Marblehead Fireworks and Harbor Illumination

As soon as last night's spectacular fireworks show over Marblehead harbor ended, I rushed home and eagerly looked through images trying to find the biggest and best timed explosion of color.  I was thrilled to find a twin explosion with a leading tail and focused on that image to share with all of you.  The image clearly resonated with many current and former 'Headers as it was well received by those on my various social media pages. It was only today after finishing a day of work that I was able to look more carefully at the images I captured last [...]

Fireworks over Marblehead Harbor

Since moving to Marblehead in 2008, I've gone out each year to capture the incredible fireworks show put on each Fourth of July.  At this point, I've shot from Chandler Hovey Park, Fort Sewall, Little Harbor, Crocker Park and the cupola of a private residence.  This year, I wanted to explore the area between Crocker Park and the causeway.  As we became members of the Dolphin Yacht Club this season, I thought that might offer the perfect vantage point for capturing fireworks over Marblehead harbor. I arrived at the yacht club early enough to capture a great sunset and then [...]

Old Town House

The Old Town House was built in 1727 and served as the original town hall for the town of Marblehead, Massachusetts.  The building is constructed in a Georgian style and was designed by the architect Nathan Bowen.  The yellow building with its wood clapboard siding on a granite foundation stands in the middle of Washington Street with traffic circling around it. History of the Old Town House   Though the main floor was originally used as the town hall, it's lower level was used as a market initially.  When Abbot Hall was constructed in 1876, it assumed the role of town [...]

Horribles Parade

Since moving to Marblehead in May 2008, I've made it a point to head down to Pleasant Street every July 4th at 10am for the Marblehead Horribles Parade.  We didn't know what to expect that first year but, once the candy started flying, my kids were hooked.  Between that and the parade of kids dressed up in one of three categories - Current Events, Historical or Original (that covers just about everything) - the parade has become a perfect way to celebrate the Fourth.  This is one of the many Marblehead Traditions that make this coastal New England town so [...]

Old Town House Bathed in Gold

The Marblehead Festival of Arts is upon us and two of my prints are hanging up at the Old Town House this weekend.  I was honored to receive an Honorable Mention award for 'Lunar Eclipse and Abbot Hall'.  As in years past, the public gets to vote of their favorite image which is then awarded the Peoples Choice Award.  I would greatly appreciate your vote if you make it through the photography exhibit on Friday (2-7pm), Saturday (10-5pm) or Sunday (12-5pm). Today's image comes from that same sunset and incredible light show of last Thursday night.  In fact, this was [...]

Marblehead Concerts at Crocker Park

One of the best parts of the annual Marblehead Festival of Arts is the concert series that takes place each day in Crocker Park.  Beginning Friday before sunset, this year's Concerts at Crocker Park kicks off with jazz.  The music continues day and night throughout the Fourth of July weekend. Last year, I was fortunate to be at Crocker Park enjoying the music with my family when the sky exploded in a brilliant pink and purple sunset.  I captured familiar compositions including the view of Abbot Hall from the park but also climbed up behind the stage to photograph the band during [...]

Marblehead Artisans Marketplace is this Weekend

I'm pleased to announce that I will be participating in the Marblehead Artisans Marketplace this weekend for the second time in as many years.  The Artisans Marketplace is located on the grounds of Abbot Hall and will take place on Saturday and Sunday during the Marblehead Festival of Arts. As I did last year, I will have a collection of prints on display as well as signed books and my 16-month 2017 calendar available for purchase.  If you have wondered what my canvas or metal prints look like or just need to get a sense of whether a 16x20 or [...]

Patriotism on State Street

One hour after capturing yesterday's view of Riverhead Beach from the causeway, I found myself walking down State Street which was bordered on both sides by incredible cloud formations.  I started off near Maddie's shooting up toward Washington Street as the sun set and set the sky ablaze in color.  As the sunset settled, I moved up the street looking for other views. I had noted an American flag on display on a house across the street and was thrilled when I found this one near the top of State Street.  I set up this composition to include the two [...]

Golden Water of Riverhead Beach

On Thursday, June 23rd, my wife, daughter and I took our new dog to walk the causeway.  While they ate ice cream from Lime Rickeys, I held a leash in one hand and my camera in the other.  It wasn't long before the sun dipped below a cluster of clouds and began to spill its light painting the water of Riverhead Beach in a golden hue. I quickly handed off the leash and crossed the causeway to get a better vantage point.  I tried to include as much sky as the lens would allow while still capturing the golden water [...]

State Street at Sunset

Five years ago, I captured an incredible sunset from this exact spot on State Street.  The sky exploded in bright pink colors that bathed the classic houses on this street and made the entire street come to life.  Ever since then, I've tried to recreate that image with varying levels of success. On Wednesday night, I headed out in hopes of capturing one of the many great sunsets that had been taking place in town over the past few weeks.  As luck would have it, clouds ended up blocking much of the sunlight and I ended up packing up without [...]
