Last Night at Crocker

What incredible light we had last night at Crocker park ahead of that sunset rain storm that washed over Marblehead! (and a first test of my new email system) I was alerted to incoming rain at 7:30pm last night and, seeing how it was potentially timed with sunset, I figured there was a decent chance of capturing my first rainbow of the season. I decided to drive out to Crocker Park to give me options of shooting back towards the sunset light and then pivot to get a possible rainbow over the harbor. As the rain approached and the sun [...]

Grey Clouds over Marblehead

On May 15th, I had headed out a bit too early to catch the moonrise and so I made a quick detour onto the Neck. The light held some promise but, as I turned onto Harbor Avenue and took another look to my left, I spotted some grey clouds that threatened to blot out the sunset. I ended up at Foster Street and walked down to the Pleon pier for this view just as the sun was fully blocked by the cloud cover. I had to underexpose the scene to battle the light escaping from behind the cloud and was [...]

From Atop Fort Sewall

On May 15th, I headed out to Fort Sewall to capture the full moon rising. As I waited, I kept looking back towards Fort Beach and snuck over a little before 7 as a lackluster sunset began to take shape. This shot was taken just to the left of the plaque and without stepping on the grass being made ready for the Fort's grand reveal in a few short weeks. I hadn't shot from this spot in some time and forgot how nice this view is looking down at houses along Front Street and finding Abbot Hall in the distance. [...]

Above the Clouds at Chandler Hovey Park

This was the other image I captured from atop Fort Sewall as the full moon rose above the clouds on Sunday night. I shared the image of a lone paddle boarder which I thought offered a dynamic contrast in the relative sizes of man and moon.  I ended up favoring that image over this more classic composition but still thought this one worthy of a share. I wonder which you prefer - 'Moonrise Paddle' or 'Above the Clouds'?

Moonrise Paddle

I headed out tonight in the hopes of capturing the super flower full moon (when did moon names get so long?).  I had checked its expected location and decided to shoot from the recently renovated Fort Sewall only I did not pay attention to the time and arrive almost an hour early for the 7:40pm rise. I ended up crossing the causeway to shoot back towards Abbot Hall but the clouds filled the sky too quickly for a nice shot there. Once back at the Fort, I set up only to realize I had missed my mark and quickly moved [...]

Empty Harbor Dawn

Another image from my outing on the morning of April 16th and lucking out with some great dawn colors. I had shared a tighter shot focusing on Marblehead Light and Childrens Island but thought I would share this one today. I had zoomed out to include the stacked lobster traps as well as the American flag at the State Street Landing. The empty harbor filled with moorings seems to be awaiting the arrival of warmer days and boats to fill their spots. I imagine the next few days will see a lot of activity in Marblehead harbor as 70 degree [...]

Carnival Sunrise

After ten years of shooting the annual Marblehead Carnival at Devereux Beach, I thought I had exhausted all compositions. With that and the grey skies (though no rain!) I had about given up on any new shots of this year's carnival. However, when I drive by Devereux the other day, I noticed the ferris wheel had moved to a new spot and had an idea in mind - I just needed some sun and for the wind to die down... This morning at 6:30, conditions fell into place. I drove down to the beach and launched my drone (hadn't used [...]

Crocker in the Springtime

One final shot from my outing on Wednesday, April 27th. I had set up at the pier off Foster Street and captured closer shots of Abbot Hall with a lone sailboat moored in mid-harbor and then pivoted to capture the EYC launch boats. The last composition I wanted to capture was the wider view as the sunlight was helping to bring out the greens in Crocker Park sandwiched between Abbot and the State Street Landing. The contrast of light on Crocker and the darker clouds above with a bit of glow to the harbor water made for one last keeper [...]

Ready to Launch

It's amazing how many compositions can be captured from the end of the pier at the Pleon Yacht Club. I shared one looking across the harbor towards Abbot Hall and the BYC last week. As I turned, I spotted this view of the launch for Eastern Yacht Club. As the wind picked up, the flags flew and picked up the light of the sun breaking through the clouds. In the distance you can see Marblehead Light peeking out from behind the Corinthian. I'm sure the harbor will be seeing lots of boats entering in the next few weeks and these [...]

Spring is Here – First Boat in Midharbor

After capturing the view at Waterside Cemetery on Wednesday, I continued to drive around Marblehead and then onto the Neck to find scenes of spring.  As I turned down Foster Street, I spotted a boat perfectly positioned on its mooring in midharbor and found a nice spot along the Pleon pier where I could line it up with Abbot Hall and the BYC. From there it was just a matter of waiting for a break in the clouds and capture the feeling of a perfect spring day in Marblehead. For those who can't zoom in 200% to read the boat's [...]
