Storm’s A Coming

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out to Crocker Park on that Wednesday at dawn hoping for a bit of red sky that might precede the coming storm. In the wide view I shared, the hints of red could only be seen close to the horizon. I took advantage of my zoom lens to compose a tighter shot that encompassed the patch of red sky and ignoring the blue surrounding it. At its peak (15 minutes before the wider shot), there was a bit of that fiery glow to alert sailors that a storm's a coming to [...]

Big Sky over Marblehead Harbor

While I wait for this warm air to break and usher in some interesting clouds and nice sunsets, I figured it was worth looking back to June 15th and a super-wide panorama used to take in the big sky over Marblehead harbor.  I had shared lots of images from this evening at Crocker Park last week and mentioned that I had swapped lenses as the light changed. I also shared one panorama of the harbor at 24mm focal length which is on the wide side of normal. Ten minutes after that golden light panorama and before the purple harbor image, [...]

The Chestnut Tree at Crocker Park

I first saw the chestnut tree at Crocker Park in full bloom in 2016 and have tried to revisit each May to photograph the flowers on the tree as they serve to perfectly frame the view of Abbot Hall from this spot. On May 22nd, I visited Crocker Park hoping for a great sunset but the clouds didn't quite break as I expected and I was left looking for alternative shots. As luck would have it, the chestnut tree was in bloom and took up much of the frame in this composition to offset the muted sunset. I have a [...]

Sunset Benches at Crocker Park – Also, VOTE TODAY

When I chose Crocker Park for my spot to capture the great light formed by storms to the north and south of us, I kept in mind that the actual sunset to the west might put on a nice show as well. As such, I kept running back up from near the float to check on the cloud cover towards Abbot Hall.  While that area never 'popped', I spotted this arc of light behind the weathered benches at Crocker Park. I had never found a good composition for these benches before but here they seem to shine with the backlighting [...]

Chasing the Light Once Again

For a variety of reasons, I had not been out shooting in well over a month's time. As luck would have it, tonight ended up being an incredible opportunity to break that streak. After returning home from work, my wife and son came up with the idea of going to the Dolphin Yacht Club for dinner. We lucked out with an outdoor table and enjoyed Chef Jake's incredible meal while watching storm clouds form to the north and south as storms split around Marblehead. As I ate and watched the sky, I kept glancing at my watch and wondered if [...]

Spring in the Park

Two weeks ago on Wednesday, April 14th, I had visited Crocker Park with the hope of shooting a nice sunrise. I lucked out with the shot I shared this past Monday of the sun coming up behind Marblehead Light but when I turned my head, I spotted this incredible sky behind me and ran to capture images of it as well. I shared my first image from that morning as soon as I returned home but had a chance to visit the other shots from that morning and worked on this one last night. In the first shot, I had [...]

Spring Sunrise at Crocker Park

A brand new photo from this morning's really fun outing! I wasn't sure how the morning would pan out when I set the alarm for 5:30 but had three locations in mind for shooting the sunrise. As I got in the car only 10 minutes before sunrise, I was disappointed not to see any color in the sky and quickly decided on Crocker Park as the best vantage point as the high clouds seemed to be moving west.I parked at the State Street landing and headed up to find a nearly empty park and a bit of color behind Marblehead [...]

Harvest Moonrise from Crocker Park

On Wednesday, September 30th, the day before it would be a truly full moon, I headed to Crocker Park hoping to capture the Harvest Moon. I had checked the location of the moonrise and found that the timing and weather conditions were far better for the day before it became officially full. With that in mind, I also thought I would revisit an old favorite composition I captured from this spot almost ten years prior. I arrived at Crocker Park and found several families there as well as a few dogs on leashes. As the sun set, I captured a [...]

A Study at Crocker Park

Next week will mark 10 years of Wednesdays in Marblehead with a video of my favorite images captured in the last decade to be shared on Wednesday, August 12.  As a prelude to that, this study at Crocker Park seemed the perfect opportunity to show how I can continue to shoot the same (or similar) scenes year after year and yet come away with enough differences to make each image unique. Today's shots were taken on July 1, 2015 - the first at 5:40pm and the second at 8:17pm. The location is almost identical, the [...]

Pink Light over Abbot

This is one of my favorite spots and a composition I have shot in various conditions with different results each time. This particular shot was captured on May 23, 2018 with a sunset that offered just enough of a pink glow overhead to add interest to the otherwise flat evening light.
