Watching the Boats Pass By

I didn't get a chance to shoot the Halloween Race this year but happened upon this image in my 'to be published' folder and figured it would make for a good start to the day. I shot the race in October 2018 from along Foster Street and mostly tried capturing the boats with their colorful sails as they criss-crossed the harbor. When I spotted two men on a float talking and then stopping to watch the boats pass by, I quickly recomposed and included them in the final shot. Instead of a two layered image with boats against the backdrop [...]

First Snow of the Season

Remember how I was lamenting Thursday's mediocre sunrise in this morning's post? Tonight's sunset after the first snow of the season more than made up for that morning! I arrived home after work and grabbed my wife and kids to drive down Pleasant Street and view Tom Saltsman's latest Halloween masterpiece...King Kong. After that we headed home and I quickly turned around to drive across the neck as I had spotted a small opening in the cloud cover near the horizon. I arrived on Foster Street and, sure enough, sunset light had snuck through and lit up the clouds. The [...]

Ring Around the Neck – Parker Lane

I had plans to share more images from this late September afternoon and a 'ring around the Neck' hitting some of my favorite spots but other outings kept getting in the way... On the same day that I visited Chandler Hovey for that 'sit for a spell' image I also stopped at most of the public ways on the Neck to capture scenes of Marblehead Harbor with some great light and clouds. This was the view from Parker Lane which has always been a favorite but has been limited in compositions for the past few years since the stairs have [...]

Abbot Hall above Prospect Alley

I mentioned yesterday that I had driven along Beacon Street on three occasions before finding peak color at Brown's Island. Well, one of those drives took place on October 7th and included a stop along Lee Street where it meets Prospect Alley to find this composition of Abbot Hall. While the tree on the left was just past peak with signs of burnt leaves, it formed a nice frame with the brick facade of a home along Lee Street with which to capture a different view of Abbot Hall. The late morning sun helped light up all three elements in [...]

Out Past the Corinthian

On September 30th, I took a drive across the causeway and hit some favorite spots along the Neck under picture-perfect conditions. After a few shots at Chandler Hovey Park, I drove down Kimball Street and stopped where it meets Nahant for this view. If you have stopped here recently, there is a new wall in place and a very nice bench as well. I found a spot from which I could capture the edge of the Corinthian Yacht Club serving as a frame for the view of the harbor and Abbot Hall in the distance. A few trees had turned [...]

Birds Eye View

When I flew my drone on a late September morning, I did so mostly to scout out foliage spots and was a bit disappointed with the lack of vibrant color. While hovering up there, I couldn't help but capture this view of Abbot Hall after its recent restoration and with the lawn coming along nicely. As a bonus, the birds eye view allowed me to capture a good portion of historic downtown (Old Town to some), the harbor and most of the Neck. With the 11am sun coming at an angle, the scene had a nice light to it as [...]

Fall over the Harbor

This was the sunset view I was chasing with my drone while also capturing the October Sky I shared yesterday morning. It's hard to believe but this was the first time I had flown my drone in over a year (and I had only one outing in 2019 as well). I made my way from Riverhead Beach to this point staying fairly low in the sky to avoid the high wind gusts while also trying to keep all the important elements in the final composition - the boats in the harbor, the soft color reflected in clouds overhead and that [...]

Smoky Sunset

With fires raging along the west coast, it was only a matter of time before the fine particulates made their way across the country to our next of the woods. Thankfully the result was limited to cloud-like conditions during the day. I had a hunch that the haze might create perfect conditions for capturing the sun as a red ball tonight so I drove across the causeway right after dinner to chase this image. As I drove, I spotted the sun in my rear view mirror and was please to find the red ball I had hoped for. From there [...]

Basking in the Light

As it turns out, 2020 was a great year for renovations in Marblehead including those to the facade and bones of Abbot Hall. With scaffolding surrounding the building, I have not found opportunity to shoot the building except at angles low enough that I could hide the surrounding netting. Finally in August, Abbot Hall shed its scaffolding and I found the building basking in the light of a late August day when I stopped along Ocean Avenue and made my way on foot to the short stretch of beach at the end of the causeway. From this vantage point, I [...]

Afterglow of a Summer Storm

This was my last stop of the night on Wednesday August 19 after shooting at Riverhead, the Causeway, Fort Beach and Castle Rock. By the time I arrived at the Pleon Yacht Club, the sun had dipped below the horizon and I thought I had missed the best light. As I set up and composed a tighter shot, the afterglow of the summer storm seemed to breathe a second wind into the evening light and I captured this view of the harbor and Abbot hall in the distance.
