Fishing in the Storm

This is an image that I have wanted to share on countless occasions but always managed to find some other image to take its place. In November 2009, I was exploring Fort Sewall when I spotted this small boat in the mouth of Marblehead Harbor. The seas were rough and some good sized waves were coming to shore along Fort Beach. The juxtaposition of someone fishing in the storm while standing on a small boat with waves crashing around Chandler Hovey Park was quite impressive. It was made more so by the relative size of the boat and Marblehead Light.

Day 1 – Crashing Waves from the Steps of Castle Rock

With the storm now passed and all images processed, I find myself with nineteen images to share with you. The Wave and the Causeway

The latest storm to hit our shores made landfall on Thursday, March 7th and the forecasters were predicting huge waves and storm surges at high tide. Though I had to drop off my son at school and be at work by 9, I figured there was enough time to sneak out of the house at daybreak and try to capture some storm shots. Exploding Waves at Castle Rock

After witnessing the power of Hurricane Sandy yesterday, I decided to head out again during the noon high tide to try to see if the remaining power of the storm might make for some interesting scenes. Hurricane Sandy Hits Marblehead

Hurricane Sandy came to Marblehead today and brought with her incredible winds and waves. I managed to drive out during my lunch hour and hit Surf Street then Devereux beach followed by some time spent catching waves crash on to and over the causeway. Sandy Meets Surf Street

As Hurricane Sandy makes her approach, the strength of the storm is starting to show. I went out today to shoot some long exposures at high tide (and am working on those now) but I couldn't resist grabbing a few shots of the waves hammering the sea wall. This is a shot from Surf Street which definitely earned its name today. Caught this one wave as it exploded and sent off a great curl back out to sea.

The Light Show over Marblehead Harbor

I posted a single strike yesterday after the storm powered through and before running out to chase rainbows. I later reviewed my shots and found a few more bolts. I decided to stack the shots together and highlight the impressive light show that mother nature put on. Fitting as an even bigger show will be erupting over the harbor in just over a week.

Caught a Bolt of Lightning over Marblehead Harbor

Great little storm just passed through and I was one of a few at Chandler Hovey park enjoying the light show. Took almost 900 images to capture this one perfect bolt. Had Pearl Jam's Nothingman in my head the whole time: 'Caught a bolt of lightning... Cursed the day he let it go'

So Long Irene

It looks like Hurricane Irene is making her way past with a bit of wind left over but, thankfully, very little damage reported so far. I ventured out after the rains let up around noon looking for more signs of Irene's power along the coast. I started at Spray Avenue where I could shoot the waves with some protection from the wind and spray. I then headed over to Greystone Beach which I have been wanting to shoot for some time.
