Sunset Light

In order to see some great sunset light, I had to go back to May in the 'to be posted' archive for this shot captured on May 16th from the Pleon Yacht Club.  The setup for sunset was good with nice cloud cover but I needed a break near the horizon for the sunset light to shine through and, sure enough, at 7:47pm, the sun dipped below the clouds and created a perfect glow that reflected over a small boat in the harbor. It's funny now to see all of these empty moorings that are now completely filled with boats. [...]

Lucky, Bella and Ruddy Duck

I haven't shared a black and white image in quite some time and Friday night's foggy evening seemed perfectly suited for that treatment. From my spot at Crocker Park, I had a few compositions open to me but this one pointing across the harbor offered the best view of the Neck enveloped in fog. This is a slightly tighter composition than yesterday's shot and the fog has shifted higher to reveal the houses along the Neck. I got lazy and chose the title based on the three boats clearly visible - Lucky, Bella and Ruddy Duck

Foggy Sunset over the Harbor

With all the rain that we have been experiencing this month, I have found little opportunity (or desire) to go out and shoot. I was feeling that way on Friday night too but as the fog rolled in just before sunset, I thought there might be a chance for some nice views of the harbor. I drove down Lee Street but couldn't find anywhere to park until I reached The Landing and then walked up towards Crocker Park from there. Sure enough, there was fog to be found in my views of the harbor and, thankfully, the fog seemed to [...]

Old Glory over Little Harbor

I wasn't sure where to go on the Fourth of July...  I had a hunch that private fireworks would be fired off around town as the official show had been cancelled but no idea where. I was going to set up along the Neck and watch but then thought better of that and headed to Beacon Street and the Little Harbor Lobster Company. I hadn't shot the American flag hanging from the crane belonging to CW Hood Yachts on its own before. When I arrived the flag wasn't moving very much but, as sunset approached, the wind picked up and [...]

Uncle Sid and the Horribles Parade

After a one year hiatus and thanks to the National Grand Bank, the annual Horribles Parade was back on the Fourth of July. I used to bring my kids to this every year and they would scamper for thrown candy. They may have aged out of the tradition but I certainly haven't... As has been tradition, Uncle Sid led the parade with music and a patriotic outfit. There is a video on my IG and FB accounts from the parade which I had shared live and then saved to those social accounts if you want a live view of the [...]

Between the Raindrops

While this year's Fourth of July weekend wasn't the same as those in the past with cold, wet conditions, fewer exhibits, artisans and traffic for the Festival and the lack of fireworks, it still felt really nice to have some of our traditional Independence Day/weekend activities return after the past year. I walked around on Saturday and ran into several people before visiting Abbot Hall and Old Town House to view the exhibits. Then on Sunday, we had plans to attend the Dolphin Yacht Club's cookout but the weather delayed the start.  Since we were already in the car, we [...]

Nature’s Fireworks

In lieu of this year's harbor illumination and show, I thought I would share this image from a few days ago when a storm approached and put mother nature's fireworks on full display. I had gone out earlier to Fort Beach and captured a bolt of lightning from a departing storm as well as a nice rainbow. As I checked radar, I found a very active storm approaching to the south so I headed back out. Given the track of the storm, I crossed the causeway and set up at the small beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. I captured a [...]

Rainbow after the Storm

Not even 10 minutes after capturing the bolt of lightning from Fort Beach, the sun broke through the clouds and lit up water vapor to create a beautiful rainbow after the storm. I went with a wider composition to keep the trees at Fort Sewall and the boats at Fort Beach in the frame while managing to catch a nice reflection of the rainbow in the water. The dramatic sky was a nice bonus as was that deep blue sky near Marblehead Light. Make sure you check in Sunday morning for "Nature's Fireworks" that I captured one hour later when [...]

Lightning Crashes

I love summer storms...especially when they happen on a Wednesday in Marblehead ;-) With the insane heat wave of the past few days predicted to break tonight, I kept watching multiple weather apps and my radar ones looking for any sign of storms and the possibility of lightning. Sure enough right around 6pm, a set of storms that had been heading to our north abruptly shifted and came over Marblehead. The radar looked too ominous to try to capture the incoming storm so I waited it out (while enjoying sushi from Gourmet Garden) and then took off as soon as [...]

Big Sky over Marblehead Harbor

While I wait for this warm air to break and usher in some interesting clouds and nice sunsets, I figured it was worth looking back to June 15th and a super-wide panorama used to take in the big sky over Marblehead harbor.  I had shared lots of images from this evening at Crocker Park last week and mentioned that I had swapped lenses as the light changed. I also shared one panorama of the harbor at 24mm focal length which is on the wide side of normal. Ten minutes after that golden light panorama and before the purple harbor image, [...]
