Marblehead Rays

September 4th was quite the photo outing with this first stop along Corinthian Lane paving the way for a later outing at Crocker Park that would yield some instant favorite images. When I first went out at 5pm, it was to catch a break in rain showers and some interesting clouds that I had spotted overhead. I drove across the causeway and then glanced left as I drove along the Neck finally deciding to pull over along Corinthian Lane. I arrived just as another storm was approaching and, with the broken cloud cover, the sunlight was broken up into sun [...]

After the Rain – Crocker Park

So before the orange sky and before the rainbow I shared yesterday, I was huddled under the covered benches at Crocker Park waiting for some brief showers to pass. I was focused on the view of Abbot Hall the whole time and watched as the clouds shifted and then began to reflect the light of sunset. After the rain stopped, I stepped out and captured this image I had been composing in my head while the rain had fallen. I liked that the wet path shone brightly and reflected some of the light in the sky. I used the granite [...]

Sunset Rainbow over Marblehead Harbor

On any other night, being able to capture a sunset rainbow would have made me giddy and want to rush home to share the image on my site. On this particular night, the sky would end up exploding in color only ten minutes later and this otherwise beautiful view of a rainbow and pink cloud over a full Marblehead Harbor become relegated to the 'to be published' folder. I plan to spend this Wednesday in Marblehead working on the rest of the images from this evening one week ago as well as dropping off my first shipment of calendars at [...]

Sunlight on a Full Marblehead Harbor

When I captured this image, I hadn't been out in nearly a month. It seemed like I was making up for lost time when I went out twice on Sunday, Sept 1st - this time to capture golden sunlight reflecting off boats filling Marblehead harbor. The clouds that held such promise earlier in the day had all but disappeared at this point so my hopes for a strong sunset were dashed (little did I know I would witness an incredible sunset only a few days later). Still, it was nice to be out with a camera at the dock in [...]

First Harbor Sunrise

I woke up in time for the sunrise on Saturday, September 6th and made the most of it by driving down to Little Harbor. I lucked out with the pink sky reflecting off the calm water and creating a beautiful First Harbor sunrise. Even better, one of the lobster boats had its lights on as the crew got ready for a day out at sea. You can also spot two kayakers out in the water enjoying a morning row.

Marblehead Yacht Club

After nine years of capturing images of Marblehead, I had yet to find a good angle for a shot of the Marblehead Yacht Club. When I finished taking shots of the harbor on Sunday night, I turned to find this scene before me. I'm not sure if it was the low tide, the flag flying in the breeze or the light behind the club, but the combination of those and the launch boat made me grab for the camera and capture this shot. You can make out some patrons enjoying dinner on this unofficial last weekend of summer.

Orange Sky over Marblehead Harbor

Remember how I was complaining last week about the lack of nice sunsets this summer? Forget I said that...[also, read to the end for a calendar announcement!] I had a feeling about tonight's sunset and, more specifically the chance of a rainbow forming after a late storm showed up on radar and promised to pass right around sunset with clear skies behind it. I watched the radar and headed out only to return home and do that all over again when the storm stalled for a bit.  I was torn between shooting the oncoming storm from the Neck or its [...]

Rocky Shores of Chandler Hovey Park

Sunday, September 1st was the first time I had been out to capture new photos in nearly a month and, with the nice cloud cover, I decided to bring along my drone. I had flown the drone only once in the past year having spent much of 2017 and 2018 exploring Marblehead from the air. I had realized that the drone offered other possibilities than simply shooting from 100-400 feet in the air and had an idea in mind when I drove out to the Neck. I arrived to find the parking lot at Chandler Hovey packed on this Labor [...]

Moon over Crocker

Last night, a deluge of rain poured down on Marblehead beginning at around 6pm. I was watching the radar as it looked like the rain might clear right at sunset and provide perfect conditions for a rainbow. Sure enough, the rain tapered down just before 7 (sunset is at 7:20pm right now) and I drove off to a spot along the harbor. I ended up at the end of Ferry Lane and sat in my car as the last drops fell and saw the sky brighten up only to then hear the sunset cannons fire telling me that the clearing [...]

The Corinthian and Marblehead Light

I mentioned in Monday's post of the sunset off the Village Street dock that we had just returned from a boat ride around Marblehead Harbor. This image of the Corinthian Yacht Club and Marblehead Light was captured towards the end of that circumnavigation. I hadn't approached the CYC from this angle before and marveled at the proximity of the lighthouse on Chandler Hovey Park to the facade of the yacht club. As luck would have it, two of the club's launches were parked with one showing the CYC name on its rear. It was a Friday night in mid-July so [...]
