Spring in Marblehead – Cherry Blossoms on Washington Street

We were away last week during the school vacation having decided to drive down to Washington, DC and explore the city where we lived for several years before moving to Marblehead.  As we drove down, the trees filled in and flowers began to appear on trees.  DC itself was in full Spring bloom and pollen literally caked our car within a few days. On our return, I drove around town looking for signs of Spring in Marblehead.  I was disappointed to find my favorite patch of cherry blossoms had not started to bloom but found this tree along Washington Street [...]

First One into the Harbor

After the past two days of perfect weather, I can't be the only waiting eagerly awaiting those warm Summer days.  I decided to look through my archive of 'to be posted' images to find ones taken in April and instantly settled on this shot for today's post. On April 25, 2015, I had gone out near sunset on an equally warm night and found a single sailboat already moored in the waters.  Its positioning was perfect from this angle on Parker Lane and it appeared to be the 'first one in the harbor' - or at least this part of [...]

Abbot Hall towering over Front Street

After exploring the harbor, I turned around and flew across Crocker Park to Front Street and took in this view of Abbot Hall from 120 feet above the ground.  The sun was momentarily shaded by thin clouds and I took advantage of the softened sunset light to capture this image of Abbot Hall towering over Front Street with its historic homes having stood the test of time for hundreds of years. If you look to the left of Abbot Hall, you can clearly see the familiar silhouette of the Boston skyline.  One aspect of exploring these aerial views of Marblehead that [...]

Old Town Sunset – Aerial Panorama of historic downtown Marblehead

On Wednesdays, March 29th, the dense clouds covering Marblehead for most of the day finally began to break as the day neared its end.  I hadn't flown my Phantom 4 Pro in a few weeks due to rain, clouds and otherwise terrible lighting.  When I finally made it up in the air, I knew the lighting on this night was going to be pretty special and ended up with a spectacular view of an Old Town sunset. I explored a few vantage points as I flew over Marblehead and fought the building wind as I chased the light.  I found [...]

Abbot and the BYC

Today's image comes from November 14th and an attempt at capturing a supermoon setting behind Abbot Hall.  Before the moon had dipped low enough in the pre-dawn sky, I found this composition of Abbot Hall lit by its spotlights standing over houses and the BYC with its red and green lights aimed at Marblehead Harbor. The moon entered this scene 10 minutes later but I decided to switch to a horizontal view at that point thus removing the BYC from the frame.  The light on Abbot had also dimmed in that short interval making this shot all the more interesting for [...]

The Neverending Sunset – Abbot Hall Streaked with Light

This is another image from the incredible sunset of February 18th.  I mentioned previously that the sunset seemed to last forever and so, as a child of the 80's, I couldn't help but title it the Neverending Sunset.  At this point, the light had left the clouds overhead and become concentrated near the horizon.  I zoomed in and composed this image to include Abbot Hall with streaks of light overhead.

Rime Ice at the Corinthian

Last Valentine's Day was the coldest of the entire Winter and resulted in incredible sea smoke conditions within Marblehead Harbor.  I captured numerous scenes that morning and ended up at the Corinthian just before 8am where I found rime ice had formed over the rocks near the base of the yacht club. I composed this image to include the rime ice in the foreground, sea smoke over the water (which had turned into confluent fog at that point) and Abbot Hall in the distance.  Thankfully, this Valentine's Day was much warmer than the one in 2016.

Top 10 of 2016 – #1 – Light Dawns on Marblehead

So this is a first - my favorite image of 2016 is a brand new one that I am sharing in the countdown for the first time.  On the morning of Wednesday December 14th, I headed out of the house eager to capture aerial images of Marblehead with my new Phantom drone.  I had purchased the flying camera a week earlier and was just starting to get the hang of it but had not yet been able to shoot under great light. On this morning, the conditions seemed promising and I headed out towards Abbot Hall.  I brought the phantom [...]

Top 10 of 2016 – #6 – Goodnight Moon

Another very recent image that immediately cemented a place in my top 10 images of 2016 was this one of the supermoon and Abbot Hall captured on November 14th.  I had three opportunities to capture the historically large supermoon (beaver moon) with a moonrise over Chandler Hovey Park and a moonset against Abbot Hall.  The most challenging one took place on Monday, November 14th with the moonrise.  I had scouted out this location ahead of time but wasn't sure if the trajectory of the moon would work with the very small angle I had to work with.  To add an extra [...]

Top 10 of 2016 – #9 – Clear View Across the Harbor

Today's image was taken on March 18 and shot up to #9 on my Top 10 of 2016 list for its perfect sky and incredible clarity.  I went out on this evening chasing the textured sky and hoping for a strong sunset but was struck by the clarify of the houses lining Marblehead Harbor when viewed from across the water at the Pleon pier.
