Foggy Sunsets on the Harbor

I found this shot in the To Be Posted archive last night and figured it was about time it saw the light of day. I captured this shot almost exactly 4 years ago (Sept 20, 2016) from the low tide area accessible from Corinthian Lane. I walked the length of this stretch of the Neck until I found the composition I was looking for with the sun setting aside Abbot Hall, a pier to the left with its flag limp due to lack of wind and layers of boats in the harbor. The mix of fog and late sun created [...]

Green Light in the Blue Hour

A few people thought yesterday's image of foliage at Seaside was a bit too soon so here is a shot from an early September evening captured one year ago - September 2, 2019.  I remember heading out on this night hoping that the clouds over the Neck might serve to reflect the light of sunset but the clouds never broke and I was left with a fairly monotone scene. I waited a bit past sunset for the blue hour and then spotted the reflection of Marblehead light's green beacon reflecting in the still water of the harbor. That and the [...]

Little Rainbow

It's a bit ironic that I had gone out on July 30th in the hopes of capturing a rainbow over Little Harbor but ended up wiht such a nice sunset that this shot of that little rainbow ended up as the fifth (and last) of the images shared from this outing. I had arrived to the Little Harbor Lobster Company lot at a little before 7:30pm and stayed in the car watching for signs of a rainbow after a summer rain passed through. I only noticed the one you see here by chance and managed to get this one shot [...]

Bathing in Light

Back from a week's staycation with this shot from that mid-August outing which featured the most varied light conditions I've seen in some time. From the same evening in which I captured the ominous sky over the causeway and Tinkers as well as the rainbow at Castle Rock and the vibrant sunset from the Pleon, I also found this scene of Marblehead Neck and Chandler Hovey Park bathing in light from the setting sun.  This was a surprisingly tough shot to capture and process with the sunlight on the Neck so bright and yellow that it seemed fake even while [...]

The Full Corn Moon

The full corn moon rose over Chandler Hovey Park tonight and I was one of a half dozen photographers among many more onlookers admiring the view of the moon rising over a collection of boats in the mouth of the harbor. When I arrived at Front Street I had been hoping for a different shot than what I came away with. The lights had been hung on the lighthouse early on in the COVID era and I envisioned a shot of the moon rising with the lighthouse resplendent in lights and a collection of boats filling the waters. As sunset [...]

Basking in the Light

As it turns out, 2020 was a great year for renovations in Marblehead including those to the facade and bones of Abbot Hall. With scaffolding surrounding the building, I have not found opportunity to shoot the building except at angles low enough that I could hide the surrounding netting. Finally in August, Abbot Hall shed its scaffolding and I found the building basking in the light of a late August day when I stopped along Ocean Avenue and made my way on foot to the short stretch of beach at the end of the causeway. From this vantage point, I [...]

Afterglow of a Summer Storm

This was my last stop of the night on Wednesday August 19 after shooting at Riverhead, the Causeway, Fort Beach and Castle Rock. By the time I arrived at the Pleon Yacht Club, the sun had dipped below the horizon and I thought I had missed the best light. As I set up and composed a tighter shot, the afterglow of the summer storm seemed to breathe a second wind into the evening light and I captured this view of the harbor and Abbot hall in the distance.

Little Harbor Sky

On July 30th, I headed out to chase after a rainbow with a storm passing overhead and found myself near the Little Harbor Lobster Company waiting to see what might come of the sunset. I was losing hope as the clouds seemed to be racing away but then spotted a huge cloud to my right heading towards the lighthouse just as another had come in from the left headed towards Gerry Island. I watched and waited as the clouds converged and then the sun dipped below the cloud cover and bathed the scent in soft sunset light. I was pretty [...]

Liberty & Co

This image was captured 20 minutes before Thursday night's incredible sunset when I had just arrived at the Little Harbor Lobster Company lot and was watching the sky hoping for a rainbow or some decent light. This was the first of the 'good light' and I decided on a tight composition including the three dinghies and lone sailboat near the channel marker.  It was only later when working on the image that I spotted the dinghy's name - Liberty.

Little Harbor – After the Storm

That was quite the storm that passed overhead before sunset! Our home weather station recorded rainfall of 3 inches per hour before the storm finally departed and, as soon as it did, I was in my car and headed out in search of a rainbow. I drove to Hammond Park and then decided to visit Little Harbor where I spotted the faintest rainbow overhead. It wasn't the image I hoped for but I spotted some interesting clouds coalescing behind Gerry Island and decided to watch and see if the sun might shine at the right moment to illuminate the scene. [...]
