Piers of Gold in Marblehead Harbor

I apologize if the Sting song 'Fields of Gold' becomes stuck in your head when reading this image title but Piers of Gold just fit too well to pass up.  This is the third image shared so far from last Thursday's flight over Marblehead Harbor.  As the sun dipped lower toward the horizon, the golden hour washed Marblehead Neck in perfect light.  I maneuvered the Phantom 4 Pro over these two docks and composed the image to include the Neck circling toward the Corinthian and Marblehead Light beyond while including the boats in the harbor reflecting the light of sunset.

Castle Rock on Marblehead Neck

This image of Castle Rock on Marblehead Neck was captured on Wednesday, June 20th shortly after I shot the wider panorama encompassing the whole of the Neck.  While the panorama afforded a birds eye view of the Neck and harbor beyond, I really like this close up of Castle Rock for its unique view of the rocky outcropping. For all the times I have shot from atop the rock or used it in a composition, this view of the rock itself has eluded me.  With the clouds above and boats beyond, Castle Rock's central location along the Neck is accentuated [...]

Solar Flare over Marblehead Harbor

On Thursday night, I had set up at Harvard Street with my main camera on a tripod and the Phantom 4 Pro overhead to capture what promised to be a solid sunset.  As the sun dipped lower in the sky, I turned the drone so that the sunlight washed across the front lens creating a solar flare and bathing the scene in a red glow. The view of boats filling the moorings in Marblehead Harbor is one of the main reasons I purchased the drone.  Capturing them from the air creates a separation and depth to the final image that [...]

Castle under the Clouds on Marblehead neck

Yesterday afternoon offered picture perfect conditions for aerial imagery of Marblehead Neck and I was fortunate to have taken the day off from work to capture the views.  I watched as the clouds filled in and then broke apart in the early morning hours and left the house a little after 11:00am to explore the possible images. I stopped at Desmoulin Lane at first and flew off shore but quickly decided that the clouds favored compositions from Castle Rock.  I drove there and flew again to find this incredible view of Marblehead Neck laid out before me. I doubt that [...]

Gerry Island Sunset

On June 9, I had gone out to capture the moonrise from Fort Sewall and brought my Phantom 4 Pro drone along to see how that might handle the full moon rising over the harbor.  Before the moon could rise, the sun set and I found myself with the wrong lens and poorly positioned to capture it from the ground. I quickly launched the drone and flew it over the water to this spot looking down on Glover Island at high tide.  The sun was just about to dip below the horizon as I captured this image of the last [...]

Doliber Cove and the Dr Seuss Tree

I know I'm not the only one in town who is fascinated by the Dr Seuss tree that can be found along the water at the edge of Crowninshield Road.  As I flew the Phantom 4 Pro from Grace Oliver Beach and over Doliber Cove, I kept Brown's Island to my right and moved into position to capture the tree on the left. At this height, the shallow depths of Doliber Cove become much more evident though most who have bathed in these waters can attest to its height.  It won't be much longer before boats tie up together to [...]

Marblehead Sunset – 1 if by Land, 2 if by Air

On Saturday night, I once again chased a promising sunset across the causeway to Marblehead Neck and ended up on Parker Lane.  From there I set up my 'real' camera at the top of the stairs and also decided to fly my drone overhead as I wondered which might offer the better composition.  I ended up taking two different shots within three minutes of each other and still can't decide which view I prefer. The shot of this Marblehead Sunset by land has much better color and detail in the sky and the choice of a longer effective focal length [...]

Black Joe’s Pond

I've only captured two images of Black Joe's Pond in all these years of shooting landscapes in Marblehead and, as soon as I purchased my aerial camera (Phantom 4 Pro), I knew I would try to find a new angle on this great pond.  As it happened, we had picture perfect conditions on a recent Sunday in May and I headed out to Gingerbread Hill to scout out possible locations.  I ended up parking along Norman Street and then took off over dense foliage to find an interesting composition. Once I was up in the air, I found too many different viewpoints [...]

Sailing on Redd’s Pond

On a recent Sunday, I decided to head out and capture aerial images of Marblehead's ponds.  One of my first stops was at this familiar one where I found model boats sailing on Redd's pond.  As the guys maneuvered their boats using remote controls to control the sails, I piloted my aerial drone overhead and found this composition. I tried to find a perfect spot from which I could capture the action on Redd's pond as well as the vibrant trees and red house across the water.  At the same time, I was hoping to catch a mirrored image of [...]

Boats in the Harbor

On Saturday night, I watched the clouds form and break and scouted out the various webcams pointed at Marblehead Harbor until I finally decided to get up and hope for a good sunset.  I grabbed my camera as well as the Phantom 4 Pro with a specific location in mind. I drove across the causeway looking in my rearview mirror still unsure which way the sunset would go and parked along Foster Street in front of the Eastern Yacht Club.  There I was greeted by the sounds of a steel drum band and learned that an engagement party was taking [...]
