Pink Moonset

A wider shot from the full snow moon setting on February 16th than I had initially shared. It's easy to fall into the trap of zooming as far as possible but I try to make it a point to zoom out as well to take in the full scene. Here the 100mm view offered a full pink sky as well as the expanse of landmarks including Abbot Hall, Boston Yacht Club, Crocker Park, St Michael's and Grace Community Church.

Adrift

For this being my first (and likely only) outing in March, the night of March 18th proved to be quite productive with 7 keepers captured between Foster Street and Corinthian Lane. When I first arrived at Corinthian Lane, I was immediately drawn to this small boat. I titled this 'adrift' but the boat was tied up securely and not very far from the shore at low tide. I used a telephoto lens to help compress the expanse of harbor between the boat and Abbot Hall in the distance. I also chose a slightly more open aperture of f/5.6 to give [...]

A Beautiful Sunset on an Awful Day

Many of those who see these images have ties to Marblehead but no longer reside within its 4.4 square miles. As such the title of today's post may sound odd or be assumed to be about me...it's not. A tragic car accident took the life of a Marblehead High School senior on March 18th and the community has been rocked by the loss. As any father would, I felt the news as a gut punch. After a long day, I felt the need to get out and made my way across that causeway and onto the Neck having no plan [...]

Breakfast at the Driftwood

This is the second time I've shared an image of The Driftwood with the last being in my Keep it Local series. It was hard to not shoot every storefront I passed during this mid-February snow storm and the Driftwood seemed to call out for its moment with the red facade perfectly highlighting the falling snow. It would be a great weekend to stop here for some corned beef hash, pancakes, maybe fried dough...

Keep it Local – FL Woods

Even though every FL Woods label clearly states 'Established 1938' on it, I hadn't realized that it has been in this same exact location on Washington Street for all of those 84 years. Please correct me if that's wrong as their site states they have been here for 'over 75 years'... Anyway, the store is a Marblehead institution and I couldn't pass up the chance to capture the storefront with snow falling on this mid-February morning.

Dawn’s Early Glow

On February 16th, I headed out to capture the full moon setting behind Abbot Hall but stayed for the sunrise to capture the view of dawn's early glow over Abbot, the Boston Yacht Club and houses lined up around them. You can just make out a hint of purple in the thin clouds near the horizon that had enveloped the moon as it set. More interesting is that beautiful glow coming off the buildings.

Snowfall on Redd’s Pond

I was away last week and so did not share any images as I might have lost a few of you with photos of sunrises, sunsets and rainbows on a warm island beach... And that is a perfect segue to today's image of Redd's captured during the snowfall on February 13th.  I shot four very different compositions from this one spot and liked this one the best. I love that the picnic table has a nearly identical red color as that of the house named Pond View across the way and that is the only color to be seen in [...]

Topside at Maddie’s

I've been capturing images of Marblehead for over 10 years now and this is the first time I have shot Maddie's on its own rather than as part of a State Street scene. With the falling snow, I had walked the length of State Street and stopped across the street to capture this simple shot of Maddie's. I had a project years ago called 'Keep it Local' in which I shared images of storefronts around town on Fridays. This feels like a throwback to that series so make sure you keep it local and enjoy a drink at Maddie's this [...]

Coming Down Mugford

I made a point of seeking out the Bowen House in 2015 as there is a beautiful cherry blossom out front and later learned two interesting things about it. It is one of only fifteen homes in Marblehead that were built before 1700 and still stand today. Also, it has been tied to the H.P. Lovecraft story 'The Festival'. That spring morning was very far removed from the scene I saw as I was coming down Mugford Street this past weekend. Freshly fallen snow had made the roads and sidewalks a bit treacherous and I was taking turns staring at [...]

Full Snow Moon sets over Abbot Hall

What a nice start to this Wednesday in Marblehead. I had planned out the timing and location of this morning's full snow moon setting and figured that if I set up along Foster Street, I had a decent chance (weather providing) to capture a nice image of the full moon abutting Abbot Hall.  Alarm went off and I was out the door in cold weather gear (it was a brisk 11 F) and headed across the causeway with a grin across my face as I spotted the moon and few if any clouds to get in the way. Sure enough, [...]
