Light Under the Rainbow

We started Saturday July 2nd with some rain and then had thunderstorms threaten but ended up veering to the south of us. I had gone out at 6pm hoping to capture some lightning but watches as the cells fell apart on radar. However, as rain formed and looked like it might clip Marblehead, I decided to head out once more - this time to Front Street. I arrived and could see rain in the distance behind Marblehead Light and the sun had appeared but there was no rainbow to be found. I waited and another shower hit after which I [...]

Purple Rain over the Harbor

Shortly after yesterday's image of that orange sky over Crocker, the thunderstorm arrived and a mix of wind and rain pelted the few people at Crocker Park. I stood under the gazebo and watched the sky, then radar, hoping the storm would move fast enough to allow me to capture a rainbow over the Neck. The storm ended up building then stalling so I missed the chance for a rainbow but made sure to run out as the rain slowed to take in the view of purple rain over the harbor. The rain was actually to my left over the [...]

Top 10 of 2021 – #7 – Panoramic Gold

On June 15th, I chased some promising clouds to Crocker Park and left one hour later with 13 images that I shared over the next few weeks. This panorama was made up of 16 vertical images captured with my widest lens at the peak of golden light (it would later shift to pink). Though I came away with 13 keepers, this is the best representation of the night and the numerous available compositions looking towards the mouth of the harbor and causeway. For the perfect clouds, perfect light and the joy of feeling like a kid in a candy store [...]

Golden Light of Summer

I really hate the end of Daylight Savings Time and so, with that in mind, I instantly gravitated to this shot taken after 8pm (!!!) on June 15th when an awesome sunset shifted to shades of gold. That golden light seems to be most strongly associate with early summer evenings and I was thrilled to be out there to witness and capture it. As we trudge toward colder days and ever earlier sunsets, I to hold on to the memory of warm and long days of summer in Marblehead.

Tuckers Wharf Dawn

I was looking for an image to share and happened upon this one captured as the sun appeared over Marblehead Neck just after dawn on October 3rd. I was standing at Tuckers Wharf to try to maximize the number of boats seen in the harbor. I lucked out with the light on this morning as it transitioned from a yellow-orange dawn to a pink sunrise.  I love these late sunrises in the fall solely for the opportunity to get out and capture them at a reasonable hour.

Anticrepuscular Sunset

On October 20th, I headed out to capture the moonset and was disappointed by the small band of low lying clouds that obstructed my view. Less than 30 minutes later when I actually would have loved to have clouds reflecting the light of the rising sun, they were nowhere to be found. Instead I lucked out when I spotted these thin anticrepuscular rays behind Crocker Park. With the light hitting Abbot hall, St. Michaels and Grace Community Church, the rays added just enough interest to the otherwise empty sky on this fall morning in Marblehead.

Reflections on a Good Summer

I was looking for a photo to share having built up my 'to be posted' archive with several productive outings and happened upon this image captured at dawn on October 3rd. I had lucked out with a far nicer than expected dawn and sunrise and made sure to capture it with various compositions. Here I tried to accentuate the reflections of boats on the still waters of Marblehead Harbor which was serving almost like a mirror to bring color throughout the scene. As I tried to figure out a good title, I thought that 'Reflections on a Good Summer' suited [...]

Dawn’s Early Light

On Sunday morning, I awoke just after 5am and decided to make the most of that with a photo outing at the State Street Landing. I had checked sunrise location and times and thought I read that the sun would cross the horizon at 6:20am. Given that, I drove out early and arrived at State Street to find a slowly developing yellow-orange glow of dawn's early light. The light had a great effect on the still waters of Marblehead Harbor but, within minutes, had disappeared leaving a mostly grey view. I waited and waited but did not see signs of [...]

GameDay Sunrise

And I almost missed it... I woke up this morning just after 5 for no good reason and decided to take advantage of the early wake up with a photo outing. I quickly scouted out the location of the sunrise as well as predicted cloud cover and didn't hold too much hope for a nice showing but drove down to the State Street landing anyway. I arrived too early but was treated to a nice orange dawn that then seemed to fizzle out just as the sun rose into a bank of clouds. I picked up the tripod and camera [...]

A Light After the Storm

Yesterday was an awful, terrible, gut punch of a day... I shared a photo of the Marblehead varsity football game that I had shot on Friday night and left at 8am to shoot the JV game. I was excited to capture moments that these kids would hopefully take to heart and love the idea of finding those moments of camaraderie and greatness that seem to only come in the younger years. But then, 10 minutes into the game, an awful leg injury occurred. I literally dropped my camera and headed to the fallen player to see if there was anything [...]
