Spring has Sprung in Marblehead

I think we can safely say that Spring has sprung in Marblehead.  I was sitting at home on this Wednesday as rain fell outside and saw sunlight suddenly stream through the window as the rain slowed.  I looked at my wife and she quickly said 'go ahead' at which point I grabbed my gear and headed out hoping for a rainbow. I drove to Riverhead beach and saw a very faint rainbow form as soon as I parked.  I flew the Phantom 4 Pro across the harbor to find a solid composition but the rainbow never fully formed.  Instead, I happened upon [...]

First One into the Harbor

After the past two days of perfect weather, I can't be the only waiting eagerly awaiting those warm Summer days.  I decided to look through my archive of 'to be posted' images to find ones taken in April and instantly settled on this shot for today's post. On April 25, 2015, I had gone out near sunset on an equally warm night and found a single sailboat already moored in the waters.  Its positioning was perfect from this angle on Parker Lane and it appeared to be the 'first one in the harbor' - or at least this part of [...]

Racing by Old North Church

Today's image comes from mid-February and an unusually warm day for watching and capturing frostbite sailing in Marblehead Harbor.  I had been shooting the sailboats primarily from the air but switched to my camera as they grouped together and captured this shot of the boats racing by Old North Church. With this arctic blast of cold in the third week of March, I don't think I'm alone in looking for reminders that Spring should be here soon and with it more boats in the water.

Framed by the Pier House

This weekend, frostbite sailing took place in Marblehead harbor under Spring-like conditions and I couldn't pass up the chance to capture images of the sailboats maneuvering inside of the harbor.  In between closeups of the boats against familiar backdrops and shots taken by drone, I spotted sailboats passing through the open door of the Eastern Yacht Club pier house. I quickly recomposed my shot to include the whole of the EYC pier house just as a sailboat passed through the door opening.  The sun poked out from behind the clouds for a brief moment to add a warm glow to [...]

Frostbite Sailing in Marblehead Harbor – A Fifty Foot View

Yesterday was my 42nd birthday and I was fortunate to start it with a homemade breakfast with my wife and kids and end it with a great dinner out.  In the middle of the day, I couldn't think of anything more fun than enjoying the Spring-like weather and flying my Phantom 4 Pro drone over Marblehead Harbor to capture scenes of frostbite sailing. The conditions were perfect for sailing with light winds and intermittently great for photography with cloudy skies and occasional breaks of brilliant light.  I took turns shooting stills and video with the drone and switching to the real [...]

Top 10 of 2016 – #2 – Sailing Under the Sunset

This is the second image in the Top 10 of 2016 countdown to have been taken on the night of July 5th and was an easy choice for the #2 spot (it was actually #1 until December 14th when it got bounced for that top slot).  As the sun set through the building fog on this night, it created an incredible diffuse orange light.  I was shooting various compositions in this light and then spotted two townies sailing under the sunset light.  The picture perfect light and warmth of the final scene with the silhouettes of the sailors visible combined [...]

Sailing in the Glow of a Foggy Sunset

The night of July 5th offered the most incredible light I have witnessed since starting Wednesdays in Marblehead in 2010.  The combination of late day fog and the setting sun made for a breathtaking view of a foggy sunset over Marblehead Harbor.  From my spot at Chandler Hovey Park, I was able to shoot countless scenes as the light changed including a few of folks sailing in the glow of a foggy sunset. I've shared a closer view of a sailboat making its way into the harbor before but also had this vertical view that I couldn't help but share [...]

Sailing in the Harbor

As I waited for the supermoon to rise over Chandler Hovey Park, I spotted this sailboat making its way into Marblehead Harbor.  I quickly adjusted my camera settings and made use of the incredible 600mm lens to isolate the boat sailing in the harbor against the sunlit backdrop of houses on the Neck. With the days getting colder and sunset arriving sooner and sooner, this image of the crew of the Rozi enjoying one of the last sails of the season seemed a good way to start off the weekend.  Don't forget to visit me at the BYC on Saturday from [...]

Sailing Past the Eastern Yacht Club

Another image from October 15 and one that came as I waited for the full moon to rise over Marblehead harbor.  I had set up at Crocker Park and used a borrowed lens with an incredible 400mm of zoom to explore the familiar harbor.  I spotted this sailboat coming into the mouth of the harbor and captured a few images of it as its sails reflected the light of the evening sun.  Finally, I caught the boat in perfect light while sailing past the Eastern Yacht Club. The appearance of the two sails and masts intrigued me - does anyone [...]
