A Halloween Regatta on the steps of Abbot Hall

Bit of a late entry today as I could not make up my mind which of three shots to post. I asked fans on my Facebook page to weigh in and this was the unanimous winner. On October 29, the Eastern Yacht Club sponsored an in-harbor regatta. Given the location and the promise of colorful sails, I knew that I couldn't miss this opportunity and headed down to the Neck long lens in hand. Out for a swim in a foggy harbor

Another image from that thick foggy Summer day back in 2008. It's amazing what you can find when leafing through old photos. I had remembered the causeway shot as a favorite but then explored others I had taken that day as I walked around our new hometown (we had moved here about 6 weeks earlier). The House on Beacon Street

Walking across from Brown's Island to the mainland in late August, I turned and noticed this great scene before me. A single boat in Little Harbor with a beautiful house lying beyond and the perfect clouds above. I keep saying it but we really do live in an incredibly picturesque town!

The International Free Sail Pond Regatta hits Redds Pond

Yesterday was the first day of the US-UK International Free Sail pond yacht regatta. It was a beautiful windy and warm October day to watch these boats sail along Redds pond. You couldn't ask for a more picturesque scene! The sailing continues today so make sure you head down there to watch this competition.

A Tug Named Erica

After shooting the sunset over Gerry Island, I made my way by the dry-dock area off Doaks Lane. I saw this great red tug boat standing there and knew I had to shoot her. I could make out the name Erica N on the side but could not find any information about the boat. If anyone knows her history, please let me know in the comments section below.

Sunset over Gerry Island

The theme this week has been sunrises and sunsets and I therefore chose this photo which fit in nicely. It's another from the archive and was taken on July 4th while awaiting the fireworks display. A storm came through right before the fireworks were due to start and missed us but provided for a very intense sunset. The best view ended up being this one looking out from Fort Sewall at Gerry Island. This was taken as a 4 shot panorama. Looking Back at our Town

After walking up the hill and reaching the top of the rocky section on Crowninshield Island, my daughter and I descended and reached an area with a small tide pool. Looking up, I saw this incredible view of town looking back through Little Harbor at some colorful houses and Abbot Hall in the distance. As it was low tide, the path to Gerry Island had appeared and, if you look closely, you'll see two people walking along. They add a nice sense of perspective to the scene.

The Corinthian and the Harbor

At the corner of Kimball and Nahant Streets lies a small parking spot and an overlook. The tide was going out and I was struck by the great lines of the Corinthian Yacht Club juxtaposed against the harbor, a great cloud and Abbot Hall in the background. Then I noticed the seagull perched on the roof and knew I had to capture this image.

What Lies Beneath

After exploring the Cove and photographing the boats tied to the shore, I waded a bit deeper and discovered a bed of seaweed at my feet. I carefully composed this shot to show the seaweed and rocks underneath the water and the pier overlooking the harbor with Abbot Hall seen in the distance. I used a circular polarizer to cut through the reflections in the water and show 'what lies beneath'.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

Sunset from Fountain Park

The Sturgeon Moon rises in August and I hoped to catch it on this night from a vantage point at Fountain Park. As I waited, I tried to find a composition that would include the lighthouse and Little Harbor. I was pleased to find this angle and even more so when a pair of kayakers paddled into the foreground. The moon ended up rising a bit early so that it's color lacked the vibrant yellow that came with the moonrise the next night. I was happy with the way this sunset view turned out.
