The Glover Part 4 – Classrooms

By |2016-11-06T12:06:30-05:00March 9th, 2011|Categories: School|Tags: , , |

This is easily my favorite photo from my morning spent photographing the Glover school.  There is so much about this image that I still don't understand: Why a mural of a whale rowing a boat? Why is this little desk pushed up against the wall?  At the same time, you can again see signs of the age of the Glover in the huge vent to the right and the green flooring. Below is the teacher's break room.  It's a truly tiny space and, when I saw the light coming in and the half-erased words on the chalkboard, I knew that [...]

The Glover part 3 – The Boilers

By |2016-05-05T11:00:38-04:00March 2nd, 2011|Categories: School|Tags: , , |

Ever since I took a tour of the Glover school at the time of the last override vote, I had wanted to come back and shoot the boiler room.  These boilers are incredible for their sheer size and age (almost 100 years old).  As you can see, there have been modifications made over the years to try to squeeze more heat out of them by adding a blower to the front.  The scary thing is that these boilers are one bad part away from the scrap heap.  It seems that we've made it through this Winter with them keeping our [...]

The Glover part 2 – The Stairwells

By |2016-11-06T12:06:31-05:00February 28th, 2011|Categories: School|Tags: , , |

Part 2 of the 4-part series from my shoot at the Glover school.  Above and below are two of the stairwells in the Glover school.  The first struck me as half of the glass panes have been patched up and most are held in place with duct tape.  The floors show the toll of a hundred years of little feet walking up and down the stairs. Below you'll find the seal of the town of Marblehead at the top of another set of stairs.  Please click the photos to see them bigger and explore the details presented in each image. [...]

The Glover part 1 – The Cafeteria

By |2016-11-06T12:06:31-05:00February 24th, 2011|Categories: School|Tags: , , |

I had the distinct privilege and pleasure of spending some time shooting the Glover school this Wednesday.  As many of you know, the Glover was built in 1916 and houses grades 1-3.  The school's boilers have reached end-of-life and I'm informed that parts are only available from demolitions of buildings of that age in this state.  The town of Marblehead voted down a debt override exclusion to allow this building to be rebuilt by a margin of 71 votes.  I hope that these images can shed some light on the current standing of the school.  While there is an immense [...]

Keep to the Left

By |2016-11-06T12:06:31-05:00February 23rd, 2011|Categories: Landmark|Tags: , , |

This image was taken as I was exploring Abbot Hall a few weeks ago in hopes of shooting the now removed stained glass panels.  Made my way up to the balcony and was struck by the history of this location and that fading hand directing me to the left. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 10-22 lens.  6 exposure bracket.

The Skyline at Sunset

By |2016-05-05T12:45:03-04:00February 16th, 2011|Categories: Sunset|Tags: , , |

My first panorama shot posted to Wednesdays in Marblehead.  Hope this will project well on the page (it really needs to be seen big).  I was treated to this fantastic sunset on January 9th while shooting at Chandler Hovey park.  At this point in the Winter, I think I'm done with photos of snow (at least the dirty, half-melted stuff on the ground now).  I'll be reaching into the archives for this and next week but I have a great series planned soon... Sorry for the lack of posts last week - we left town in search of warm weather [...]

Planet Marblehead

By |2016-05-05T12:45:39-04:00February 2nd, 2011|Categories: Marblehead Harbor|Tags: , , , |

A warm shot for this week amidst the too-snowy Winter.  This one was taken in August aboard our old neighbor's sailboat and was a pretty standard shot of the lighthouse until I had the idea to turn it in on itself and create a little planet.  The sailboats and lighthouse lined up perfectly and the sky cooperated nicely for this effect.  It's a unique shot and hopefully brings a bit of warm memories to this cold, wet day.

From the Attic of Abbot Hall

Last week I decided to shoot the stained glass window at Abbot before it was removed for renovation.  Turns out I was a week late and will have to wait til Spring to take a picture of the restored glass.  While scouting out other shots, I befriended a caretaker of the building and was invited up to the attic for a rare view from the windows there.  We chatted for a bit as I shot out of two windows.  In this one, you can just make out the lighthouse in the harbor.  Unfortunately, the sky was a bright gray but [...]

Hockey Night at Redds Pond

By |2016-11-06T12:06:31-05:00January 19th, 2011|Categories: Landmark, Pond|Tags: , , , , , , |

A picturesque frozen pond and kids playing a pick-up game of hockey...you really can't ask for a more quintessential New England scene!  I took my kids skating for their first time on Redds earlier in the day and promptly went out to purchase my first pair of skates (no real need for those when you grow up in LA).  I returned for a few practice runs on the pond and found this pickup game in process.  Grabbed the camera and shot a few frames.  This image had a very classic, timeless feel to it so I decided to make it [...]

Goodbye YMCA

By |2016-11-06T12:06:31-05:00January 12th, 2011|Categories: Landmark|Tags: , , , , |

The 'old' YMCA was demolished this week to make room for new condominiums in town.  The Y opened in 1910 making it the oldest one on the North Shore.  It cared for a century of children in Marblehead but closed before I moved to town.  I had a chance to watch the demolition on Wednesday morning and snuck around to the side as the crew worked.  I found this still-standing door leading into the rays of light that were reflecting off the equipement and made stronger by the dust and debris in the air.  Seemed a perfect tribute to some [...]
