Racing in Marblehead Harbor

With the perfect weather that we've been having, I figured some of my readers might like to see an image of sailboats in the waters of Marblehead.  Today's shot comes from April 23rd and a view of sailboats participating in the Jackson Cup.  This is by far my favorite event of the season as the moorings in the harbor remain empty for the most part allowing the boats to pass in front of several Marblehead landmarks. I've shared one image from the races on this particular afternoon with the boats crossing in front of Abbot Hall.  I watched the sailboats [...]

Red Sky at Night behind Old North Church

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had arrived at Castle Rock with some time to spare before moonrise and so I walked up to Corinthian Lane and then quickly back towards Nashua Avenue looking for a new angle from which to capture the sunset.  The clouds over the mainland were diffusing the sun's light as it descended toward the horizon and imparting a red glow to the sky.  As the old adage goes, red sky at night, sailors delight. I started off with a horizontal composition but found that I really wanted to focus on Old North Church in [...]

Strawberry Moon on the Summer Solstice – Castle Rock, Marblehead

The full Strawberry moon rose tonight just as we reached the Summer solstice - a phenomenon that occurs approximately every 50 years.  With that knowledge in mind and clear conditions forecast, I planned out spots from which to shoot the full moonrise.  After much deliberation, I decided on Castle Rock as my destination and hoped to shoot the moon against the familiar rocky face of the outcropping. I reached Castle Rock 30 minutes early and used the time to walk over to Nashua Avenue to watch the sunset.  I was treated to some nice color and a composition including Old [...]

Pink Sky over Riverhead Beach

Last night, I headed out just before sunset on a bit of a hunch and with a particular destination in mind.  I had met someone recently who inquired about my shooting from her home of 24 years that they had recently sold.  After discussing a bit about the property, I promised I would do my best to capture an image with which to remember this house with a view of Marblehead Harbor. I ended up shooting a few scenes from the cupola of her home while we talked and kept my eye on a particular cloud that shifted just out of [...]

Ready to Fire at the Eastern Yacht Club

Today's image seemed a fitting way to end the week and comes from a mid-May photoshoot that ended at the Eastern Yacht Club.  I had gone out on this evening chasing the clouds you see but was disappointed as they solidified before sunset blocking any light from adding color to the sunset sky.  With a few minutes to spare, I raced over to the EYC and captured this image of its cannon ready to fire under a darkening sky. Enjoy the weekend and the coming warm weather.  Summer has definitely arrived in Marblehead!

Under the Clouds in Marblehead Harbor

The past few days have featured perfect temperatures in the upper 70s, dry conditions and cumulous clouds passing over Marblehead.  The combination has led me to venture out on a number of occasions to shoot the cloud filled sky and, on this day, brought me to State Street Landing and its view of the harbor. I walked down to the dock floating on the water so that I could maximize the reflections in the relatively still waters of the harbor.  The sight of boats filling their moorings added to the feel of Summer on this picture perfect afternoon under the [...]

Clouds on Fire over Marblehead Harbor

The final image from Friday night's outing at Riverhead Beach and the peak of sunset light over Marblehead Harbor.  I hadn't moved between the three images shared this week except to adjust the focal length of the camera's lens and slightly adjust the camera on the tripod's ballhead to change compositions. It never ceases to amaze me just how much the light will change in a matter of minutes and such was the case on this night as the earlier golden light gave way to a pink/orange/red mix that reflected off and seemed to set the clouds on fire.  The [...]

Golden Light Strikes Abbot Hall

Less than a minute after yesterday's image of blue skies and streaking clouds, I captured this shot of boats in Marblehead harbor and golden light striking Abbot Hall.  I had gone from the widest view on my zoom lens for yesterday's image to its most telephoto for this one. The difference from a 24mm to this 105mm view was like night and day allowing me to capture the golden light in the early evening sky lighting up Abbot Hall's clock face and weathervane. One more image from this evening outing coming tomorrow - stay tuned.

Riverhead Beach – Choppy Water Reflecting a Cloudy Sky

On Friday night, I returned home from work and ate dinner with my family before my wife and daughter headed off to her last soccer practice.  My son and I were home with the new puppy and I kept looking up at the sky as clouds broke up and promised a nice sunset.  With my wife on her way home, I left the puppy in my son's care and headed off toward the causeway. I wasn't sure where I would shoot from as I crossed the causeway and looked to my left and behind me.  On a whim, I parked [...]

Marblehead Harbor is Open for the Season

After capturing images at Chandler Hovey Park, I drove across the causeway and then through town trying to find a spot from which I could capture the cumulous clouds over Marblehead harbor.  I made my way into historic downtown and then down State Street to the Landing. Once there, I headed down to one of the docks and began composing shots but wasn't thrilled with the results. I had seen the large Open sign and the American flag above it on the dock that serves as a gas station before but never tried to walk down to that spot.  With [...]
