Childrens Island in the Smoke

Today's foggy start reminded me of the sea smoke that enveloped Marblehead Harbor a few months ago.  On December 29th, I headed down to Front Street and captured images of sea smoke in truly arctic conditions. After exploring the lighthouse and capturing images of the Eastern and Corinthian, I turned my camera towards Childrens Island to find it surrounded by smoke.

Marblehead High School Sailing on a Spring Day

On Sunday, I had to drop off my son at a friend's house on the Neck. At the last minute, I grabbed my camera with the longest lens I had in the hopes that frostbite sailing might have returned to Marblehead Harbor.  With seemingly endless Nor'Easters and otherwise bad conditions, I hadn't had a chance to photograph the sailboats inside the harbor racing in front of familiar locations. As luck would have it, I found a fleet race was taking place and the conditions were picture perfect with bright sun overhead, partly cloudy skies behind Abbot Hall and an otherwise [...]

Foggy Morning at Redd’s Pond

This Wednesday in Marblehead began with thick fog and I decided to explore a few favorite locations after dropping the kids at school. My first stop was Redd's Pond where the thick fog added a sense of isolation and calm - as though this little red house existed independently of neighbors. Standing across the water and composing this image on a foggy morning at Redd's Pond made for a nice start to the day.

The Road Curves

As small as Marblehead is, it still amazes me when I notice small scenes that seem like they belong somewhere else rather than in this New England town. This black and white image of the canopy of snow covered trees was captured on the same day as yesterday's shot of Old Town House. I had driven up towards Beacon Street after exploring downtown Marblehead and parked my car facing this section where the road curves and climbs a small hill under a canopy of trees. The scene would be as likely in Vermont or Colorado as steps away from Grace [...]

Snowy Branches over Old Town House

With snow falling yesterday, I figured the window for sharing images of snow was extended for just a bit longer. Today's image wasn't taken during the April snowfall but rather on December 10th - back when snow was something to be admired. I had driven to downtown Marblehead after a picture perfect snow fall created snowy branches throughout the town. I parked in the small lot across from Old Town House and took note of these snow lined branches perfectly framing this view of Washington Street.

Cherry Blossoms in Infrared

As the calendar turns to April, I have started to look past the left over snow and forward to the coming spring. In my mind, nothing says spring like cherry blossoms in full bloom and that thought brought me to this infrared image of the Harris Street Cemetery cherry blossoms from 2014. I had converted my old Canon camera to shoot infrared when I upgraded to a full frame one. The infrared modification allowed me to capture brilliant foliage that showed as bright white against light pink grass and bluish sky. For the past few years, this crop of cherry [...]

The Setting Blue Moon

With relatively warm conditions and a very reasonable time for this morning's moonset, I couldn't pass up the chance to try capturing this month's setting blue moon.  I had scouted a prime spot to be along Corinthian Lane and ran into another photographer there who had a similar idea. We set up and watches as the blue moon promptly disappeared behind the only clouds in the sky. As we watched, the bottom of the cloud lifted and I held out hope that the moon might show before disappearing behind Abbot Hall.  Sure enough at 6:40am, the first hint of the [...]

Into the Smoke

This image of a lobster boat heading into the smoke of an arctic morning seemed a perfect way to end the week. I had gone out on December 29th to capture sea smoke in the coldest conditions I had ever experienced. Before I had a chance to set up the tripod, I spotted this lobster boat making its way out of the harbor. I quickly composed this shot seconds before the boat disappeared into the sea smoke.

Frozen Marblehead Harbor

As the days (slowly) warm, I didn't want to miss the chance to share images from this arctic winter including the incredible aerial view of a frozen Marblehead harbor.  This image was captured in early January after almost two weeks of sub-20 F temperatures led to a nearly complete freeze of the harbor (at least to the BYC/Landing). It never froze enough to support weight as the harbor did in the 70s but the contrast of the iced harbor against the deep blue of the Atlantic ocean on this morning made for a compelling image.

Lantern Walk at Old Town House

In early February, I was finally able to join the Glover's Regiment for their annual lantern walk to celebrate the life of their benefactor.  I shared a video of several images narrated by the captain Seamus Daly but held onto this vertical image to share on a later date. I had arrived at Old Town House as Glover's Regiment gathered and received instructions for the lantern walk. As I shot images of them gathered in front of the familiar yellow building, I spotted a hooded woman coming near. I quickly switched to a vertical orientation and captured this shot as [...]
