The Road to Tedesco

In early April 2014, I received my modified Canon 50D from a shop specializing in infrared photography.  They added a filter in front of the camera's sensor that only let infrared light in.  As green objects reflect a lot of infrared and blue absorbs a significant amount, a black and white infrared image features dark black skies and brilliant white grass and foliage. With this in mind, my very first stop was the Tedesco Country Club.  I stopped here and found a composition with the road to Tedesco passing a beautiful crop of trees.  The end result was exactly what [...]

Foliage at Sunset from Leggs Hill

All images shared this week have come from two very different outings on Sunday, November 2nd.  Monday's came during the first snow of the season but, what followed, was an incredible sunset which always seems to follow such a storm. I shared an image yesterday from Forest River which had been my first destination when the light show began.  Immediately after capturing that image, I drove back up Leggs Hill Road to the parking lot of the YMCA.  Once there, I found that the young trees were still holding onto their leaves which had changed to a bright orange hue.  I [...]

Fall in Marblehead – Crowninshield Road

All of this week's images were captured over a few hours span on Sunday morning.  I had started out along Beacon Street hoping for a solid dawn and sunrise and having that wish fulfilled (more of those images next week). As the sun rose above the horizon, it began to light up the trees along Crowninshield Road and, in particular, one tree showing off its Fall colors.  With the expansive view of Doliber Cove and the orange color of this one tree lit up by the morning sun, the scene seemed to sum up Fall in Marblehead quite well.

Infrared Marblehead – Along the Rail Trail

I haven't shared an infrared black and white image of Marblehead in some time and figured it would be a nice change of pace from the recent sunsets. In mid-June I went out on a bike ride around town with my modified infrared camera and found perfect conditions for capturing infrared images of Marblehead.  This image comes from the start of the bike ride when I found a great tree trunk bent at a funny angle along the Rail Trail.  The beauty of infrared is found when capturing foliage and seeing the leaves take center stage with brilliant whites.  The [...]

Three Cherry Blossoms in Marblehead

Yesterday, I shared an image of the far right cherry blossom in full bloom at Harris Street cemetery and mentioned that this is my favorite crop of cherry blossoms in Marblehead.  After capturing that image, I sought out some new compositions that I had not captured the previous year.  This panorama is the result of five images taken in vertical orientation and stitched together.  The final image offers a wonderful perspective on the cherry blossoms and their location in the cemetery as well as offering unrivaled resolution. I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful sky to highlight the beauty [...]

Sand Trap in the Snow – Tedesco Country Club

This has been a long Winter with all too frequent snow storms and plenty of sub-freezing temperatures to go along with them. That being said, there is something incredibly beautiful about a coating of freshly fallen snow. On Saturday, February 15, immediately after dropping off my son at the Tedesco parking lot for the YMCA snowboarding clinic, I headed across the street to capture the view you see before you. Snow had fallen the night before and a nice sunrise was developing as I found this composition near Tedesco Street. I was surprised to see that the sand trap had [...]

A Canopy of Snow on Glendale Road

I have wanted to capture the classic New England scene of a canopy of trees contrasted with fresh fallen snow for years now. I had spotted this great tree lined street only blocks from my house on Glendale Road several years ago but the conditions hadn't come together until the snowfall of February 5th. As I mentioned in yesterday's post, the snow was falling too heavily during the day to properly capture these scenes and so I had gone out early the morning of Thursday, February 6. I started off at Fort Sewall and was coming home when I glanced [...]
