A Foggy Night in Marblehead – State Street

On Friday, December 5th, Marblehead was enveloped by an incredibly thick layer of fog shortly after sunset.  I headed out at 7pm and spent the next two hours capturing scenes of a foggy night in Marblehead.  While most of the resulting images were converted to black and white, I kept a few in color.  This one of State Street is the first I'll be sharing. You might recognize this composition as it is very similar to 'A Shining Star Over State Street' taken after a snow storm.   This was one of the last images I captured in the fog [...]

Marblehead Lighthouse Glowing in the Fog

I mentioned in yesterday's post that thick fog had settled on this Friday night in early December.  One of my first stops was Chandler Hovey Park where I was hoping to capture Marblehead Lighthouse glowing in the fog. I knew that the holiday lights had been set up and were lit but I was really hoping that the bright green beacon atop the light might offer something special with the fog.  One of the greatest qualities of thick fog is that it helps clarify light and, in this case, was able to show the gaps in light where the framing [...]

Foggy Morning in Marblehead Harbor

Earlier in the week, I became a bit overwhelmed by the number of images I had waiting to post and turned to Facebook to see what everyone was most interested in seeing.  The answers included the expected foliage shots but also a strong vote for more images taken in the fog. This image comes from the morning of September 11th when an incredibly dense fog rolled in and enveloped Marblehead Harbor.  I began shooting from near the State Street Landing but moved toward Fort Beach as the sun rose in the morning sky.  This was one of the last images [...]

Foliage in the Fog at Waterside Cemetery

Last night I had a bit of writer's block (or whatever the equivalent is called).  I sat in front of my computer scrolling through the 383 images of Marblehead that are in my 'to be posted' folder and just could not decide on a theme, let alone an image.  I put the question up on my FB page and the first five responses were for: sun, fog, foliage, ocean, architectural detail.  Given the time of year, I opted to go with foliage and found this image with some fog and (it's a stretch) architectural detail in the form of the [...]

Seagull at Dawn in Marblehead Harbor

I spent all of last week sharing images of a great dawn over Marblehead Harbor during which the fog gradually thickened as the sun rose.  Once the sun rose high enough in the sky, I sought out compositions to take advantage of the great diffused red light that bathed the harbor and boats.  This was one such scene. I was reasonable happy with the composition at first but felt it was missing something.  Then, as if drawn by an artist's eye, this lone seagull swooped in to just about the perfect spot in the frame.  For such an ugly bird, [...]

Foggy Morning in Marblehead Day 5 – Fort Beach and Fort Sewall

An hour and a half after starting this photo shoot on a foggy morning, I finally tore myself away from Marblehead Harbor and drove off in search of other vantage points.  I made my way down Front Street and ended up at Fort Beach facing the head of the harbor and Fort Sewall.  The sky had taken on an orange hue at this point and the fog remained thick.  I composed this scene to include the tide pools seen at low tide along Fort Beach while also including the great tree at Fort Sewall and the boats moored in the [...]

Foggy Morning in Marblehead Day 4 – Feeling Lucky

Day 4 of this week's posts all coming from the same foggy morning in Marblehead.  I mentioned before that these images were taken on September 11th which ended up being a 90 degree day and I headed out that morning at dawn hoping for a good sunrise.  As you saw in the posts earlier this week, both dawn and the sunrise were worth the few hours lost sleep. As the sun rose, the fog actually increased (rather than burning off as I expected).  At this point, I began to look for compositions with boats against the rising fog.  There is [...]

Foggy Morning in Marblehead Day 3 – Red Sun Rising

For those who might have missed the start of this week's posts, I mentioned going out on the morning of Wednesday, September 11th on what ended up being a 90 degree day.  This was in large part thanks to the personalized forecast I received from Matt Noyes over Twitter the night before.  On Monday, I shared a shot from dawn and Tuesday featured some early Fall colors at Crocker Park. I returned to the spot of my earlier dawn shots in anticipation of the sunrise and found that the fog had significantly increased.  I still had my medium telephoto lens [...]

Foggy Morning in Marblehead Day 2 – First Colors at Crocker Park

Continuing on from yesterday's post, here is another image taken on the (soon to be) foggy morning of a hot September 11.  I had photographed Marblehead harbor filled with boats and the lighthouse for a while and kept looking in the other direction to see how the light was faring over there.  When the light picked up, it seemed to set off the small clump of foliage in the rocky cliff of Crocker Park that had started to change color.  I set up on the float for this composition including the nearby rowboat on a private float and the Crocker [...]
