Abbot Hall

Abbot Hall and Historic Downtown Marblehead

Today's image came about as a lucky accident as I had another image in mind when I launched the drone over historic downtown Marblehead.  Taking care to keep vertical over the launch area and keep the drone in site the entire time, I found Abbot Hall quite literally shining below me with all of 'Old Town' spread out beyond. I could not have asked for better light and lucked out with the angle of the late Summer sun shining on the red brick facade of this beautiful building.

Harbor Tour at Sunset

In mid-July of 2013, a friend invited me onto his boat for a loop around Marblehead and a harbor tour as the sun set.  We lucked out with great light and perfect conditions for a leisurely exploration of Marblehead from the water and I came away with some of my favorite images from this one day.  In fact, there were so many opportunities for shooting that I'm still finding new images to share even four years later. Today's image comes from the last loop through Marblehead Harbor.  The sun was just setting and I found myself aiming the camera at [...]

Last Light on Abbot Hall

On August 6th, I had gone out with a particular photo in mind and was thrilled when I was able to realize it from my vantage point over Crocker Park.  As the last light faded over the harbor, I turned to walk back to the car and had actually made it all the way inside before I saw pink clouds erupt overhead.  I quickly jumped back out of the car, swapped batteries on the Phantom 4 Pro and took off again. This time, I stayed close to my car parked along Washington Street and found that Abbot Hall was perfectly [...]

Cloud Filled Sunset

What better way to start a new year of Wednesdays in Marblehead then with this cloud filled sunset over a harbor filled with boats.  Today's image was actually taken on a Tuesday evening (June 27th) as clouds filled the sky but left just enough space at the horizon for the setting sunlight to shine through and create a beautiful pink glow behind Abbot Hall.  You can also make out Grace Community Church and St. Michael's Steeple  towering over the familiar skyline. The benefit of these late sunsets is that I have plenty of time to come home after work, eat [...]

Mother Nature’s Fireworks

I couldn't post yesterday's image of fireworks without immediately recalling the display of Mother Nature's fireworks on June 27th.  I shared an incredible image of multiple bolts as soon as I came home but had a few more captures from that night that I had wanted to share as well. This was the last shot I took on that evening.  The sun had long since set and my exposure time was getting longer.  At this point I had to up the camera ISO to 1600 to keep a reasonable shutter speed of 1.3 seconds. Thankfully, it was calm that night [...]

Lightning Storm over Marblehead Harbor

What an incredible night and an epic lightning storm over Marblehead Harbor.  I left the house a little after 7pm hoping to capture lightning from Chandler Hovey park but kept missing bolts during the first storm.  As the rain pelted the Neck, I waited in my car and saw another storm heading our way on the radar. As I waited, I noted pink hues forming near the horizon and moved to a favorite spot on Corinthian Lane from where I captured a very nice sunset over the harbor.  Just as the sunset light faded, the real show began and I [...]

Liquid Gold in Marblehead Harbor

Well, this Summer sure is off to a great start!  I went out to grab dinner at Mino's while my wife and kids were at a friend's house and then drove across the causeway with an eye to the sky.  Clouds had been forming and breaking since I got home and there looked to be a clearing near the horizon that slowly great larger as the sun set. I started off at Corinthian Lane, then at Peabody Lane before deciding to shoot from Harvard Street tonight.  I set up the camera on a tripod and then ran to the car [...]

Marblehead Sunset – 1 if by Land, 2 if by Air

On Saturday night, I once again chased a promising sunset across the causeway to Marblehead Neck and ended up on Parker Lane.  From there I set up my 'real' camera at the top of the stairs and also decided to fly my drone overhead as I wondered which might offer the better composition.  I ended up taking two different shots within three minutes of each other and still can't decide which view I prefer. The shot of this Marblehead Sunset by land has much better color and detail in the sky and the choice of a longer effective focal length [...]

Golden Water in Marblehead Harbor

Last weekend, I decided to head out as sunset approached hoping for a break in the clouds to help light up Marblehead harbor.  As luck would have it, this was one of three sunsets in the past few weeks that have held great promise but fizzled in the end.  However, before the light faded, I composed this tight shot of Abbot Hall rising above boats on their mooring with the last light of sunset creating the effect of golden water in Marblehead harbor. For every great sunset capture there are easily a dozen outings that don't quite work out.  I [...]

Jackson Cup Racing in Marblehead Harbor

The Jackson Cup took place last weekend and I decided to capture it from an aerial perspective rather than my prior attempts from Hammond Park and the Pleon/Eastern yacht clubs.  I was so thrilled with the video I captured that day that I promptly forgot about the still images. This was my favorite image of Jackson Cup racing in Marblehead harbor from last Sunday.  The boats were racing deeper in the harbor than they had been previously and they had broken up into a linear formation.  In this way, I was able to pull back a bit and capture the [...]
