atop St. Michaels new steeple. One of the first images I took was of the lit star seeming to hang over Marblehead Neck. However, while I was up there, I couldn't resist recreating my Hooper to the Harbor shot that won Peoples Choice award in this year's festival. A Shining Star on New Years Day – First Sunrise of 2016

A photographer friend of mine recently commented that New Years doesn't begin at midnight for us...it starts with the first sunrise. Along the Avenue

In April 2012, I was fortunate to be taken up in a Cessna for a flight over Marblehead. I've written about this flight on a number of past posts and have shared various images from the short but productive trip. As I looked through the 'to be posted' folder for images to share this week, I found this one taken as we passed over Atlantic Avenue. Flying over Marblehead Neck and the Causeway

Almost exactly three years ago, I ventured up in a Cessna with a friend to capture scenes of Marblehead from the ultimate 'rooftop'. Crocker Park and Marblehead Neck from atop Abbot Hall

There's something about seeing the Town of Marblehead from above that quite literally changes your perspective of areas you've visited countless times. This image comes from my journey up the scaffolding surrounding Abbot Hall tower in early December. I've shared a number of images from this unique position so far which serve to highlight the layout of the town and its iconic buildings. Here you can see Crocker Park encircled by houses and a mere stone's throw from Marblehead Neck and the lighthouse across the harbor.

From Atop Marblehead Light

On July 2, 2014, I was fortunate to be invited to the top of Marblehead Light. The climb was more difficult than I imagined with a sharply winding staircase within the small diameter of the lighthouse's central column.
