Fighting the Current

This seemed like a good image to end the week on with rain in the forecast and with the crisp Fall air signaling the coming close of boating season.  As an offshore storm sent crashing waves into Marblehead beaches and Castle Rock, the harbor offered some protection for boats moored within its borders.  However, this one wooden sailboat perched near the mouth of the harbor was definitely fighting the current as whitecaps formed clear across the harbor. I'm not sure who owns this boat or even what class or type it might be but its clean lines and beautiful wooden [...]

Finding their Way in the Fog

I hope you're not tired of these foggy images yet because I was like a kid in a candy store out at Chandler Hovey Park for the hour of incredible light on the night of July 5th.  At this point, the light was starting to deepen and the fog had lifted a bit just as the Town class boats made their way back into the harbor.  I can't recall what boat created the two lines in the water but the two sailors in this small townie seemed to be finding their way in the fog by following the line in the [...]

Lunch at the Landing

Today's image comes from exactly two years ago - June 7, 2014 - and a trip aboard the Hannah Glover to visit Childrens Island.  It's only been two years but I can't recall why there was such an early tour of Childrens Island scheduled.  As you can see, we had picture perfect weather to escort us on the short trip to the island. Before we left the State Street Landing, I turned and captured this photo as a beautiful boat pulled up along the docks.  I'm guessing they were there for an early lunch at The Landing restaurant...

Moored in the Mouth of the Harbor

Today's image comes from June 21st and a trip across the causeway to this small beach at the end of Cove Lane.  This beach has become a favorite location to shoot Marblehead Light, oncoming or departing storms and, especially, the Aurora Borealis. On this day, I was searching for an image that would capture the warmth of the day.  The great Winter of 2015 was not yet a distant memory and any images of warmth were welcome.  With a lone sailboat moored in the mouth of the harbor and bathed in the golden light of the setting sun, I knew [...]

Clear View Across the Harbor

Continuing with images captured during Friday night's remarkable sunset, this view of houses along Marblehead harbor was one of the first shots taken.  I had started off shooting along Foster Street and was struck by the incredible clarity of the houses and Abbot Hall seen across the harbor. I watched as the clouds churned overhead and a break formed on either side of Abbot Hall and started to fill with the golden light of a pending sunset.  As luck would have it, a single beautiful ship was moored in Marblehead harbor and turned to its side just as the light [...]

Grounded on Fisherman’s Beach

Here is another image from my wanderings on Wednesday, March 2nd.  I shared an image from my last stop - Castle Rock - yesterday.  This image was from the middle of my journey chasing some great light after a rainstorm. I had been shooting at Doliber Cove under cloudy skies when the light finally broke through and I manage to get a few shots I was pleased with.  Having done so, I walked back to the car which was parked across the street from this spot.  My eyes quickly snagged on the bright orange boat grounded on Fisherman's Beach and I [...]

Catching the Snow Moon

I shared an image of the nearly full snow moon last night taken from Fort Beach and commented that I had little hope for capturing the full moon tonight.  As luck would have it, I finished up work right at 5pm and was able to make it down to the State Street Landing by 5:29pm - 4 minutes before the moonrise. I found two photographers already there ready to capture the beauty of a full moon rising over Marblehead Light and made my way a bit further down to see if I could line up this single boat out in [...]

Moonlit Reflection at Fort Beach

The unseasonably warm weather this weekend made Spring feel as though it was just around the corner.  As the warm air began to give way to slightly cooler weather this week, I spotted the chance for a good sunset and decided to head out to capture the scene from Fort Sewall.  Before I left, I noted that the nearly full moon was due to rise at 4:30pm (an hour before sunset) and thought I would aim for a shot of it as well since I wouldn't get the chance tomorrow night. I arrived at Fort Beach and found thick clouds [...]

The Christmas Full Moon

Last night, I shared an image of the Christmas full moon rising over Marblehead and illuminating the dinghy in Little Harbor with its perfect Christmas tree.  At the time, I had said that this wasn't the shot I had intended and, maybe subconsciously, knew that I would be trying again so I titled that image A Christmas Full Moon.  This image is the one I had envisioned and am so glad I headed out again tonight to capture it. After yesterday's adventure, I rechecked the time and location of tonight's moonrise and was pleased to see it would be late [...]

A Christmas Full Moon

The first Christmas full moon in nearly 40 years rose tonight over Marblehead and I had envisioned an image of the small dinghy in Little Harbor with its Christmas Tree as a perfect foreground for the shot.  As the fog and cloudy skies of this morning finally broke at 2pm, I started to wonder if I might actually be able to capture a shot of the Christmas full moon. I headed to Beacon Street and the Marblehead Lobster Company where I set up my camera and waited.  As I watched the darkening sky for any hint of the Christmas full [...]
