Top 10 of 2021 – Honorable Mention – ‘The Catch’

As I do at the end of each, I have looked back at every one of the 100 images I captured in Marblehead in 2021 and selected my top 10.  2021 served as a 'comeback' year from the low of 77 images taken in 2020 to closer to the 150-200 taken each of the past 10 years now. This was also the year where I took up sports photography when my son joined the Marblehead High School JV football team. I captured every one of their games and was able to shoot at a number of the varsity games including [...]

Top 10 of 2020 – #1 – Gold Coast, Marblehead

This was my favorite outing of the 2020. On June 24th, I headed to Devereux Beach and the causeway chasing the tail end of a rainstorm at sunset to find an incredibly vibrant rainbow and then a sunset that exploded in light and color lasting almost 30 minutes before it was done. I have many favorite images from this evening but I kept going back to this one of peak color in the sky creating a gold coast from the sands of Devereux. For the perfect color in the clouds, the reflections in the sand, that small wave coming to [...]

Top 10 of 2020 – #2 – Lightning Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

We had a fairly active pattern of storms at the end of August with this image being captured on August 23 (4 days after the outing with storms and rainbows). I had gone out to a favorite spot along Corinthian Lane to watch this storm coming towards Marblehead just as sunset approached. I set up to try to capture lightning while also keeping the shutter speed fast enough to keep the boats in sharp focus. There's a lot of luck when it comes to lightning shots and I definitely lucked out when I saw this huge bolt just as the [...]

Top 10 of 2020 – #3 – Little Harbor Dawn

I struggle some years with whether to include a recent image not knowing if it will stay a favorite once the short term memories of taking it have worn off. This image of dawn in Little Harbor was not a tough decision. I knew the moment I clicked the shutter that this would be one of my favorites of 2020 and, coming in December after such a long year, made it even more enjoyable. For the sheer beauty of light on a very late dawn (nearly 7am) in Marblehead, this is my third favorite image of Marblehead taken in 2020.

Top 10 of 2020 – #4 – Low Tide at Fort Beach

And this is the third of my top 10 images captured on August 19th. Like I said in the last image of the rainbow from Castle Rock, I kept switching the positions of these two images but, in the end, the composition of this one edged out the other. I stopped here at 6:40pm chasing the clouds you see above the Neck but pulled over for the collection of boats at low tide. With calm waters, the reflections of the boats and sky really stood out and I took this shot from a different position than I normally would as [...]

Top 10 of 2020 – #5 – Rainbow Sky over Castle Rock

I don't think this has ever happened before but there are three images in my top 10 all captured on the same day (though two outings). It's probably a testament to the fewer times I went out this year but also goes to show just how much the light can change in the span of a few hours. This is the second shot from August 19th (the first was #10 of boats in the harbor) and the third will be tomorrow's image (though I kept switching the positions of these and had a hard time deciding which I liked more). [...]

Top 10 of 2020 – #6 – Around the Fort

This is one of those images that I like as much for the circumstances in which it was taken as the final image. We had gone out to meet our former neighbor (and kids' surrogate grandfather in town) at the BYC for a dignhy ride around the harbor on a warm early summer afternoon (June 20th at 3pm). Not 5 minutes into the ride, he offered my daughter take the helm and she piloted us around under his direct supervision. I was there to shoot images of Marblehead from the water but spent as much time shooting them piloting as [...]

Top 10 of 2020 – #7 – Bird’s Eye View

I hadn't flown my drown in months (if at all) when I took it out on September 29, 2020. I flew straight up to a ceiling of 400 foot planning to scout the foliage around Abbot Hall but found very little in the way of colors (other than green). I took a few shots anyway and it wasn't until I returned home and saw this on a big screen that I appreciated all the little details found in it. For being an unexpected favorite, this bird's eye view is my seventh favorite image of Marblehead captured in 2020.

Top 10 of 2020 – #8 – Halloween Blue Moon

I'm a sucker for a nice moonrise and, when everything comes together as on Halloween 2020, these images tend to become instant favorites. I headed out to Crocker Park on October 31st at just before 6pm and wasn't sure if there was haze at the horizon that might block my view of the moon. As it turned out, the blue moon shone bright as it cleared Childrens Island.   The 400mm lens helped create a sense of closeness between the boats, Marblehead Light and the moon as it rose. For the simplicity of watching the moon rise over Marblehead harbor, this [...]

Top 10 of 2020 – #9 – Glover’s March to Old Burial Hill

The complete opposite of the last shot - this was a really tough shot to get. It was really cold on this February evening, there was almost no light and we were all gathered between headstones at Old Burial Hill (with two newspaper photographers there as well). I had no room for a tripod so opened up the lens to its maximum aperture and adjusted the ISO so I could handhold and be assured of a sharp image. I used the lanterns as a focal point (partly because it was too dark to focus on anything else). With a shutter [...]
