Floating under the Light of the Moon

Tonight's moonrise was quite a sight to behold and I was thankful for a last minute decision to capture the full corn moon rising over the float at Crocker Park.  I had originally planned to capture the moon from along Front Street but arrived to find a seemingly thick marine layer that I was sure would block the composition I had in mind. I made a quick decision to head to Crocker Park instead and arrived in plenty of time to set up.  As I got to the float, I noticed the sign listing the dates of operation as June [...]

By the Light of the Moon

Tonight the full Strawberry minimoon rose over Chandler Hovey Park and I was ready to capture the year's smallest moon from across the harbor at Fort Sewall.  I had set up with my camera on a tripod and brought along the drone wondering how a different perspective might work in shooting the moon.  When the moon rose, I learned quickly that the drone's camera was simply too small (in regards to focal length) to do this 'minimoon' justice and concentrated on getting this shot with the real camera. I decided to compose the final image to include the working boat [...]

Moonrise Symmetry

The full moon rose last night and I had convinced myself that clouds would block any view of it only to catch a glimpse of it rising on the First Harbor webcam and lamenting my decision to bag it.  Thankfully, I still have over 700 images in my 'to be posted' folder that have yet to see the light of day and discovered this image of perfect moonrise symmetry. On July 31, 2015, I had gone out on a perfect Summer evening with hardly a cloud in the sky and was fortunate to capture several images of a beautiful moonrise [...]

Between the Moon and Marblehead Light

A full moon is rising tonight on the first night of Passover and, knowing that I won't have a chance to shoot it, I thought I would share this image of the moonrise from mid-November.  I've shared two other images of this full moon before but today's image was the first one I captured that night and, while the moon hadn't quite hit its peak glow, I really liked the softer look of it as it broke through the haze on this night. One of my favorite aspects of shooting the moon from this spot near Crocker Park was being able [...]

Full Worm Moon over Flying Point

I can't describe how cold it was tonight while waiting for the full moon to rise over Flying Point.  With the clear night sky, I decided to drive over to Greystone beach having scouted out the projected rise of the full worm moon.  I had initially considered shooting the moonrise over Children's Island but decided in the end to try to capture it over the tip of Marblehead Neck instead. I set up about 10 minutes early with a borrowed 600mm lens and waited...and waited.  The cold air seemed to blow right through all layers of clothing and my hands [...]

Goodnight Moon – Marblehead, Massachusetts

The supermoon rose at its closest path to Earth in over sixty years and I had just made it to this location in time to capture the incredibly large moon against the iconic Abbot Hall.  In the past 36 hours, I have shot the moonrise twice and the moonset once.  Each location required a good deal of planning and luck - but none more so than this one. I started my supermoon chasing last night from near Crocker Park and managed to get a nice shot of it ascending near the lighthouse.  This morning, I woke before dawn and captured [...]

Supermoon Rises over Marblehead Light

When I first heard that a supermoon was due to rise in November, I dismissed it as 'yet another supermoon' (it seems we've had two to three of these each year since the last really big one in March 2011 which I used for the cover of my book).  It was only later that I realized that the moon was making its closest path to Earth since 1948 and would indeed be a supermoon to rival and beat that 2011 one. With that in mind, I made several plans for capturing the wonder of this full Beaver moon.  First up was upgrading [...]

Pink Sky and the Hint of Moonrise

October's Hunters Moon came up during a surprisingly nice sunset and, between the two phenomena, I was like a kid in a candy store from my perch at Crocker Park.  It was only fitting then that at the first hint of moonrise over Marblehead Neck, the sky turned cotton candy pink. I composed this image to include the boats in Marblehead harbor reflecting the last glow of sunlight and with Marblehead Light's green beacon signaling the sunset.

Hunter Moon over the Corinthian

Tonight's full Hunter moon was dubbed a supermoon for its proximity to Earth and larger than average appearance in the night sky.  I had plotted out its projected rise from multiple locations in town but was hoping for a new composition rather than relying on a shot of it coming up against Marblehead Light.  I had captured the moon rising over the Eastern Yacht Club once before and so I plotted the perfect spot from which to shoot theHunter moon over the Corinthian tonight. I set up at Crocker Park and shot the surprisingly nice sunset with views looking back toward the [...]

Bertha under the Harvest Moon

My son and I went out to watch the Harvest Moon rise tonight over Marblehead.  I've shot the Harvest Moon several times and always favored a composition including the lighthouse.  Today, I decided to head down Beacon Street and shoot the full moon as it rose over Gerry Island, Childrens Island and boats moored in Little Harbor. Despite some haze at the horizon, the full Harvest Moon was a brilliant sight to behold.  I composed this image to include the working boat Bertha in the frame.  I've got a panorama of the full scene below.
