Dawn of the Summer Season

The unofficial start of the Summer season begins at dawn on Memorial Day as captured in this image taken at Crocker Park.  Yesterday I posted the first image from my Memorial Day dawn shoot at Crocker Park with a beautiful crescent moon hanging over Marblehead Light.  This was one of the last images I took on that morning. The light kept building but an unfortunate cloud bank kept the sun from entering the scene as I kept trying out varying compositions.  At 5:10 am (40 minutes after the crescent moon image), the light finally heat its peak. I sought to [...]

Leave the Light On under a Crescent Moon

I went to sleep on Sunday night after checking forecasts for the morning and thinking there was a descent chance at a good sunrise.  The chance wasn't quite high enough for me to set an alarm but I figured that if I woke in time, I would head out the door. Sure enough I woke at 4am and took that as a sign of good things to come.  I had mapped out the direction of the sunrise and decided that Crocker Park would offer the best vantage point.  I was pleasantly surprised to see how much Marblehead Harbor had filled [...]

Sunset over Marblehead and some Creative License

When working on images of Marblehead, I allow myself some creative license in cloning out elements that are distracting to the scene.  This might mean filling in a bald patch of grass, removing litter that I hadn't spotted at the time to physically pick up or, in the case of the harbor, removing buoys and mooring markers.  While a filled harbor will remain untouched by my clone brush, an empty or not-yet-filled one often looks better after removing many of these markers. In the case of this image, there was one other element that I felt justified in removing - [...]

Dawn over Marblehead Harbor

I had considered heading out this morning for a dawn/sunrise shoot but the forecast seemed to call for clear skies which usually lead to fairly boring color.  Instead, I found this image from a dawn shoot in early August of last year to share. As this was taken in mid-Summer, Marblehead Harbor is filled to capacity with boats on their moorings.  The colors of this dawn morning reflected beautifully in the waters of the harbor and the streaks of clouds above. It won't be much longer before we can count on regular warm days and can revisit Marblehead Harbor filled [...]

Sun Rays over Abbot Hall and The Importance of Backups

This morning, while at work, I received this automated email message from my backup software: "This file or folder is sitting on a bad section of hard disk media and is unrecoverable. Delete this item (i.e. in the Finder) and restore it from a known good backup, then try the backup task again." The files it was referring to (15 in all) were on my main external hard drive that holds all of my images from Wednesdays in Marblehead as well as every image of my children.  In fact, there are almost 100,000 images housed on that drive which is [...]

Pink Sunset over Marblehead Harbor filled with Boats

After the incredible weather that we experienced on Mother's Day and with today's expected continued warmth, it's only a matter of time before Marblehead Harbor is filled with boats.  This was the view on an early June evening at sunset when a beautiful sky, made up of pinks reflected off clouds above, washed over Marblehead Harbor. I was standing on the Boston Yacht Club float on this particular evening as I had just captured an image of the cannon firing at sunset when this sunset began to take shape.  I stayed on the floating dock as the composition from water [...]

Rays of Light over Marblehead

On Saturday, the first Arts Fusion event took place at Abbot Hall as a fundraiser for the Marblehead Art Association and Marblehead Festival of Arts.  I had donated a framed print and copy of my to-be-published book and was excited to see the work on display. Before heading over there though, I noted clouds forming over the town and they seemed to be breaking up just enough to let some rays of light pass through.  I decided to drive out to Marblehead Neck to see if my hunch was right and discovered this scene from a vantage point on Corinthian [...]

Blue Magic in Marblehead Harbor

At the end of November, I decided to head out at sunset to capture views of the inner harbor from the causeway.  Conditions were cold but calm and the light of the setting sun reflected nicely off the overhead clouds. I found these three working boats perfectly positioned in Marblehead Harbor with Abbot Hall in the distance.  The title was easy given the name of the most prominent boat - Blue Magic.

Last Ones Out of Marblehead Harbor

Yesterday's bright sun and relative warmth helped erase some of the lingering cold from the too-long Winter.  It reminded me that Marblehead Harbor would soon start filling up with boats and so I looked to the archive for images of some of the last boats left in the harbor. In this image from October 22nd, you can make out more than a few boats on their moorings and the subtle colors of Fall in the trees around Abbot Hall. Won't be too much longer before Marblehead Harbor begins filling up with boats for a new season...

The Working Boats and Abbot Hall

It had been exactly one month since I last went out to capture images in Marblehead.  And so, around sunset, I decided to head out and see if the clouds that had built up over the past few hours might lead to a decent sunset.  I drove across the causeway and looked back only to find the sky too overcast to let through much light.  The clouds over the harbor had some interesting structures though so I crossed and headed down to the water at Riverhead beach. I walked along the water so that I could place some distance between [...]
