Rainbow Lightning at Preston Beach

I just got home and can't believe what I'm looking at - rainbow lightning at Preston beach!  A bit of background on tonight's shot - I had gone out when the first storm passed just to the south of Marblehead around 6pm and was disappointed with the lack of lightning and that no rainbow appeared in its wake.  I returned home only to make a quick run to Vesuvius for dinner and thought I had settled in at home for the night. Without warning, torrential rain fell and I immediately pulled up my radar app to find an incredibly strong [...]

Flamingo Sunset over the Neck

On the Fourth of July, I had decided to set up at the Dolphin Yacht Club hoping for a new angle on the annual fireworks show.  Before the harbor illumination could begin, nature decided to put on its own show with an incredible pink sunset. I shot frame after frame as the color in the sky built to the peak you see here.  As I did, I noted a bring pink flamingo perched atop a boat waiting for the fireworks to begin.  The color and shape of the evening's colors seemed to mimic those of the bird and came together [...]

Foggy Sunset in Marblehead

This was one of the last images captured on July 5th from Chandler Hovey Park as a foggy sunset lit up the gathered fog in color and light.  I had been shooting a tighter view of this as the Town class boats passed by these much larger sailboats moored in the harbor.  Once they passed, I widened my composition to include the full height of the boats and the incredible light being cast by the setting sun diffused by the fog in our harbor. I can't count the number of times I have gone out in the evening as fog [...]

Sailing Under the Sunset

I learned long ago that fog produces my favorite atmosphere with which to capture images of Marblehead.  Two of my black and white images of foggy scenes were awarded Best of Show at the Festival of Arts a few years ago and a write up in the Reporter at the time was titled 'The Fog-tographer'.  And so, on Tuesday night when I looked out and saw hints of fog in the distance, I grabbed my camera bag and headed out toward the harbor. I found myself in dense fog as I crossed the causeway and immediately pulled over on the [...]

Pink Sky over Riverhead Beach

Last night, I headed out just before sunset on a bit of a hunch and with a particular destination in mind.  I had met someone recently who inquired about my shooting from her home of 24 years that they had recently sold.  After discussing a bit about the property, I promised I would do my best to capture an image with which to remember this house with a view of Marblehead Harbor. I ended up shooting a few scenes from the cupola of her home while we talked and kept my eye on a particular cloud that shifted just out of [...]

Clouds on Fire over Marblehead Harbor

The final image from Friday night's outing at Riverhead Beach and the peak of sunset light over Marblehead Harbor.  I hadn't moved between the three images shared this week except to adjust the focal length of the camera's lens and slightly adjust the camera on the tripod's ballhead to change compositions. It never ceases to amaze me just how much the light will change in a matter of minutes and such was the case on this night as the earlier golden light gave way to a pink/orange/red mix that reflected off and seemed to set the clouds on fire.  The [...]

Golden Light Strikes Abbot Hall

Less than a minute after yesterday's image of blue skies and streaking clouds, I captured this shot of boats in Marblehead harbor and golden light striking Abbot Hall.  I had gone from the widest view on my zoom lens for yesterday's image to its most telephoto for this one. The difference from a 24mm to this 105mm view was like night and day allowing me to capture the golden light in the early evening sky lighting up Abbot Hall's clock face and weathervane. One more image from this evening outing coming tomorrow - stay tuned.

Summer’s First Breath

My favorite aspects of Summer sunsets are their long duration and the incredible color gamut that can be seen from start to finish.  Today's image of Summer's first breath was taken 10 minutes before yesterday's wide view of deep purple colors over the harbor as seen from Parker Lane. When I arrived at this spot, I was treated to a yellow-orange sun with light radiating off the low lying clouds and bathing the harbor in orange-blue light.  The rapidly changing colors allowed me to explore many different views from this one location - each slightly different thanks to a change in hue. [...]

The First Breath of Summer

I woke this morning at 4:30am hoping to catch a nice sunrise over Marblehead Harbor with projected warm air coming to town.  Unfortunately, the warm air meant humidity and dense fog that spoiled my best laid plans.  I returned home having only taken a few frames and crawled back into bed. As the evening arrived, I headed out with my daughter to walk our new puppy and noted pink light beginning to form overhead.  I made sure he finished his business and then made a beeline for the house and my wife who agreed to finish the walk while I [...]

Foggy Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

Continuing this week's exploration of the archives brings us this image from late June 2013.  I had gone out to the Dolphin Yacht Club this evening to capture the sunset cannon being fired and ended up being witness to a beautiful pink foggy sunset. The light was incredible and the water content of the fog served to help diffuse and reflect the sunset colors.  If you look carefully, you can spot a faint rainbow that appeared overhead for a few minutes shortly after the cannon was fired.
