Keep it Local – Coffey Ice Cream

It's seven o'clock at night on an early September day. We just got through three straight days of rain and the sun shone for a wonderful few hours. Had a great home cooked meal and decided we needed one last ice cream run. While my wife bathed the kids, I drove out to Coffey Ice Cream and was thrilled to see they were still open. Lunch at the Yacht Club

As I biked around the neck in July, I happened to turn down the street where this yacht club resides and noticed its outdoor seating area for the first time. I asked permission to photograph it and was thrilled to be given the opportunity to shoot this breath-taking scene. This was taken at 9:30am so it wasn't quite time for lunch but the sun was at my back and perfectly illuminated Marblehead harbor filled with boats on their moorings. Keep it Local – Atomic Cafe

Another Friday means another local business is featured on the site. Today we see Atomic Cafe that can be found in a great brick and glass setting on School street next door to the Little Theater. I stopped here one day while walking around Five Corners and noticed that the normally crowded streets were nearly empty of cars. The Brick Oil House at Chandler Hovey Park

Yesterday's Reflection shot was taken while my older camera was shooting a time lapse movie of the sun setting over the harbor. While waiting for it to finish, I wandered around Chandler Hovey park looking for compositions and angles that I hadn't yet shot. I noticed the sun setting over the brick oil house that used to power Marblehead Light and decided to close down the aperture and turn the bright sun into a sunstar. Having the tree there helped add to the composition as did the full harbor.

Reflections on a Year

Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of this website. What started as a desire to learn more about my new hometown by shooting photos every Wednesday, has turned into an incredible experience. In this past year, I have published 94 posts of images of this town. Over 200 people have 'liked' the Wednesdays in Marblehead Facebook page. Fifty people signed up to receive regular email updates. Keep it Local – Comina

Fridays are for local businesses and today features Comina at 39 Atlantic Avenue. I was walking down Atlantic Avenue in mid-June on an especially beautiful day and looked for businesses featuring interesting architecture. I first noticed some glass finiales in the window at Comina and it was only after crossing the street that I noted the great architecture of the building. After shooting the exterior, I promises the owner that I would post this to the site in the next few weeks. Two months later and I finally am clearing the backlog of photos of this picturesque town.

Two Stars from the Base of the Lighthouse

This photo was taken the same day that I captured the cliff jumpers at Crocker park. As I mentioned there, it was a hot July 4th weekend in Marblehead and I found myself with some time at sunset. Keep it Local – The Hurricane

Continuing with the Friday focus on local businesses, here is The Hurricane. I had tried to shoot the Hurricane once before but it didn't come out quite right. When I walked by on a warm Summer day and saw the doors and windows open, I knew I had my opportunity to get the image I had wanted. Those open doors seem to beckon you to come inside, have a seat, grab a beer and enjoy a Red Sox game... The Hurricane is located at 259 Washington Street at Five Corners

The Hydrangeas on Peabody Lane

I was out over the Fourth of July weekend scouting locations to shoot from and decided to stop at each of the public right-of-ways that dot the Neck. I immediately noticed the beautiful hydrangeas in full bloom at this house on Peabody lane and made a note to return. The next morning I arrived as the sun rose above the trees and produced great dappled light to highlight a few of the beautiful blue flowers.
