300 Years Later – A New Steeple for St. Michael’s Church

On Thursday, August 28, a crowd gathered in the historic downtown section of Marblehead to watch as a new steeple was placed atop St. Michael's Church. The Episcopal church was founded in 1714 and originally had a wooden steeple above the building but decay led to its removal in 1793. From the Lighthouse – Boats Passing in the Ocean

Back to the top of Marblehead Light for this From the Rooftops Thursday view. I shared a few images overlooking Marblehead Harbor from this unique vantage point but had also tried to find other compositions while standing at the highest point in Marblehead. This view of the tip of Chandler Hovey Park seemed to be missing something with the large expanse of ocean but then two boats passed before me and I captured the scene with a much-needed element.

Through the Looking Glass at Marblehead Light

I skipped last week's From the Rooftops Thursday entry in favor of a dramatic sunset so today we return to the top of Marblehead Light for one of a series of images capture on July 2nd as we climbed to the top of the lighthouse to hang lights for the Fourth of July celebration. Back to the top of Marblehead Light from July 2nd for this From the Rooftops Thursday image. I had previously shared an image including the shadows cast by Marblehead Light but, before focusing on that composition, I had been overwhelmed by the expansive view of Marblehead Harbor. The only tricky part was deciding whether to incorporate Abbot Hall with its scaffolding and red drape. Casting Shadows at Marblehead Light

For this image, I decided to move the camera as close to the window as possible and compose an image of Bank Square seen below and Marblehead Harbor beyond with the sun's light diffused by a large cloud. It's back to the Jeremiah Lee Mansion for today's From the Rooftops entry. I had finished capturing images from the cupola atop the mansion and descended the stairs when I looked behind me and saw light peeking through a window. The area I entered was a bit bigger than a crawl space and served as the attic for the old building. Abbot Hall from Atop the Jeremiah Lee Mansion

Back to From the Rooftops Thursday and my trip to the cupola of the Jeremiah Lee Mansion. Though the area is small, the 360 degree view through beautiful windows made for a number of photo opportunities. This image comes from a shot through the middle of one window facing back up Washington Street. I had to use a technique called focus stacking to combine two images focused on the wood panel and then Abbot Hall in the distance in order to have both perfectly focused in the final image. Abbot Hall from the Cupola of the Jeremiah Lee Mansion

Another entry in the resurrected From the Rooftops Thursday comes from my photo shoot on the morning of April 9. After capturing the view of Washington Street, Marblehead Harbor and Marblehead Light through the three panes looking to the east, I crossed the small cupola and composed this image. I was thankful that the scaffolding had not yet gone up on Abbot Hall tower and that I could capture this view of the homes along Washington Street leading up toward that iconic structure.
