Boston under the Sunset Sky

I don't always remember to capture the view of the Boston skyline from this spot along Ocean Avenue (keep to the right just after crossing the causeway onto the Neck). I had come to this spot just before sunset trying to decide which way the clouds were moving relative to the setting sun.  I composed this image of Boston under the sunset sky and chose to include just enough of the foreground to frame the image.  As it turned out, this was the peak of sunset but I continued on around the Neck and down Foster for tomorrow's image.

Yellow Orange Glow

And here is the image captured on Saturday, June 4th exactly 15 minutes before yesterday's shot of pink clouds behind Abbot. This was the view as the yellow orange glow of sunset with an oncoming thunderstorm reached near peak (peak was 2 minutes later in that wide shot I shared earlier in the week). The composition here is nearly identical to that captured a short time later and was unintentionally so. This one was carefully composed and shot on a tripod while the other was shot handheld as I literally ran to this spot before the pink clouds shifted away [...]

Pink Clouds over Abbot Hall

On Saturday, after heading down the walkway to the float to capture purple rain over the harbor, I made my way back up in under two minutes to capture the pink clouds over Abbot Hall. The departing storm was reflecting the colors of the setting sun and the arc of clouds created an interesting dramatic look to the early June sky. This is a nearly identical composition to one I'll share tomorrow captured 15 minutes earlier when the sky was still exploring in that yellow orange glow. I'm curious which you will prefer.

Purple Rain over the Harbor

Shortly after yesterday's image of that orange sky over Crocker, the thunderstorm arrived and a mix of wind and rain pelted the few people at Crocker Park. I stood under the gazebo and watched the sky, then radar, hoping the storm would move fast enough to allow me to capture a rainbow over the Neck. The storm ended up building then stalling so I missed the chance for a rainbow but made sure to run out as the rain slowed to take in the view of purple rain over the harbor. The rain was actually to my left over the [...]

Orange Sky over Crocker

On Saturday  night, I had headed to Crocker Park ahead of a thunderstorm hoping for a rainbow. I arrived to find an incredible orange sky had developed as the last light of sunset lit up the clouds of an oncoming storm. I shared a tighter shot of Abbot Hall and its surrounding houses on Sunday but this was the grand view as seen from near the walkway leading to the float (not in quite yet). While the prior shot was taken at 105mm, this one was at 27mm to allow me to capture the entirety of that orange sky with [...]

Last Night at Crocker

What incredible light we had last night at Crocker park ahead of that sunset rain storm that washed over Marblehead! (and a first test of my new email system) I was alerted to incoming rain at 7:30pm last night and, seeing how it was potentially timed with sunset, I figured there was a decent chance of capturing my first rainbow of the season. I decided to drive out to Crocker Park to give me options of shooting back towards the sunset light and then pivot to get a possible rainbow over the harbor. As the rain approached and the sun [...]

Ready for the Season

Back to the sunset on March 18th and my first stop along Foster Street. I had shot toward Abbot and the lighthouse but decided to try this composition of the two cranes at the end of the pier just as the sun dipped under a cloud. I closed the aperture as small as it would go and managed to pull out a few sun rays against the cloud while also maximizing focus throughout the frame.  The two cranes seem ready for the season and to start filling Marblehead Harbor with boats. Won't be long now before those moorings fill up...

Adrift

For this being my first (and likely only) outing in March, the night of March 18th proved to be quite productive with 7 keepers captured between Foster Street and Corinthian Lane. When I first arrived at Corinthian Lane, I was immediately drawn to this small boat. I titled this 'adrift' but the boat was tied up securely and not very far from the shore at low tide. I used a telephoto lens to help compress the expanse of harbor between the boat and Abbot Hall in the distance. I also chose a slightly more open aperture of f/5.6 to give [...]

A Beautiful Sunset on an Awful Day

Many of those who see these images have ties to Marblehead but no longer reside within its 4.4 square miles. As such the title of today's post may sound odd or be assumed to be about me...it's not. A tragic car accident took the life of a Marblehead High School senior on March 18th and the community has been rocked by the loss. As any father would, I felt the news as a gut punch. After a long day, I felt the need to get out and made my way across that causeway and onto the Neck having no plan [...]

Winter Sunsets at Chandler Hovey Park

Remember that spring-like day on Saturday when the ice/snow had finally melted and temps broke 60? This was the view of the winter sunset at Chandler Hovey Park where I headed to enjoy the last light of an unusually warm winter day. Little did I know I would spend the following day driving (and occasionally sliding) on streets around town capturing freshly falling snow.
