Hawthorn Pond

Last week I shared an image of Black Joe's Pond captured in 2019 and, in one of the comments, I was asked if I had photographed Hawthorn Pond. Up until then I hadn't even been to Hawthorn Pond and so on Saturday, October 17, I made it a point to head over there (after the stop at Brown's Island). I parked at the end of Hawthorn Road and then walked the trail which led me to this spot (also accessible via the Rail trail). I immediately spotted a duck floating in front of the pond grass and spent a few [...]

Abbot Hall above Prospect Alley

I mentioned yesterday that I had driven along Beacon Street on three occasions before finding peak color at Brown's Island. Well, one of those drives took place on October 7th and included a stop along Lee Street where it meets Prospect Alley to find this composition of Abbot Hall. While the tree on the left was just past peak with signs of burnt leaves, it formed a nice frame with the brick facade of a home along Lee Street with which to capture a different view of Abbot Hall. The late morning sun helped light up all three elements in [...]

Brown’s Island Foliage

By the time I finally got this shot on Saturday, October 17th, I had driving along Beacon Street on three other occasions to scout out the current state of foliage on Brown's Island. Each time, the color showed hints of progression but it wasn't until after the rain storm passed that I finally got the peak foliage color I was looking for. As luck would have it, the departing storm had broken up leaving a scattering of clouds in the blue sky overhead. The use of a polarizing filter helped accentuate the clouds as well as the color of the [...]

Playing in the Grass at Goldthwait

Shortly after my stop at Gatchell Park, I drove down to Goldthwait Reservation. I had checked the tides before leaving the house and knew the area would be filled with high tide water. I figured between the high water and the clouds overhead, I might have a nice grand view of the area from the rocks above at Devereux Beach. I parked in the lot and then headed up the walkway and tried a few shots taking in the full view of Goldthwait but none of them really 'worked'. I then had a thought and made my way carefully down [...]

Clem Rodgers Field and a Murder Mystery in Marblehead

Who knew that an innocent foliage shot could turn into a long read of a Marblehead murder mystery? On Saturday, I was driving around Marblehead trying to capture images of foliage before 2 inches of rain fell and washed all the color away. I had started at Forest River park and then found myself at the light in front of Gatchell Park and figured I would turn into the lot to explore. I photographed one tree with tackle dummies underneath and then found this scene of a small baseball diamond backed by foliage under a perfect sky. I decided to [...]

Forest River Foliage

I had just about given up on finding decent foliage shots in Marblehead this fall season and had felt reasonably happy with the recent shot at Redd's Pond and the other of Brown's Island. However, Saturday was just a beautiful day and, with the threat of rain Sunday, I decided to head out of the house a little before noon when I spotted clouds moving in. My first stop was the small bridge at the end of Leggs Hill Road which offers a postcard view of Forest River. I had been scouting the foliage at this spot every morning as [...]

Fall Color on Brown’s Island

After capturing yesterday's image of the last regatta of the year at Redd's Pond, I drove down Norman Street. I had spotted some nice fall color on Brown's island a few days prior and, with the recent storm, wondered if any foliage remained. Sure enough, some bright orange leaves could be seen adding a touch of color to the large island in Little Harbor. This is likely my last chance to shoot any foliage in town as the trees have not fared well this year with the severe fall storms.

Fall Regatta at Redd’s Pond

On Sunday, I was working on my first Wednesdays in Marblehead talk set to take place at one of our yacht clubs this Wednesday. As I took a break from the slideshow, I turned to Facebook and realized that I had almost missed the fall regatta of model sailboats at Redd's Pond.  Thanks to Kristen's Facebook photos, I quickly jumped in the car and made it to Redd's in time to capture the last few minutes of racing. The first thing I noticed was the foliage at Old Burial Hill and walked around the pond to find the composition which would [...]

October Sail into Marblehead Harbor

While I was out shooting from the Neck on Sunday, I kept hoping for something dynamic to break up the otherwise still scene of boats on their moorings. As luck would have it, only 10 minutes after capturing Tuesday's image, this boat came back into Marblehead Harbor after finishing an October sail. I imagine conditions were near perfect with cool, crisp air and a brisk wind. I was thrilled with the sailboat adding that dynamic element and even more so by the clouds shifting and exhibition their own flow in the sky above.

First Signs of Fall in Marblehead

Before capturing the moonrise on Sunday night, I had driven across the causeway to capture some interesting clouds over Abbot Hall. I decided to shoot from the float at the end of the Pleon Yacht Club pier and was thrilled to find the first signs of fall in the changing leaves across the harbor.  I composed this image to capture the boat in the foreground reflecting the afternoon sun and with the cloud formation over Abbot Hall on the left with the orange and yellow tree foliage at the edge of Crocker Park on the right. I ended up with [...]
