North and South from Castle Rock

By |2016-05-05T12:24:11-04:00January 5th, 2011|Categories: Marblehead Neck|Tags: , , , , , , |

These two photos were taken within five minutes of each other from the two sides of Castle Rock.  Above is the view to the South with a private beach.  Below is the view North with the rockier terrain and homes dotting the coast.  This was shot near sunset and high tide one day after the huge snowstorm that blanketed the town.  The seas were still rough from the tail end of the storm and made for some great long exposures. Technical: Both taken with Canon 50D and 17-55 EF-S lens.  Single exposures of approximately 1 1/2 seconds.

Snow at the Fort

I had a chance to walk around town this morning and was treated to some great light as I got to Fort Sewall.  I've been up here countless times but never stopped to read this sign.  Figured it would serve well as the centerpiece of this photo overlooking Marblehead harbor.

Early Morning on Washington Street

Today's post features two images from Washington Street taken in the early morning hours.  Above are the wonderful shops that line this crowded street before any parked cars could disturb this tranquil scene.  Below is the view of Pleasant Street and one of my (and my son's) favorite buildings that houses Mud Puddle toys.  Exploring Old Town in these early hours provides a very peaceful and calm feeling - I highly recommend the experience if you're willing to brave the cold and give up the extra hour of sleep....

The Christmas Tree at Abbot Hall

By |2016-12-01T21:25:44-05:00December 15th, 2010|Categories: Landmark|Tags: , , , , , , |

Happy Holidays!  The Christmas tree at Abbot Hall is lit as part of Marblehead's Christmas Walk.  I missed the actual lighting but added this to my list of shots to post on the blog.  It ended up being tough to find a time that was still enough for the lights to come out sharp and without motion artifacts.  On this day, I showed up at Abbot Hall at 3:30 and waited impatiently until the lights flickered on.  Shot this as an HDR to bring out the texture in the tree, the detail in the lights and the beauty of Abbot [...]

Old Town House

By |2016-05-05T12:46:38-04:00December 8th, 2010|Categories: Old Town|Tags: , , , , |

The parking ban went into effect over the Thanksgiving weekend and I took advantage of the empty streets early Tuesday morning to shoot the Old Town House.  I'm sure this building has been photographed thousands of times and I sought to add a slightly different perspective.  I love how the house stands on its own in its brilliant yellow coat.  The wreaths on the door add a nice festive touch. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 10-22 lens.  6 bracket exposure.

Sit for a Spell

Today's photo is another example of a place I never would have found were it not for this photography project.  I had made my way from Pleasant street down Harris and noticed gravestones to my left.  I parked and walked around only to find myself in the cemetery belonging to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead.  The site was incredible to behold with gravestones nearly on top of one another and abutting nearby houses!  I found this nicely worn bench and waited for the sun to pop through the clouds for this image. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 17-55mm.  3 exposure bracket.

State Street Sunset

By |2016-05-05T12:17:05-04:00November 24th, 2010|Categories: Sunset|Tags: , , |

I had wanted to shoot State Street for a while now and happened to drive up here after shooting on Front Street to find a brilliant pink sunset.  The biggest problem was dealing with the traffic on this busy street as the light faded.  Managed a few usable frames and this one which I really liked.  Best part of the night was meeting up with a friend and having a drink at Maddie's! I'll definitely be shooting this street again as the Winter parking ban goes into effect soon and I plan to explore the streets of Old Town in [...]

The Old Post Office

By |2016-05-05T12:10:21-04:00November 18th, 2010|Categories: Landmark|Tags: , , |

Last stop on Pleasant Street for this week.  I had passed this building countless times and always wondered what it was.  There are great details carved into it (see below) and, in retrospect, it should have been obvious that this was once a post office.  They sure don't make government buildings like they used to!  Turns out this is now a condo - I'm assuming there are great details and high ceilings to be found inside as well. Technical: Canon 50D and Ef-S 10-22 lens.  6 bracket exposure.

Pull Handle

Another from Memorial park.  While yesterday's image was a grand view of the centerpiece of the park, today's concentrates on the details.  I saw this fire alarm as I left the park and was instantly intrigued by the texture of the paint and handle.  As I continue to explore the town, I'm going to make an effort to notice the details as well.  Hope you enjoy these closer looks at Marblehead. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 10-22 lens.  6 bracket exposure.
