Between the Storms at Chandler Hovey Park

On Tuesday, June 9th, thunderstorms were predicted for Boston around 7:00pm and their trajectory looked like it might bring them just north of Marblehead.  Knowing that storms always make for dramatic light, I headed out to Chandler Hovey Park hoping for some great light.  I arrived at 7:15 and at first was disappointed with the too-thick clouds which were blotting out the sun.  That is until I looked behind me and spotted the rainbow!  I've shared one image of the rainbow already but this week will focus on five images that came afterwards. By 7:30pm, the rainbow had dissipated and I [...]

Light at the End of the Rainbow

Last night, storms were predicted to pass near Marblehead between 7 and 8pm.  Knowing that storms make for incredible light at sunset, I decided to head out after dinner and see if that might be the case on this occasion.  The clouds seemed to be coming from the direction of Boston and I therefore chose Chandler Hovey Park as my destination. I wasn't thrilled with the light when I first arrived at Chandler Hovey and stared up at Marblehead Light.  There was little definition in the clouds and they seemed too thick to allow any sun to shine through.  After [...]

The Old Oil House

Continuing the journey into the archives, this image comes from May 2011 and a foggy morning on Chandler Hovey Park.  By this time, I had photographed Marblehead Light on many occasions and this old oil house at least once before in the snow.  The added element of fog helped push Marblehead Light into the distant background and added a sense of mystery to this small brick building situated on the edge of Marblehead Neck.

Catching the Sunset at Marblehead Light

On July 21st, I headed out when dense fog descended on Marblehead and captured a number of scenes around Little Harbor and Redd's Pond.  From there, I decided to head to Chandler Hovey Park hoping for a nice sunset given the fog and building clouds. By the time the sun set, much of the fog had dissipated but some haze remained to diffuse the light of the sun.  I found a number of kids climbing the base of Marblehead Light and, rather than finding another vantage point, decided to incorporate the people in this composition. In this image, a boy's [...]

Marblehead from the Water

Nothing quite matches the view of Marblehead from the water - a fact I was reminded of during a boat tour around Children's Island put on by the YMCA.  We boarded the Hannah Glover on Saturday under perfect conditions and departed for the Children's Island orientation.  While it was great to see the back of Children's Island (I shared an image of that yesterday), I was anticipating a few new compositions on our return to shore. Thankfully, the clear blue skies present at departure had given way to a few clouds close to the horizon and one errant one that [...]

The Base of Marblehead Light

We enjoyed a perfect weekend in Marblehead these past few days with warm temperatures, occasional clouds and enough activities in town to keep everyone busy.  As Sunday evening rolled around, I decided to head out and try to photograph the sunset in part to capture this moment.  I drove across the causeway and ended up at Chandler Hovey Park as I chased the light breaking through clouds. When I arrived, I walked the park as if seeing it for the first time as I found myself needing to rethink all of my old compositions now that the skyline was punctuated [...]

Last Night at Chandler Hovey Park

For every vibrant sunrise and spectacular sunset that I share, there are an equal number of muted events such as last night at Chandler Hovey Park.  I had noted the gathering clouds from my house at around 7pm and then saw the sun start shining through breaks in the clouds.  I thought that the sky had about even odds of blowing up or fizzling out and decided to head out in hopes of the former. I drove to the causeway from which I could better evaluate the sky and became less sure of those odds.  The clouds had disappeared over [...]

Chandler Hovey Park and Children’s Island

An image from mid-February captured as I headed out in search of the full moon and ended up with a really nice winter sunset as a bonus.  I had been shooting wide angle shots encompassing the nearly empty harbor with the few working boats moored in its protective waters when I saw this composition.  I zoomed in so that Chandler Hovey Park and Marblehead Light were visible under the soft pink hues of sunset while including the whole of Children's Island just beyond. The setting sun added a brilliant warm glow to the scene and the snow served to break [...]

Dramatic Sky over Chandler Hovey Park

With three images shared so far this week all taken on the same morning of Thursday, February 6th, I figured I would add one more and make this a proper theme. Shortly after capturing Monday's image of the tree at Fort Sewall in the blue hour, I noticed the sky breaking up over Chandler Hovey Park. With the sun rising toward the horizon, light began seeping through the breaks in the clouds making for a very dramatic sky. I could not capture the immense size and power of the scene with the horizontal (or landscape) orientation I had the camera [...]
