Marblehead Harbor

Alone in the Fog

It seems like we have had more foggy days this year than every before.  During a particularly long stretch in May, I ventured down to the water to try to capture the few boats already in the harbor amidst the dense fog.  This boat struck me for its bright blue and the lack of any other boats around it.  It seemed quite lonely yet peaceful in that one spot.  More foggy shots to come this week leading into 'cemetery week' after that.  Stay tuned...

The Sun Sets on Cliff Street

In early Summer, I began exploring the area around the causeway.  I spent the day walking along the causeway and back on the rocks below trying to find interesting compositions.  I noticed that Abbot hall kept peaking through at various points and noted some of my favorites.  One night in early June, the sunset seemed to hold promise and I drove out to the causeway.  I grabbed this close-up view featuring three beautiful houses on Cliff Street with Abbot Hall visible over their roofs. I have another favorite from this night that I'll post tomorrow...

The Corinthian and the Harbor

At the corner of Kimball and Nahant Streets lies a small parking spot and an overlook.  The tide was going out and I was struck by the great lines of the Corinthian Yacht Club juxtaposed against the harbor, a great cloud and Abbot Hall in the background.  Then I noticed the seagull perched on the roof and knew I had to capture this image.

What Lies Beneath

After exploring the Cove and photographing the boats tied to the shore, I waded a bit deeper and discovered a bed of seaweed at my feet.  I carefully composed this shot to show the seaweed and rocks underneath the water and the pier overlooking the harbor with Abbot Hall seen in the distance.  I used a circular polarizer to cut through the reflections in the water and show 'what lies beneath'.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

The Cove

August 20th began as a gray day and I just about had to force myself to get out and explore town while my wife and kids attended a birthday party.  As I drove around and found myself heading to the Neck, I noted that the sky was clearing up nicely.  I decided to stop at Cove Lane which is a public right of way to the harbor and was thrilled to see the tide was in a bit and the water perfectly clear and calm.  It also turned out to be surprisingly warm so I wandered in with the tripod [...]

Lunch at the Yacht Club

As I biked around the neck in July, I happened to turn down the street where this yacht club resides and noticed its outdoor seating area for the first time.  I asked permission to photograph it and was thrilled to be given the opportunity to shoot this breath-taking scene.  This was taken at 9:30am so it wasn't quite time for lunch but the sun was at my back and perfectly illuminated Marblehead harbor filled with boats on their moorings.  I can only imagine how peaceful it would be to sit here and have some lunch...and a beer or two.  For [...]

The Brick Oil House at Chandler Hovey Park

Yesterday's Reflection shot was taken while my older camera was shooting a time lapse movie of the sun setting over the harbor.  While waiting for it to finish, I wandered around Chandler Hovey park looking for compositions and angles that I hadn't yet shot.  I noticed the sun setting over the brick oil house that used to power Marblehead Light and decided to close down the aperture and turn the bright sun into a sunstar.  Having the tree there helped add to the composition as did the full harbor.

Reflections on a Year

Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of this website.  What started as a desire to learn more about my new hometown by shooting photos every Wednesday, has turned into an incredible experience.  In this past year, I have published 94 posts of images of this town.  Over 200 people have 'liked' the Wednesdays in Marblehead Facebook page.  Fifty people signed up to receive regular email updates.  The home page has been viewed over 1200 times (at least since I installed the plugin to keep count).   Meanwhile, I have become a member of the Marblehead Arts Association.  I've [...]

Marblehead from the Water

This is the last shot from our brief sail out of the Marblehead harbor.  I looked back after seeing the boats headed to their races and saw the town laid out in front of me.  I managed to get the entirety of the Neck with its lighthouse, the harbor filled with boats, and the mainland with Abbot standing tall.  I like this perspective of our town on a warm Summer day.
