Rainbow after the Storm

Not even 10 minutes after capturing the bolt of lightning from Fort Beach, the sun broke through the clouds and lit up water vapor to create a beautiful rainbow after the storm. I went with a wider composition to keep the trees at Fort Sewall and the boats at Fort Beach in the frame while managing to catch a nice reflection of the rainbow in the water. The dramatic sky was a nice bonus as was that deep blue sky near Marblehead Light. Make sure you check in Sunday morning for "Nature's Fireworks" that I captured one hour later when [...]

Lightning Crashes

I love summer storms...especially when they happen on a Wednesday in Marblehead ;-) With the insane heat wave of the past few days predicted to break tonight, I kept watching multiple weather apps and my radar ones looking for any sign of storms and the possibility of lightning. Sure enough right around 6pm, a set of storms that had been heading to our north abruptly shifted and came over Marblehead. The radar looked too ominous to try to capture the incoming storm so I waited it out (while enjoying sushi from Gourmet Garden) and then took off as soon as [...]

The Show is About the Begin

Rather than share one or two shots from Tuesday night's fun outing and then save the rest in the 'to be published' folder, I thought it would be fun to take you through the hour spent at Crocker Park as the light developed. I cheated by showing one of my favorites from 8:07pm right off the bat but let's take a step back. I arrived at Crocker Park at 7:20pm and captured this shot at 7:27. I had chosen Crocker because the light seemed most promising to the north where a storm was crossing over Gloucester but another had just [...]

First Rainbow of the Season

There's nothing quite like catching that first rainbow of the season ;-) I had already gone out once today but had come back without any photos to show for the quick drive. So I was laying on the couch after a nice meal from Howling Wolf and watching TV when I hear what sounded like rain. It took me a few seconds to realize the sound was coming from outside rather than the show and, as soon as my brain made that connection, little alarms went off in my head. Anytime I spot a shower within an hour of sunset, [...]

Under the Gathering Clouds

Last night's storm brought to mind this outing in mid-August when gathering clouds made the sky nearly as interesting as the harbor. I had arrived at Riverhead Beach just as a storm approached and shot a few frames before heading out for other locations and lucked out with a great sunset and rainbow at Castle Rock. Here I decided to include more of the sky than the harbor but love that I could fit both Abbot Hall and Marblehead Light in the composition.

Please Stay Off Beach

I couldn't help but combine three shots from this spot along Ocean Avenue on the Neck to create a more impressive view of the lightning strikes over Boston from a very active storm that came through on August 23rd. This was the same storm that I captured in that purplish orange sunset with a single bolt. Having gotten that shot, I headed for home but then decided to turn onto Ocean Avenue as lightning kept striking to the south. I used my widest lens and shot several frames until I managed to capture this collection of bolts over the span [...]

Passing Storm

Hope you aren't tired of images from Wednesday August 19 yet but, as the difference from yesterday's afterglow to today's dramatic sky illustrate, there was such a wide spectrum of light conditions that every location offered completely different clouds and lighting to play with. This shot of the passing storm crossing over the causeway and the Neck was captured earlier in the evening at my first stop - Riverhead Beach. When I am dealing with uncertain conditions, I tend to head to this spot to quickly check the sky and light from every direction. As it turned out, I had [...]

Lightning Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

That was quite the lightning storm that passed over Marblehead tonight and I feel very fortunate to have lucked out with capturing this one bolt from along Corinthian Lane. Earlier in the evening, I watched as the storm approached but did not dare venture out based on the radar signature of deep reds and purples. I held hope that after the main storm passed, I still might have a chance to capture some of the action and, given the hour, maybe, just maybe a lightning sunset. As I left the house, I spotted a huge rainbow overhead but by the [...]

Fractured Clouds over Tinkers

On Wednesday night, I headed to Riverhead Beach as a storm approached Marblehead. I started off shooting the harbor at low tide but kept looking over my shoulder at dark storm clouds over Tinkers Island and the interesting tendrils underneath. I did some research after returning home and discovered these are called stratus fractus for their fractured appearance. The contrast between the dark clouds and dark ocean separated by the waning light of day behind Tinkers Island impressed me while standing on the causeway and was fun to process when I returned home.

By Request – Weathering the Storm

I received another request the other day for a 'storm' shot and thought this would be a good one to end the week with. Just as the Barnacle has borne the brunt of countless storms, so will the town of Marblehead weather this storm of health, social and economic impacts while sheltering in place and trying to keep the community safe. I read today that Marblehead Board of Health has joined other towns in enacting a mask law beginning today that, according to the Reporter: "requires residents to wear a face mask if they are entering any business including grocery [...]
