Chasing the Light 4 – Perfect Sunset from Parker Lane

As I drove from Cove Lane to the next stop, Parker Lane, I was part giddy and part worried.  I saw the sky take on incredible hues of color and worried that I would miss the peak of this light. I got to Parker Lane, jumped out of the car and quickly set up.  I knew that I wanted to shoot this scene from the top of the stairs but there happened to be someone there at the moment so I ventured down to the waters edge. That composition wasn't working for me so I returned to the now empty [...]

Lobster Traps and the American Flag

On a late June morning and after shooting the sun rise over the harbor, I made my way to the landing to check for any good photo opportunities.  As I mad my way down the ramp to one of the floating docks, I noticed the sun was about to rise immediately behind the American flag.  I quickly set about composing this shot and liked the balance of the lobster traps in the foreground with the lighthouse and boats in the harbor serving as backdrop.  The sky still held some good color and the flag did a great job of keeping [...]

A Rainbow over Marblehead Light

On July 3rd, immediately preceding an epic sunset over the harbor (click to view), this cloud and its accompanying rain shower made a brief appearance over Marblehead Neck.  I had just gotten to Crocker Park when I saw this rainbow form.  I had just enough time to grab the camera, throw on a polarizer (to bring out the light in the rainbow and more clearly show its colors) and grab this image.  Less than a second later, the colors began to fade and the rainbow was gone.

Summer Sunset from Parker Lane

For anyone who was on my Facebook page at 8:30pm last night, here is the result of the sneak peak I posted there.  I noticed some great clouds near 8pm and decided to drive up to the Neck and try for some shots at Castle Rock.  Unfortunately, I just missed the best light there and was a bit upset at the wasted trip.  As I drove up to Chandler Hovey, though, I saw a great sunset taking shape.  I started shooting at Cove lane as the sun dipped beneath the clouds and then drove on to Parker Lane for this [...]

Fireworks from Crocker Park

Another Fourth of July has come and gone and, with it, another incredible fireworks display over the harbor.  I struggled in choosing a spot for this year's show.  I had previously shot twice from Chandler Hovey park and once from Fort Sewall.  After scouting areas early this week, I decided on Crocker Park.  As I did in the past two years, I sought a vantage point from which I could include the crowd.  I found that seeing people in the image helped pull me in and make me feel like I was there (well, you know what I mean). I [...]

Epic Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

I made my way to Crocker Park last night in hopes of shooting the almost full moon.  I was hoping for an image of it rising over the Festival of Arts stage but it rose too early.  I then watched as this beautiful bank of clouds approached and crossed over the harbor.  Fifteen minutes earlier, I was treated to a rare rainbow over the lighthouse in the distance. I left the circular polarizer on and captured the incredible golden light reflecting off the clouds onto the filled harbor below.  You can just make out the full moon on the far [...]

The Light Show over Marblehead Harbor

I posted a single strike yesterday after the storm powered through and before running out to chase rainbows.  I later reviewed my shots and found a few more bolts.  I decided to stack the shots together and highlight the impressive light show that mother nature put on.  Fitting as an even bigger show will be erupting over the harbor in just over a week.

Sunrise on the Summer Solstice

I'm not sure what it is about the summer solstice but, for whatever reason, I woke up at 4am - exactly as I did last year at this time (click for last year's photo).  I decided to revisit Hammond Park at dawn and got there to witness some soft pink light fading as the sun got ready to rise.  There were clouds at the horizon so I had little hope for a solid image until I saw the first signs of a red sun rising.  I composed the image and kept chasing the rising sun.  The images were fine but [...]

From the Air – Little Harbor

If you saw my post last Tuesday, you'll know the back story to how this photo came to be.  If not, I highly recommend reading that first and then coming back to this image. As we flew over Marblehead harbor, I quickly took some photos looking down over Little Harbor.  It really is amazing to see this area from this angle and I definitely did not appreciate it at the time.  As your eye works its way around, you notice Gerry Island, Fort Sewall, Front Street beach and the houses (especially those on Doak's Lane). Hope you enjoy this aerial [...]
