Island in the Fog

With Gerry Island in the news recently [Reporter Patch], it seemed an appropriate time to post this shot taken a few weeks ago.  I had wanted to return to Fort Sewall and shoot this image of Gerry Island for a while but was struggling with getting the mood just right.  The way the fog rolled in and blanketed the island on this day seemed just about perfect.  The island is layed out in this 4-shot panorama without a distracting background and seems to exist in its own world.  With the four images used to make this one photo, the detail [...]

The Carnival Comes to Town

By |2016-05-04T08:38:13-04:00May 11th, 2011|Categories: Beach|Tags: , , , , , |

Every May, the carnival takes over Devereux beach as a fundraiser for the senior class.  Without fail, rain always follows.  It was with astonishment then that I saw the clouds clear way and the sun take form over the carnival grounds.  A bit of smooth-talking got me a pass from the carnies to the top of the Super Slide and a unique vantage point from which to shoot.  Two additional shots follow below.

Spring Comes to Marblehead

Having lived in DC for some time, Spring and cherry blossoms will forever go hand-in-hand.  It was with that in mind that I sought cherry blossoms throughout Marblehead over the past week.  I was fortunate to find the tree above at peak bloom while walking down Washington Street on a foggy day. Below are shots taken under better conditions featuring more cherry blossoms with Abbot Hall and the Lee Mansion as backdrops.

The Pier at Mooring Road

By |2016-05-05T12:11:15-04:00April 27th, 2011|Categories: Long Exposure|Tags: , , , , , , |

Ever since we moved to Marblehead, I've wanted to find piers to photograph.  Unfortunately, all of them seemed to be private and inaccessible.  Last week, I drove down Bradley Road to explore that part of town and, on a whim, made a turn down Mooring Road and found this great pier.  The seas were rough and I had arrived near high tide - couldn't ask for a better sky though.  The shots of crashing waves weren't quite what I had in mind so I put on a filter to cut down the light and allow for longer exposures.  The waves [...]

Two Seconds at Grace Oliver Beach

By |2014-04-20T14:44:04-04:00April 20th, 2011|Categories: Long Exposure|Tags: , , , , , |

A recent storm coincided with the full moon which meant storm surges and high waves.  While the peak happened at 10pm, I decided to venture out the next day to see if any remnants of the storm would provide for good long exposure shots.  I got to Grace Oliver beach pretty close to high tide and was treated to impressive waves crashing almost to the sidewalk.  I used a 10-stop filter to block the light and allow for this two second exposure in the middle of the day.  The long exposure turned the waves into mist and this shot was [...]

Before These Crowded Streets – Old Town House

By |2016-11-06T12:06:30-05:00April 13th, 2011|Categories: Old Town|Tags: , , , , , , |

Only one week left until the overnight parking ban is lifted and the parked cars return.  I'm convinced a photographer came up with the ban that extends from the end-of-Fall until early-Spring!  It's a wonder to walk these streets in the early morning hours and explore them before the town stirs.  On this morning, I walked the length of Washington street to the Old North Church and wandered up and down State and Pleasant streets.  Here are the first two images of Old Town House from that walk.  The morning light was absolutely perfect on this particular day and turned [...]

The Crank Room and Abbot’s Bell

By |2016-11-06T12:06:30-05:00April 6th, 2011|Categories: Landmark|Tags: , , , |

In the eight months since this blog began, I have had a number of unique photo opportunities.  The Thursday I went up with 'the cranks' is right up near the top of those experiences.  We met in the lobby of Abbot hall and headed up an elevator then a set of ladders to the crank room.  Abbot's clock and bell are driven by two large, heavy counterweights that need to be raised once weekly in order to keep time.  It is the job of the cranks to rotate two wheels on this machine that serves to slowly raise those weights. [...]

The Supermoon Sets over Abbot Hall

By |2016-05-05T11:18:02-04:00March 30th, 2011|Categories: moon|Tags: , , , , , |

First, I want to thank everyone for the incredible response to last week's post.  There are two more shots from the rise of the supermoon over Marblehead neck and the harbor posted below. Just as I had planned out the location for the rise of the supermoon, I also charted its descent.  Turns out it would fall right next to Abbot hall the next morning.  I got up early and made my way to Chandler Hovey park setting up at its outermost point.  I watched the moon fall as the sun rose and the two met in perfect concert just [...]

The Supermoon Rises over Marblehead’s Lighthouse

By |2016-11-06T12:06:30-05:00March 23rd, 2011|Categories: moon|Tags: , , |

So the super moon rose on Saturday night marking the closest the moon has been to the Earth in 18 years.  The proximity made for an even larger full moon and the atmosphere colored the moon yellow/orange as it rose from the horizon.  I had planned out this location in advance and waited patiently for 7:17pm when the moon began its ascent.  It was moving fast and light from sunset was fading quickly so I had a few frames to capture the beauty of the moon and the light of Chandler Hovey park.  This is my favorite of the set [...]

Santa and the Transfer Station

By |2016-11-06T12:06:30-05:00March 16th, 2011|Categories: Uncategorized|Tags: , |

It's almost Spring and the snow has melted - that meant a run to the transfer station to deposit branches.  Afterwards, I noticed the surreal image of a plastic Santa above the oil drop-off station.  With the dark clouds, it seemed a perfect scene to capture.  It appears the transfer station will likely show up as another item on the upcoming town override vote so the timing of this shot (following the Glover series) worked out well. Below is an image of the office and the large smoke stack.  Not sure when that was last used... Technical: Canon 50D and [...]
