Spring in Marblehead – Waterside Cemetery

I hadn't been out shooting for a couple of weeks but I have been scouting locations and finding some of my favorites, like the Harris Street cemetery, to have a lackluster showing this spring. As I drove down West Shore Drive the other day and looked to my left, I spotted a tree in full spring blossom just past the entrance to the Waterside Cemetery and decided I had to capture that scene in better light. Finally, on this Wednesday in Marblehead, the sun and clouds cooperated for this scene which may be my one and only shot of spring [...]

Morning Light

This image was captured 20 minutes after Monday's wider shot. The dawn colors had disappeared as clouds thickened but then a band of orange light formed behind Chandler Hovey Park. I had two cameras at the ready and swapped the one with a wider lens to this one with my longest zoom. I extended the zoom almost to its limit to keep focus on the park and lighthouse with the small band of great light forming a backdrop.

Cloudy and no Chance of Moonset

I had gone out on Saturday morning hoping that the clouds might stay high enough or hold off long enough for me to capture the full moon setting. I drove across the causeway and looped around Chandler Hovey Park with those hopes rapidly fading but, as I crossed back along the causeway, I saw the first hint of pink in the morning sky. I quickly changed course and headed to the State Street Landing where I rushed out and captured a few compositions as the dawn sky erupted in color. This was my favorite of the four 'keepers' from this [...]

Spring is in the Air – Old North Church

Last shot from my outing on Sunday, April 15 when lasers and tech dinghies crossed Marblehead Harbor. I was set up at Parker Lane and zoomed in a bit as the clouds shifted so that the sun reflected off the white sails of these lasers while Old North Church and the houses behind The Landing fell into shadow. Hope this week got you excited for springtime in Marblehead!

Spring is in the Air – Marblehead Light

I mentioned that I had gone out on Sunday, April 10th to capture tech dinghies in the harbor and started off at Hammond Park. This was the scene that awaited me there. I played with tight and wide compositions of this scene but had to go with the wider version as it allowed me to include the great cumulus clouds over Marblehead Light. The sun was behind me and helped bring out the small white sails against the blue water of the harbor.

Spring is in the Air – Grace, St Michaels and Crocker Park

Continuing with images from the last tech dinghy race of the season which took place on Sunday, April 10th. Here a group (gaggle?) of dinghies mixes with lasers crossing in front of St. Michaels, Grace Community Church and Crocker Park as the sun reflects off the white sails.

Spring is in the Air – Abbot Hall

I was home on Sunday, April 10th having finished some yard work when I noted some nice cumulus clouds overhead and pulled up the Boston Yacht Club webcam to see how they appeared over the harbor. I was surprised to find more than a dozen sailboats crossing the harbor and quickly made my way to Hammond Park where I captured the tech dinghies in front of Marblehead Light. Once the light shifted, I drove across the causeway and found this vantage point from Parker Lane. It definitely felt as if spring was in the air with temperatures in the mid-50s [...]

Ready for the Season

Back to the sunset on March 18th and my first stop along Foster Street. I had shot toward Abbot and the lighthouse but decided to try this composition of the two cranes at the end of the pier just as the sun dipped under a cloud. I closed the aperture as small as it would go and managed to pull out a few sun rays against the cloud while also maximizing focus throughout the frame.  The two cranes seem ready for the season and to start filling Marblehead Harbor with boats. Won't be long now before those moorings fill up...
