Abbot Hall

Abbot Tower and a Full Harbor

Today's image comes from July 16, 2013 and a boat trip in and around Marblehead Harbor. We made it into the harbor during sunset and I proceeded to compose and capture shot after shot.  I couldn't pass up the unique vantage points from water level looking past boats in their mooring toward Abbot Tower standing tall in the distance. With the tower currently shrouded by scaffolding and a red curtain, I thought it would be a good opportunity to revisit some of these images from the archives.  Enjoy.

Marblehead Harbor and the Red Cloaked Tower

On Tuesday, a storm approached Marblehead to the south and I thought I would try to capture some dramatic clouds and light.  I drove across the causeway to Marblehead Neck and scouted a number of vantage points and captured a few images at each.  In the end, a walk to the end of Peabody Lane and the public right of way there led me to this spot where all the elements came into place under some very nice light.  All except one... Abbot Hall tower is currently cloaked in red with scaffolding along its full height as much-needed repairs are [...]

Sun Rays over Abbot Hall and The Importance of Backups

This morning, while at work, I received this automated email message from my backup software: "This file or folder is sitting on a bad section of hard disk media and is unrecoverable. Delete this item (i.e. in the Finder) and restore it from a known good backup, then try the backup task again." The files it was referring to (15 in all) were on my main external hard drive that holds all of my images from Wednesdays in Marblehead as well as every image of my children.  In fact, there are almost 100,000 images housed on that drive which is [...]

Abbot Hall from Atop the Jeremiah Lee Mansion

Back to From the Rooftops Thursday and my trip to the cupola of the Jeremiah Lee Mansion.  Though the area is small, the 360 degree view through beautiful windows made for a number of photo opportunities. This image comes from a shot through the middle of one window facing back up Washington Street.  I had to use a technique called focus stacking to combine two images focused on the wood panel and then Abbot Hall in the distance in order to have both perfectly focused in the final image. A few more images from this unique location yet to come...

Rays of Light over Marblehead

On Saturday, the first Arts Fusion event took place at Abbot Hall as a fundraiser for the Marblehead Art Association and Marblehead Festival of Arts.  I had donated a framed print and copy of my to-be-published book and was excited to see the work on display. Before heading over there though, I noted clouds forming over the town and they seemed to be breaking up just enough to let some rays of light pass through.  I decided to drive out to Marblehead Neck to see if my hunch was right and discovered this scene from a vantage point on Corinthian [...]

Abbot Hall from the Cupola of the Jeremiah Lee Mansion

Another entry in the resurrected From the Rooftops Thursday comes from my photo shoot on the morning of April 9.  After capturing the view of Washington Street, Marblehead Harbor and Marblehead Light through the three panes looking to the east, I crossed the small cupola and composed this image. I was thankful that the scaffolding had not yet gone up on Abbot Hall tower and that I could capture this view of the homes along Washington Street leading up toward that iconic structure. Now that the weather is (slowly) warming, I'll be on the hunt for more rooftop views.  If [...]

Blue Magic in Marblehead Harbor

At the end of November, I decided to head out at sunset to capture views of the inner harbor from the causeway.  Conditions were cold but calm and the light of the setting sun reflected nicely off the overhead clouds. I found these three working boats perfectly positioned in Marblehead Harbor with Abbot Hall in the distance.  The title was easy given the name of the most prominent boat - Blue Magic.

Last Ones Out of Marblehead Harbor

Yesterday's bright sun and relative warmth helped erase some of the lingering cold from the too-long Winter.  It reminded me that Marblehead Harbor would soon start filling up with boats and so I looked to the archive for images of some of the last boats left in the harbor. In this image from October 22nd, you can make out more than a few boats on their moorings and the subtle colors of Fall in the trees around Abbot Hall. Won't be too much longer before Marblehead Harbor begins filling up with boats for a new season...

Crocker Park and Abbot Hall

I am posting this image of a snow covered Crocker Park and unique composition including Abbot Hall in the hopes that it might ward off the coming storm and keep our streets free of any more white flaky stuff.  This winter has been long and cold and really needs to come to an end. Let's see if this works...

The Working Boats and Abbot Hall

It had been exactly one month since I last went out to capture images in Marblehead.  And so, around sunset, I decided to head out and see if the clouds that had built up over the past few hours might lead to a decent sunset.  I drove across the causeway and looked back only to find the sky too overcast to let through much light.  The clouds over the harbor had some interesting structures though so I crossed and headed down to the water at Riverhead beach. I walked along the water so that I could place some distance between [...]
