Top 10 of 2021 – #1 – Spring in the Park

And we have reached my favorite image of 2021. first I want to thank everyone for what ended up being a incredible year for calendar and print sales. For the first time ever, I had three separate calendar printings and received such kind works about the images chosen. I also had the fortune of hanging my work at Eat Well Kitchen where many of the prints sold right off the wall. It really is the highest of compliments for a photographer to have someone connect with an image to the point of wanting to hang a print in their home. [...]

Top 10 of 2021 – #2 – Remembering the Sunrise

This might be a first - my top 2 images were taken within 24 hours of each other. This sunrise was captured on the morning of April 15 and my #1 favorite of the year was taken at sunset the night before. At this point in the year, I hadn't shot a sunrise in over 3 months (which seems weird now as I have been capturing images of the dawn for the past few weeks). I decided to head to the end of Doak's Lane on this particular morning as the low tide and predicted location of the rising sun [...]

Top 10 of 2021 – #3 – Best Laid Plans

Sometimes a photo makes the top 10 more for the memory of the outing than the quality of light. Such was the case on November 19th when I drove straight from work to Chandler Hovey Park in the hopes of shooting a moonrise and walked back to the car freezing and without a single shot of the moon that stayed hidden behind clouds.  That was when I spotted this scene with a small pool of rainwater offering the chance of a reflection. I swapped to my widest lens and set up for this shot with a longer exposure to pull [...]

Top 10 of 2021 – #4 – Hunting the Moon at Redd’s Pond

Though the site is called Wednesday in Marblehead, I more often than not shoot on other days of the week. However, this is the second top 10 image in a row captured on a Wednesday - this time October 20th. This was a busy day with a dawn moonset shoot, a stop at Eat Well Kitchen to discuss putting up prints for the month of December (they are still up though several have sold) then a trip to Brown's Island for an unexpectedly great sunset and, finally, a chance check at Redd's to capture the light of the moon. I [...]

Top 10 of 2021 – #5 – First Rainbow of the Season

On Wednesday, May 12th, I heard rain falling within an hour of sunset and quickly grabbed my gear, hopped in the car and drove. As I headed down Humphrey then Smith and onto Atlantic, I kept looking every which way but couldn’t spot any rainbows. I decided to turn down Commercial Street to the float near Hammond Park and only when I crested the small hill did I spot the brilliant light. I had lucked out with the rainbow appearing near the end of the causeway where it met the Neck. I jumped out and threw on a circular polarizer [...]

Top 10 of 2021 – #6 – Boats in the Harbor and Fire in the Sky

It's a sure bet that anytime I'm able to capture a sunset as vibrant as this, it will make the top 10 list.  This was the scene on May 16th at the awesome time of 7:58pm as the sun broke through a small gap above the tree line and below the clouds.  As the sun disappeared from view, the light became more and more vibrant until it formed this fire in the sky. For the sheer awesomeness of color in the sky as well as memories of 8pm sunsets, this is my 6th favorite image of 2021.

Top 10 of 2021 – #7 – Panoramic Gold

On June 15th, I chased some promising clouds to Crocker Park and left one hour later with 13 images that I shared over the next few weeks. This panorama was made up of 16 vertical images captured with my widest lens at the peak of golden light (it would later shift to pink). Though I came away with 13 keepers, this is the best representation of the night and the numerous available compositions looking towards the mouth of the harbor and causeway. For the perfect clouds, perfect light and the joy of feeling like a kid in a candy store [...]

Top 10 of 2021 – #8 – October Dawn

I wrote at the time: "As a photographer, I’ve learned to trust my sixth sense which includes when I wake up before dawn, it means conditions are good for a sunrise shoot. With that in mind, I silently left the house at 6am and drove along Humphrey Street trying to judge the light. I spotted some faint pinks in the sky and turned onto Ocean then Atlantic before deciding to make my way to Front Street where the light seemed strongest." Strong turned out to be an understatement as pink-purple light positively erupted in the sky over Fort Beach on [...]

Top 10 of 2021 – #9 – Ware the Leaves Fall

It had been a few years since I had last captured an image of the fall foliage along Ware lane. Despite this spot being 3 blocks from my house and my looking at it on nearly every walk with the dog, years passed without a composition calling to me like 'Liquid Gold' had in the past with a perfect pool of rainwater reflecting the colors of fall. On November 10th, that changed with perfect conditions including just enough wind for me to set up and capture a leaf falling in the shaft of sunlight creating a dynamic composition. For the [...]

Top 10 of 2021 – #10 – Moonrise over the Neck

I'm not sure how many times I've shot the moonrise at this point and so, when I come upon a new composition, I get excited. The full pink moon rose on April 26 and I decided to shoot it from Screaming Lady Cove along Front street just to the right of the Barnacle restaurant. The timing of the moonrise coupled with clear skies created a pink glow in the sky while the houses along the Neck were bathed in golden light. The lone beautiful sailboat perfectly situated on its mooring...instant favorite. For the shear joy of finding a new composition [...]
