The 12:30 Show at the Barnacle

You can always count on a good show at the Barnacle with every Nor'Easter that comes through town and yesterday's showing was no different. The restaurant was full for this well timed 12:30 show and I joined the others gathered to watch the beauty of the ocean's waves crashing against the restaurant. This wasn't the highest waves I've seen from this spot but the clearing skies made for some great light on those awesome waves.

Oceanside at Front Street

That was an incredible storm with the power to uproot enormous trees and cause major infrastructure issues with lost power and damage along the coast. In the aftermath of the storm, there was beauty to be found in the raw power of the ocean and I set out before the noon high tide to capture scenes around Marblehead. I began the day shooting waves exploding behind and above the lamp posts along the causeway then made my way to Hammond Park, the Landing, Front Street before exploring Greystone and finally Surf Street. By the time I returned home, I had [...]

Lightning Strikes Marblehead Light

So the title above 'lightning strikes Marblehead Light' may be a bit of creative license but when I saw this bolt and the image on the back of my camera's monitor, I just about lost my mind.  A bit about the shot: What an incredible lightning storm we just had pass through town!  I saw the sky darken as we finished dinner and ran out the door when I saw the radar image of the storm.  I quickly decided that Front Street offered me the best view and wondered if I might get a lucky shot of a lightning strike [...]

Ocean Meets the Barnacle

As a Nor'Easter pounds the coast, I am reminded of this image captured in March 2013 during another storm that hit Marblehead.  I ventured out to Lovis Cove at high tide hoping to capture the results from when the ocean meets the Barnacle.  Sure enough, waves crashed against the building sending the surf high up in the air.  I'll be heading out at high tide this morning to see if I can capture new images of the angry ocean.

Fighting the Current

This seemed like a good image to end the week on with rain in the forecast and with the crisp Fall air signaling the coming close of boating season.  As an offshore storm sent crashing waves into Marblehead beaches and Castle Rock, the harbor offered some protection for boats moored within its borders.  However, this one wooden sailboat perched near the mouth of the harbor was definitely fighting the current as whitecaps formed clear across the harbor. I'm not sure who owns this boat or even what class or type it might be but its clean lines and beautiful wooden [...]

Off Duty at Devereux Beach

From September 5th and my third trip to Devereux Beach to capture images of incredible waves.  A lifeguard chair stands empty as huges waves come ashore meaning guards are off duty at Devereux Beach. *Photos will continue but descriptions may be sparse until Sept 28 as I am studying for the Allergy and Immunology Board exam which we need to take every 10 years

Watching the Waves Roll In

By the time all was said and done on Labor Day, I had visited Devereux Beach three separate times and captured wildly different images with each visit.  On this occasion, I had stopped in near high tide before heading to Castle Rock and found that most of the surfers had departed.  Instead of shooting people in the water, I tried to find interesting compositions of people watching the waves roll in to shore. As I ducked under the causeway to shoot waves crashing against the rocks, I looked up and saw feet dangling overhead.  I quickly recomposed this shot to [...]

Storm in the Harbor

After capturing images of surfers at Devereux Beach and then crossing over the causeway to shoot crashing waves at Crocker Park, I circled around Marblehead Neck to the secret beach on Cove Lane to view the storm in the harbor.  I noted a lone sailboat fighting against the wind and waves and then turned toward the main part of the harbor to find boats being lifted up on whitecaps as their ropes pulled taut against moorings. This shot captured one boat being lifted in the air at the crest of a small wave as the Old North Church and houses [...]

Watching the Storm at Castle Rock

With every storm, I try to make it out to Castle Rock near high tide to watch the incredible power of Mother Nature as waves crash into the shoreline and explode in plumes of white.  With a perfect vantage point on the rock and views North and South, there really is no better place in all of Massachusetts for watching a storm roll in than Castle Rock in Marblehead. Here are three images captured at high tide as Hermine churned offshore. If you haven't seen the video yet, you can experience the storm by clicking below.   [...]
