The Bench Under the Cherry Tree at Harris Street Cemetery

So this is the image I really wanted to capture when I came back to the Harris Street Cemetery on Sunday at sunrise.  I had photographed the cemetery and its three beautiful cherry trees at peak bloom the day before but the light was coming from the opposite direction.  That made this angle tough to capture as the interior cherry blossoms were in the shadows and the light was just all wrong. I woke at 6am having checked the forecast and noting clear blue skies were expected.  That gave me an extra hour of sleep as there was no point [...]

The Tombstone Under the Cherry Blossoms

Yesterday, I shared the first image from these incredible cherry trees at the Harris Street Cemetery.  Today, I'll share the last image taken on Sunday as I headed back to my car. I had come across this particle tombstone before and found the inscription fascinating.  As the sun had climbed up in the sky, I was able to get some great light coming off the face of the tombstone.  I chose a wide open aperture to push the beautiful colors of the cherry blossoms into a bit of a blur in the background. In case you cannot make out the [...]

Cherry Blossoms at Peak Bloom – Harris Street Cemetery

Last week I shared images of cherry blossoms taken in the Spring of 2012 and explained that cherry blossoms were forever tied to Spring in my mind after spending several years living in Washington, DC.  Over this past weekend, I asked for some help from my 'fans' on Facebook to help me find trees at peak blossom.  I was pointed to a few spots around town but one person asked if I had been to the Harris Street Cemetery yet. On Saturday, after the rain let up, I decided to check all the spots recommended to me.  I started on [...]

A Perfect Spring Day at the Eveleth School

Today's image was an easy one to pick and it has a number of different meanings. First and foremost, I'm tired of the cold and the snow.  This is the scene at Eveleth School from a beautiful (and warm) Spring day last year.  I walk my son to school here every morning and kept an eye on the trees waiting for the flowers to peak and for a nice cloud filled sky.  This was as perfect as I could have imagined and should give you hope as you walk out this morning and take your kids to school or head [...]

Spring Comes to Hammond Park

Repeat after me 'Two More Months'... I don't know about you but this Winter is feeling very loooong after the weekend snow storm following a blizzard.  There was no way I was posting a snow photo today so I went back to the archive and found this photo taken on April 14, 2012.  You can't beat the view from Hammond Park when the trees start to bloom and a race takes place in the still empty harbor.  This was the first photo I captured when I raced to this spot last April.  I shared another version with a closer view [...]

Welcome to the Town of Marblehead (Spring version)

Back to a Spring photo to brighten up the past few dreary days.  In mid-April, I noticed that the cherry blossom tree on the corner of Pleasant and Maple streets had reached full bloom.  I had photographed the Welcome to the Town of Marblehead sign before highlighting the anchor in the foreground and the flowering bush on the right.  I decided to use the cherry blossom as a background with this image. What should have taken mere minutes ended up with me standing in the middle of the crosswalk (at the barrier) for over 30 minutes waiting for the right [...]

Trees Grow in Marblehead

I have been trying to find a good vantage point from which to photograph Abbot Hall on Front Street for some time.  The problem has been all of the overhead wires that crisscross that street.  Earlier this Spring, with these two trees in full bloom, I finally found the location and managed to capture this view. A bit of technical information for this one.  The image you see is a combination of two photos with focus points that vary between them.  I shot the trees in focus first and then quickly switched to Abbot hall.  I was shooting with a very long [...]

Spring in Marblehead – Flowers and Abbot Hall

From a recent trip on the Marblehead Neck comes this view of Spring flowers on Foster Street.  After photographing the sun over the expansive home on this street, I turned and noted this view of flowers with the harbor behind.  The composition was a bit tougher and involved me laying down on the grass and trying to capture the image in a contorted position.  Enjoy this and a few more views of Spring coming later in the week.

Flowers on the Neck

We had a run of perfect weather in mid April and I ventured out one day to explore flowers on the Neck.  As I drove down Foster Street, I noticed this beautiful house and the flowers that had sprung to life near the road.  I carefully setup to capture the flowers under a bring Spring sun with the house forming a great backdrop.  If you stare at this one long enough, you can just about feel that warm sun on your skin and smell the crisp Spring air.

A Spring Sail for the Jackson Cup

On April 14th, the Boston Yacht Club hosted the 14th annual invitational Jackson Cup regatta.  It was a beautiful Spring day and I couldn't pass up the chance to shoot the colorful sails in an empty harbor so I biked down to find a good vantage point.  My first stop was Hammond Park (which will soon play a major role in the Marine Aviation Centennial).  I caught the trees at just the right time and quickly composed a photo to highlight the boats passing the lighthouse inside our harbor with a perfect example of Spring's beauty.  Enjoy this image on [...]
