In late January, I noted some kite surfers at Devereux Beach as I drove across the causeway and made a beeline for home to grab my gear in order to capture images of them jumping waves and catching air. With my new camera, I also captured some video and ended up sharing that before any stills. As it happened, storm after storm followed and I am only now sharing the first image of this surfer flying over Tinkers Island.
As the calendar inches toward April, I have been awed by how empty Marblehead harbor remains. Much of that is due to the repeated Nor'Easters that have marked the start of spring. The lack of boats made me stop at this image in my 'to be published' folder. I captured this shot from the rocky shores of Riverhead Beach on a mid-August evening. I could not have asked for better light with the incredible clouds reflecting the late light of day and spilling that light down onto the harbor. This seemed like a good one to end the week on. In late January, I headed to Devereux Beach to capture kite surfers catching air and flying through the air. Between those shots, I turned my long lens towards the ocean and tried to capture images of the waves as they first formed far from land. This is one such portrait of a wave.
This morning's image is not from the latest Nor'Easter to drop snow on Marblehead but rather the last (or third) Nor'Easter of the season. I previously shared an image of Abbot Hall captured by the drone with its clock face caked in snow. The late March sunset continued to build to this mix of a backlit Abbot Hall and wispy clouds bathed in pink. Notice the complete absence of snow from this late March day in 2016. Wish that was the case this year...
Today's photo was captured 25 minutes after yesterday's on that mild mid-March evening in 2016. We had just come off a 60 degree day when I went out to shoot the sunset and here we are facing the prospect of a fourth Nor'Easter and more snow. Spring is coming...right?
Two years ago yesterday, I headed across the causeway to Marblehead Neck on a mild mid-March evening and captured an incredibly long sunset. I haven't had the chance to share many images from that evening so I thought I would try to do that this week beginning with this start of a March sunset. The clarity across the water was incredible at 6:00pm when I started shooting.
As I flew over historic downtown Marblehead on the Wednesday morning after a blizzard, I couldn't help but stop at the intersection of Washington and Hooper to take in the view. I had an image of St Michaels steeple in mind from this intersection but, with a slight adjustment, was able to take in the Lee Mansion, St Michaels, Grace and numerous examples of classic architecture from this one spot in the sky. The blizzard conveniently ended on a Wednesday and I set an alarm to capture first light on Washington Street covered in snow. I knew from my house that the snow would like have stuck to the branches of trees and sides of houses and was not disappointed to find this scene of historic downtown laid out before me. I passed this spot earlier as I started off flying my drone up to Abbot Hall for an image of the clock face caked in snow. That was quite the mid-March storm with blizzard conditions and over a foot of snow having fallen throughout the day on Tuesday. Having seen the snow stick to everything it touched, I had a few ideas for the morning and woke before sunrise to drive downtown. The roads were well plowed but still a bit tough to drive on and there was little space to park downtown while leaving rooms for the plows to finish working.
