Marblehead Harbor

Coming to port with an aerial escort

As we neared The Landing under the incredibly dramatic sky, I noted this view with Abbot Hall's tower jutting up behind the homes lining the harbor.  As luck would have it, a seagull appeared and decided to fly to just the right point to make the composition stand out (I promise he/she is real and has not been Photoshopped into place).  It's no wonder that this is such a sailing town when you can experience such views when you return to harbor (let alone all that you see when you leave our protected waters).

Passing Front Street and the Old North Church

Continuing on our journey back from Childrens Island, we passed these beautiful homes on Front Street.  I had never seen these from the water before and they really are amazing.  The golden steeple of the Old North Church shines in the background and the few boats left in the harbor serve to balance out the scene.  The journey continues next week but a new view From the Rooftop will be posted tomorrow.

Heading into the Harbor

As we made our way back into town on board the Hannah Glover from Childrens Island, this was one of the first scenes I captured under the developing dramatic sky.  The clouds and light were surreal and I tried to capture the feel of coming back into the harbor after a day of sailing and seeing the familiar landmark of Abbot Hall welcoming you home.  Tomorrow brings us a step closer to The Landing...stay tuned.

Sailing across the harbor

Near the end of October, we headed out to Childrens Island for the YMCA Fall Festival.  While there, I explored the views looking back toward town and found this great one with Abbot Hall on one end and Marblehead Light on the other.  The only thing missing was a boat for this sailing town and, luckily enough, a single sailboat began to journey across the waters just as the light and clouds made for the perfect scene. Expect to see more photos from our journey back to town on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week and the beginning of the [...]

From the Rooftops – Lee Street and the Harbor

I started the rooftop project in late August and this was one of the first private homes that I was invited to shoot from.  The owners had responded to a flyer I addressed to them and were more than happy to share this view from their Lee street home with fellow Marbleheaders.  I have to admit being overwhelmed when I first stood on this roof and tried to take in the sites below.  The vantage point was perfect with neat houses that have stood in these spots for 200 years.  The harbor was filled with boats and you can make [...]

Rooftop Thursday – The Terraces on Lookout Court

As I began on this new project to photograph Marblehead from above, I was fortunate to run across a photo taken at The Terraces Bed and Breakfast run by Sylvia and John Philbrook from their home on Lookout Court.  We made plans to meet there when the room was free and I was thrilled to see this view as I entered.  I needed to time this right as traffic was surprisingly busy below on Lee Street with a moving truck stuck there for a while.  This was taken near the end of September so the harbor was thankfully still filled [...]

A Halloween Regatta on the steps of Abbot Hall

Bit of a late entry today as I could not make up my mind which of three shots to post.  I asked fans on my Facebook page to weigh in and this was the unanimous winner.  On October 29, the Eastern Yacht Club sponsored an in-harbor regatta.  Given the location and the promise of colorful sails, I knew that I couldn't miss this opportunity and headed down to the Neck long lens in hand.  I set up near the Pleon yacht club and braced myself against the wind as the boats moved across familiar landmarks. As I mentioned, I ended [...]

Keep it Local – Stand up Paddleboarding

It's local business Friday and this is one of the newest businesses in town - Standup paddle-boarding.  This new approach to exploring the harbors in town came on to the scene at the end of June and really took off.  I was on Brown's Island when I saw this group float by and took this photo to illustrate just how close you can get to various landmarks by paddle-boarding.  Plus, as the weather cools, it is nice to be reminded of the amazing options that abound in the Summer.  Stay warm...

Out for a swim in a foggy harbor

Another image from that thick foggy Summer day back in 2008.  It's amazing what you can find when leafing through old photos.  I had remembered the causeway shot as a favorite but then explored others I had taken that day as I walked around our new hometown (we had moved here about 6 weeks earlier).  As I stood on the causeway taking in the view (what limited one there was with the incredibly dense fog), I found this trio of ducks making their way deeper into the harbor.  The juxtaposition of ducks and boats all enveloped in fog seemed great [...]
