Taking Flight at Devereux Beach

On August 3rd, I was at Devereux Beach grabbing ice cream with my wife when a very nice sunset formed. It was low tide so I was able to get fairly far down the beach and took several images facing back toward the causeway. I then turned and noticed the first birds taking flight and headed toward me so I fired off a few shots hoping to catch them. I will often clone out a random bird or plane in an image if it doesn't offer anything to the composition. In this case, I thought the birds taking flight at [...]

That One Summer Sunset

It seems that every year, there's that one summer sunset that explodes in the sky and changes color so quickly that it ends up creating numerous composition possibilities. Such was the case on July 19th when I returned home from a boat ride around the harbor and pulled over at the Village Street dock as the light began to form. I spent this weekend catching up on images in my 'to be processed' folder and ended up finding five images from this night in addition to the one I already shared. This one was actually a panorama of two images [...]

Corker of a Sunrise

I can't recall what led me to wake up at 5am on April 14th but, as soon as I was up, I headed straight for Crocker Park and was rewarded with a corker of a sunrise. This is my third (and final) image from this morning where the sky shifted through red, pink and purple and the calm water reflected the light in the sky. I played with the composition of Marblehead Light, Childrens Island and the lone sailboat with wider and tighter shots but this was a really nice in-between that stayed in the 'to be published' folder until [...]

Sunset Gull

After nine years of capturing images of Marblehead, this might be a first. If you look closely at the sky, you'll see a sea gull lit up in fiery red light as the last of the sun's rays reflect off its feathers. The sunset gull added an interesting highlight to an otherwise pleasant sunset reflecting in the water of Marblehead Harbor. The one truly depressing aspect of this image captured on October 5, 2018...sunset took place at 6:06pm!  Enjoy the long warm days while you can.

Summer Days in Little Harbor

Yesterday's incredibly warm weather put me in mind of time spent last July 4th running around Marblehead capturing images of from the ground and air of the various 'watering holes' around town. I hit Little Harbor at what seemed like peak tie up with boats filling the harbor and plenty of folks in the waist-high water taking advantage of warm Summer days in Little Harbor.

Fort Beach Sunset

I'm not sure if this summer has had fewer amazing sunsets or if I've missed them with travels and other plans but I was amazed to find one incredible sunset after another in my 'to be posted' archive when I scrolled to last summer. This is a shot from July 3, 2018 and one of the most incredible displays of light I have encountered since moving to Marblehead. The light changed so fast and cycled through so many colors and cloud formations that each shot of the Fort Beach sunset was different and, at least in my mind, worth sharing. [...]

Painted with Clouds

While looking for an image to share this morning, I had the evening news on and kept hearing talk of rain in the forecast. That may be why my eye was drawn to this image of clouds over the harbor on a mid-May evening. The sky appears to have been painted with clouds as the textures don't seem natural on close inspection. In other news, I spent this weekend working on my Marblehead 2020 calendar. I decided to include three images of the Fort Sewall tree in addition to some favorite images to represent each month captured over the past [...]

Marking the Harbor

I've shared a few images from a short boat trip circumnavigating Marblehead Harbor that took place in mid-July and hope you aren't tiring of the views of Marblehead 'from the water'. When I spotted the red channel marker labeled 2MH, I very quickly composed this image capturing it and the green MH1 marker with Marblehead Light in the background. I lucked out with the cloud cover overhead and the haze which helped convey the warmth of this summer evening spent with friends motoring around our harbor.

Naugus Head from the Water

Thought I would change it up just a bit from the recent sunset shots at Devereux and return to the boat trip around Marblehead that we took  on July 19th. We had set out from Salem Harbor aboard a friend's boat and I had my camera out ready to shoot. We very quickly passed Naugus Head and I noted the houses surrounded by green foliage and nice cloud cover overhead. I rarely get to capture this viewpoint from the water of Salem harbor and thought others might enjoy the view as well.
