First Sail of the Season

As I mentioned in yesterday's long exposure post, I headed out on April 1st as the clouds moved in hoping for a dramatic sky and happened upon this scene.  A group of sailboats looked to be in the midst of practice drills and must have been one of the first sails of the season.  I couldn't have asked for a better backdrop than Abbot Hall and the clouds reflecting the afternoon sun.  Pretty soon we'll have this harbor filled...

From the Rooftops – The Landing

Soon, very soon!  On this rainy, gray morning, we just need to remember that soon we'll be able to enjoy this town at its finest.  Boats in the harbor, blue skies overhead, the sun at our back... This image was taken back in early September from the Harbor Wharfs Condo where I started the From the Rooftops project.  I shared an image from here looking back up State Street but this panorama gives you a better sense of what it was like on this late Fall day to stand and look out at the Landing below and the harbor beyond. Morning Comes to Little Harbor

In early December, I ventured out at sunrise to explore the light and various spots in town.  As I drove through Old Town, I found myself at the small launch near the Marblehead Lobster Company off Orne Street.  The tide was at the perfect point to make for these tiny waves along the launch area and the water was calm enough to reflect the morning light.  Not a bad way to start the day...

Sun Rays over Marblehead Harbor

Earlier this month, the Snow Moon mades its appearance over Childrens Island and Fort Sewall.  Before taking those images, I was struck by this developing sunset over the harbor.  The clouds kept opening and closing making for these rays of light that shone down.  Sometimes (well, pretty often actually), I step back from a photo and realize just how beautiful this town is.  Hopefully, I'm able to do its natural beauty some justice.

Marblehead Harbor Bathed in Purple

Winter offers amazing sunsets and I have been fortunate with the fair weather to be able to venture out and capture some of these scenes.  This image was taken at the end of December while the lighthouse was still draped in its holiday lights.  That was my primary reason for heading out to Crocker park that night.  I felt fortunate to be able to capture the incredible pink of sunset that turned the harbor into a purplish hue.  The collection of boats left in the harbor served as a perfect foreground element to provide balance to this scene.

Approaching the Landing

Our journey comes to an end with this photo.  We made our approach to The Landing and I was pleased to see that those clouds remained and continued to make the scene before me stand out as both beautiful and surreal.  There is a lot to take in here from the boat filling up with gas, the lobster men reloading their traps, the crane resting overhead and The Landing restaurant ready to serve a great meal.  I was pleased to see that the main tree had held onto its leaves just long enough for me to get this shot...

Passing Front Street and the Old North Church

Continuing on our journey back from Childrens Island, we passed these beautiful homes on Front Street.  I had never seen these from the water before and they really are amazing.  The golden steeple of the Old North Church shines in the background and the few boats left in the harbor serve to balance out the scene.  The journey continues next week but a new view From the Rooftop will be posted tomorrow.

Heading into the Harbor

As we made our way back into town on board the Hannah Glover from Childrens Island, this was one of the first scenes I captured under the developing dramatic sky.  The clouds and light were surreal and I tried to capture the feel of coming back into the harbor after a day of sailing and seeing the familiar landmark of Abbot Hall welcoming you home.  Tomorrow brings us a step closer to The Landing...stay tuned.

From the Rooftops – Lee Street and the Harbor

I started the rooftop project in late August and this was one of the first private homes that I was invited to shoot from.  The owners had responded to a flyer I addressed to them and were more than happy to share this view from their Lee street home with fellow Marbleheaders.  I have to admit being overwhelmed when I first stood on this roof and tried to take in the sites below.  The vantage point was perfect with neat houses that have stood in these spots for 200 years.  The harbor was filled with boats and you can make [...]

Rooftop Thursday – The Terraces on Lookout Court

As I began on this new project to photograph Marblehead from above, I was fortunate to run across a photo taken at The Terraces Bed and Breakfast run by Sylvia and John Philbrook from their home on Lookout Court.  We made plans to meet there when the room was free and I was thrilled to see this view as I entered.  I needed to time this right as traffic was surprisingly busy below on Lee Street with a moving truck stuck there for a while.  This was taken near the end of September so the harbor was thankfully still filled [...]
